Chapter 147: Campus Flower in Crisis

The next morning Micah woke up late. He blinked up at the ceiling, dazed. The sun had already climbed too high, filling his room with bright light. He groaned, rubbing his face with both hands. No wonder he felt groggy. He had stayed up way too late the night before chatting with the deformed car roof guy, Alex Ford. It wasn’t anything deep. Just aimless texting. Nothing personal, nothing revealing. However, it made him forget about his troubles. Somehow hours passed and Micah didn’t even realise.

Micah rolled out of bed with a sigh and walked downstairs in his slippers, rubbing his eyes.

The hum of chatters spread through the house.

Micah yawned and stepped into the dining room. "Morning," he said, pulling out a chair and sitting down.

"It’s more noon than morning, sweetie," Elina said, looking at her son with a smile.

"Umm..." Micah hummed, reaching for the milk jug and pouring himself a glass.

His mother watched him closely. Her smile faded a little. "Have you... lost weight?"

Jacob, who was mid-conversation on the phone, paused and turned his head toward Micah.

Even Willow, typing furiously on her laptop, slowed to a stop and looked up.

Micah ignored their stares and added a spoonful of honey to his warm milk. He gave it a slow stir, then took a small sip. "After ten days of military training, how could anyone get fatter?" he said dryly.

He knew his stomach problems had taken a toll on his body, but there was no need to tell them.

Elina pressed her lips together. She didn’t reply right away, just glanced at Jacob, a subtle flick of her eyes. She remembered how just last Monday, Micah had looked brighter, his complexion healthier. Now, his skin was a little dry, yellowish even, and his eyes were tired.

Elina, though, didn’t bring it up. She was afraid it was related to his upcoming birthday.

Every time the Ramsy family had a banquet, Micah would use any means to bail it. Even the last time Zhou Ruyan had personally held one, Micah had ditched it. And Micah cherished his grandmother dearly.

They all knew Micah wasn’t built for banquets, places where everyone wore polite masks, traded barbed compliments, and feigned superiority. He always ended up overwhelmed, frustrated, and inevitably in trouble.

They felt guilty forcing him to attend, especially after last night. He had gotten home before them, waited quietly, and gone to bed alone. The nanny said nothing, but they could imagine how it felt.

Still, bringing it up now would only make things worse. Like they were trying to brush it under the rug. And paint Micah as a sensitive spoiled boy.

So instead, she cleared her throat and tried to sound casual. "What’s your plan for today? Are you free? Do you want to come with me to pick up a dress?"

Micah shook his head. "Nah. I just want to crash at home."

"What’s with the depressed mode?" Willow asked, standing and walking around to his side.

"Yeah, it’s so unlike you." Jacob nodded, now off the phone.

"What? Do you all miss my ranting and snapping?" Micah said with a half smile.

"Honestly, yeah..." Jacob was admitting when Elina glared at him.

Jacob scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.

"Your father is just kidding," Elina said.

Willow sat down beside Micah. "Why don’t you enlighten us on what’s really bothering you?"

Micah sighed. "I don’t want that stupid birthday party..."

"Not again with this, "Willow said, leaning back in her seat.

"I thought it was because of that post..." Jacob mumbled under his breath.

Micah’s head snapped up. "Mum! You told everyone?"

"Your father is not everyone," Elina said quickly, lifting her chin.

"Yeah, today it’s Dad, tomorrow it’s the neighbourhood security guard." Micah rolled his eyes.

"What’s so bad about it?" Elina asked. "Everyone was saying how handsome you are, you claimed the campus flower title without even trying!"

"Mum, do you even know what you’re saying? Campus flower? I am a boy! I should be campus grass!" Micah wailed. "And you are quick to change your stand! Who was that called me the moment she saw the post, threatening me not to make trouble?!"

"When did I do that?" Elina clutched her chest. "Since when did you think of me, your caring mother, as a meddlesome bossy one?"

Micah didn’t comment, just stared at his mother.

"Fine. I was just a bit upset I heard the news from that lousy man..." Elina admitted.

Micah sighed in exasperation. "So please, never say that ’flower’ thing again!"

"Why? What’s the difference? At least you are popular." Elina said with a huff. "Ah, do you know how many years I had to endure the judgmental looks from other parents? They all thought my son was a delinquent, a troublemaker in school! Everyone was distancing themselves from you! Girls ran away the moment I tried to talk to them! But now! It’s the opposite!"

"You weren’t trying to talk to those poor girls," Micah mumbled. "You were interrogating them, wanting to choose a future daughter-in-law."

Elina ignored that. "Yesterday, even the dean of Fine Arts asked me if you’re still in a relationship, if not, she wanted to introduce her son to you!" she said, gushing.

Micah buried his face in his hands and groaned. Then, his head snapped up sharply. "So you just had a problem with Darcy, huh?"

"Everyone else is fine?" Micah asked pointedly.

That made Elina pause. Her expression shifted, thoughtful. "I don’t know... I just didn’t like it."

Micah stared at his mother, studying her expression. He knew she genuinely had no idea why.

Well, it was probably mother instinct. Micah thought.

"So, who was that man?" Willow asked.

"A friend." Micah averted his eyes.

"You have a friend that old?" Willow raised an eyebrow.

"Big sister...What do you mean??" Micah asked. "Why are you so sure he is old?"

Willow glanced at Elina. "I’ve seen the picture. He was wearing a fine business suit."

Of course, they had tried to figure out who the man was. There was no way they had let a stranger get close to Micah without knowing his intentions. He had always been too trusting, especially with the wrong people, like those so-called best friends from before. The fact that this man looked like a businessman only made things worse. It sent them into a quiet panic. Willow had been late last night because she was digging around for clues, and her parents even scanned the banquet crowd, hoping to spot someone who matched. But none of them could bring it up to Micah, not without sounding paranoid or pushy.

Micah shot a glare at Elina. "Mum, don’t tell me you got your hands on that photo and saved it?"

"Of course not, honey. I deleted it the moment we saw it." Elina replied calmly.

"Really?" Micah narrowed his eyes, clearly not convinced.

Elina gave a calm nod. What she didn’t say was that she had just sent it to Willow before deleting it. Technically, she wasn’t lying.

"Anyway, he is not shady," Micah said, puffing his cheek. "If anything, he is a good guy! He even got me to try that Royal Dragon Pavillion’s cuisine, you know that famous Chinese restaurant," he said proudly. "And get this, he’s friends with our Dean, Georgina Malleti! He promised to give my designs to her! You know her Mum, right? She is my idol! From a young age, she was a prodigy in fashion. Her designs made headlines!" Micah said passionately. His voice had taken on a spark. He sat a little straighter, eyes bright.

The other three fell into silence and exchanged looks. They never heard Micah defend someone like that! Even that new friend, Darcy!

Who was this man?! A thought flashed in their minds.
