Chapter 132: Where I Was Meant to Be
Chapter 132: Where I Was Meant to Be
Micah stood quietly at the doorway, his hand resting in the frame. His chest rose and fell slowly as he watched the scene in front of him. Darcy sat beside the hospital bed, adjusting carefully the blanket over his mother. Nora leaned on the edge of the bed, chatting away with a bright smile on her face. Flora, though pale and weak, was smiling too, eyes soft, filled with warmth and love.
The sight made Micah pause.
He could feel the affection between them, so real it was almost overwhelming. It was like a heavy stone that had been sitting on his chest finally rolled off. For the first time since knowing the truth, he could breathe without pain. His shoulders dropped a little, tension easing from his body.
Darcy had a loving mother. Micah’s eyes shifted to Flora. The lines of worry on her face, the way her eyes never strayed far from Darcy, the way she reached to touch his cheek, it was all so clear. She loved him deeply. Her care wasn’t fake or forced. It was genuine. Thank God. Darcy had grown up in a home full of love.
Micah’s fingers tightened around the bag as he stared at the woman on the bed.
He could see the resemblance with himself. From those hazel eyes to facial features. He hadn’t expected that. His breath caught. A lump formed in his throat and a stinging heat built behind his eyes. He didn’t know why... but he was sure. This woman would have accepted him as his own son. Even someone like him, arrogant, short-tempered, impulsive, and insensitive, she would have accepted.
In the novel, there was little interaction between Flora and Micah. Mostly because Micah had chosen to stay with Ramsy’s family, pushing Flora and Nora away, even hurting them. He had gone as far as stopping Flora from getting treatment and ignoring the cry of help from Nora in the Bar. That part always left Micah furious.
Why would he do such a thing?! Why had the book’s Micah been so cruel?
Now standing here, Micah realised something. His fear had always come from not knowing how Flora would react. But the moment he saw her, really saw her, something in his heart told him... she wouldn’t turn him away.
Then, he heard her voice. Weak but worried.
"But this is a private hospital... it must cost a fortune..."
Micah stepped into the room without thinking.
"You don’t need to worry about that. It’s taken care of," he said, voice soft but clear.
Everyone turned to look at him.
Flora blinked, squinting toward the doorway. "Who..."
Darcy stood up, nodding toward him. "Micah, come closer. Sometimes Mum’s vision gets blurry."
Micah walked slowly to the side of the bed, stopping just beside Darcy. He looked down at the frail woman.
"Micah, this is my mum, Flora Tilden," Darcy said, looking at his mother. "Mum, this is my friend, Micah Ramsy. His grandfather arranged the transfer."
Flora tilted her head, her gaze sharpening on his face. Then her eyes widened in surprise. "Oh, my! What a handsome boy! Thank you for helping Darcy at that time and defending him. I couldn’t imagine that doctor being such an awful person!"
Micah smiled, his eyes curving like little crescents behind his glasses. He could still feel the tightness in his chest, but it was a different kind now.
"Hello, ma’am, Darcy is my friend, of course, I help him," he said awkwardly.
Flora waved her hand with a soft laugh. "What ma’am! Call me Aunty Flora!" she said.
"Mum, That’s the handsome brother. The one who saved me!" Nora chirped excitedly, tugging Flora’s sleeve.
"Really?" Flora’s eyes softened even more. "Come, sit down!!" she reached out and gently grabbed Micah’s hand, her fingers thin and cold. "I don’t know how to thank you! You even got hurt trying to protect her! If you hadn’t been there, my daughter..," her voice shook, and she stopped herself, pressing her lips together.
Micah sat on the edge of the nearby chair and gently patted her hand. "It wasn’t anything. Please don’t worry about it. You need to rest, not get upset."
Flora wiped at the corner of her eyes, dabbing gently with a tissue. "You are such a sweet boy. Your parents are worried too much. Honestly, when they came to our house before, I thought you would be like some cold quiet boy, like a statue that doesn’t talk one word!" she laughed.
Micah’s ears turned red, feeling embarrassed. His family really had a knack for ruining his image!
He quickly handed the gifts. "I... brought some gifts. Nothing big. Just a little something for our first meeting..." he mumbled.
Flora’s eyes lit up as she took them. "You didn’t have to, but thank you!"
She opened one of the boxes, gasping when she saw the polished green stone inside.
"Wow, a jade ring! It’s so beautiful!" Flora exclaimed. "But I can’t accept this! This is too valuable!"
"I insist! Darcy knows my uncle had a jewellery store. It’s not that expensive for us. I heard imperial jade is good for health, I thought maybe you’d like it...why don’t you put it on," Micah said scratching the back of his neck.
Flora hesitated, she looked at Darcy. Seeing no objection, she happily slid the ring onto her finger. It fit, though a bit loose.
"If the size needs adjusting, my uncle’s store will do that. Darcy knows where it is." Micah added, eyeing the ring on her pale finger.
"What about me?" Nora asked shamelessly. "Did I get anything?"
Micah handed her another box.
Nora snatched it eagerly and popped it open. "Mum! Look! It’s a pendant in the shape of a puppy!"
The mother and daughter leaned their heads together, admiring and gushing over the beautiful jewellery.
Micah sat quietly beside them, his shoulder relaxing more with every second. The tension that had filled him all day finally started to vanish. He hadn’t expected to feel like this. Warm and comfortable.
From the kitchen, Darcy peeked in with a tray of mugs. He paused, watching the three of them with a small smile on his face. Once again, Micah had somehow charmed everyone.
Then a nurse entered the room, holding a chart. "Oh, I see your son and daughter came to visit you," she said with a kind smile.
Micah stiffened. His back straightened, and his fingers curled tightly around his knee.
Flora blinked. "Oh, no. My son’s in the kitchen. He is his friend."
The nurse laughed. "Really? But this one looked just like you! I thought he was the one!"
Micah’s face turned pale. Sweat formed on the palm of his hands.
Nora stared at Micah. "Now that you said it, he does look a lot like Mum. Especially the eyes! Maybe you are my long-lost brother or something!" she giggled.
Micah opened his mouth, then closed it.
Flora tilted her head, zooming at him.
"Don’t tease the poor boy," she said, patting Nora’s shoulder.
"I’d be happy to be one..." Micah mumbled.
Flora’s eyes widened slightly. "Seriously? I’d love to have a son like you! Do you have a godmother already? If not, I’ll take the job!"
Micah smiled back, really smiled this time. It wasn’t polite or awkward. It was real. Full of emotion. His lips trembled slightly, and his eyes softened.
At the doorway, Darcy stood frozen with the tray still in his hands. His eyes were locked on Micah.
That smile.
There was something in that smile. His heart trembled. He didn’t know why but he wanted to keep that image forever.
