Chapter 148: Asena: Version 2.0 (Now With Glasses)
After grabbing a few fruits from the platter, some grapes, a couple of strawberries and a banana, Micah slipped out of the dining room as quickly as he could. He released a small breath of relief as he walked toward his room. He finally had escaped another round of questions, questions he didn’t even have answers to.
He hadn’t even asked Clyde’s surname, where his company was, or what it was called. And why he kept showing up around him.
Micah chewed his bottom lip, slowing his pace as he reached the stairs. He stared at the steps for a moment before heading up toward his room. He didn’t want to ask. Deep down, he was afraid of the answer. If he asked, if he opened that door and learned about the man, he felt like he would be swept into something confusing and impossible to step away.
Clyde had already messed with his mind enough. He had taken over Micah’s thoughts when it came to designing. It was frustrating how his face, demeanour and body showed up in the background every time Micah picked up a pencil or sat down to sketch an idea. That was more than enough. He didn’t need to get tangled up in anything else, not names, not jobs, not feelings.
When he reached his room, he closed the door behind him and locked it. Then he set the fruit aside on the desk and dropped to his knees in front of his backpacks. He unzipped it and started going through everything again. The wig, makeup, clothes, shoes, all the tools he needed to become Asena. Tonight was important. He had a meeting with Aidan Wilson.
He grabbed his backpack and tiptoed to the entrance. He peeked left and right from behind a pillar, making sure nobody was in sight. Then he went straight to the garage. If they caught him, Micah feared there would be another series of questioning.
He put his backpack in a low-key car and drove off, sneaking away from Ramsy’s estate.
He went straight to one of the apartments under his name. He wanted to hide from Ramsy’s family this weekend. And his last experience in the hotel was not that satisfactory. With the campus forum saying he had a hot boyfriend, he didn’t care anymore if someone spotted a girl leave his home. It was even better if they saw Asena. That way that ridiculous rumour would not spread more than it was.
He arrived at an apartment with tight security. He put his key in the elevator to activate it and went straight to the apartment on the 10th floor.
The inside was clean and furnished. Micah tossed the backpack and went straight to bed. His mind was still groggy from lack of sleep. He had plenty of time to get ready.
Several hours later:
Micah took a shower and sat down behind the mirror. He began the process of changing to a girl with practised efficiency. First came the make-up, base, powder, and blush. Then the breast pads, then the outfit. He paused the moment when he saw the white wig lying on the bed. His mouth twisted in regret.
"Damn it," he muttered under his breath. Why had he only bought the white one?
He picked it up and gave a little shake.
There was no need to use white hair and be like the exact same Asena who Big sister remembered from cosplay.
He hadn’t planned on doing this disguise thing more than once or twice, so he didn’t bother collecting different wigs. And now it was biting him in the ass. The cosplay style Asena wasn’t exactly subtle. And in his original plan, there was no need to meet Aidan face to face.
But he didn’t have time to buy another wig now. The meeting was tonight.
He sighed and decided that at the very least, he could change his demeanour, and go for a shy girl look, with glasses and casual clothes.
He adjusted his make-up slightly, adding freckles under his eyes and choosing a slightly darker foundation. Not enough to make him unrecognisable but just enough to shift things. With large black-rimmed glasses on, most of his face was covered. The white wig fell in layers that framed his cheeks and neck. He made sure the bangs covered his forehead too.
He chose a loose denim skirt and a baggy T-shirt that hung past his hips, then tossed on an oversized coat to make his frame look smaller.
Wearing flat shoes, he grabbed his small bag and left the apartment. From his super fabulous luck, he didn’t encounter anyone, not even meowing cats, barking dogs or chirping birds!
Micah sighed. When he wanted to avoid people, the whole city would pop up. If he needed someone to see him, no one was around.
He hailed a taxi and went straight to the address Aidan had sent. His fingers fidgeted with the strap of his bag the whole ride. He didn’t let himself recall the novel. He was just going to meet an arrogant man, not a kidnapper rapist male lead.
They arrived at the Gooden Swan Hotel in less than half an hour. The building was as fancy as ever, but tonight, the atmosphere was surprisingly laid back. People in jeans and simple dresses filled the lobby.
In the lobby, Micah walked up to the front desk as Aidan instructed. He adjusted his glasses and softened his voice.
"Excuse me, how can I get to the charity gala?"
"Hello miss. May I see your invitation, please?" the hotel receptionist asked with a smile.
"Certainly," Micah said in his gentle girly tone and held up the QR code on his phone.
The receptionist scanned it quickly and handed over a sleek key card. "Please use this card for access to the 12th floor. Take the elevator over there."
Micah nodded and walked calmly to the special elevator. He used the card and the elevator moved to the 12th floor.
When the door opened, Micah stepped outside. The room was filled with soft lighting and people chatting over drinks and light food.
Everyone was dressed casually, just like the event had promised. The gala’s theme supported small businesses and independent clothing designers, supposedly a big heartfelt cause.
But Micah knew better. This wasn’t really about charity. The main players here were the rich and powerful, showing off rare items for auction to make themselves look generous. It was just another chance to brag under the guise of kindness.
But because the founder was a humble dressmaker, they had continued the tradition.
Anyway, Micah easily blended into a sea of people in ordinary clothes.
He searched for someone like the novel had described about Aidan. A dominant figure, someone whose presence turned heads. Supposedly so handsome that people forgot how to speak when they saw him.
Micah scoffed inwardly. Yeah right, every male lead in the novel was handsome and unique.
Leo had an out-of-earthy beauty. Archie had an exceptional physique like he was carved out of marble. And Silas, well, he didn’t like that man at all.
"How am I supposed to know which one’s Aidan?" he mumbled under his breath.
They hadn’t even decided how to recognise each other. And mostly it was because the man had not replied.
Then he heard a voice so familiar that every hair on his body stood up.
No way! Why was he here?
Micah turned his head and saw the guy he had chatted with last night, the deformed car roof guy, Alex Ford, stood arrogantly with two other men. Even with casual clothes, he looked effortlessly cool.
Micah remembered him vividly from the Royal Hotel incident. And now, there he was, just a few feet away.
At least he was in different attire! He wasn’t anything like the rockstar-type girl from last time. But his damn white hair...
He took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. Yes. He wouldn’t remember him.
Micah’s stare made the man sense the gaze and turn toward him. When their eyes met, the man paused. A frown filled his face. Then he strolled toward Micah.
No way, no way! Micah screamed in his head.
He spun on his heel and walked away fast, slipping through the crowd as quickly as he could.
What was with his luck?! Where the hell was Aidan?! Why was he encountering this man instead?
