Chapter 131: The Woman Behind Two Lives

Micah returned to his dorm room and quietly shut the door behind him. His hands were full, juggling small gift bags he had picked up earlier. With a sigh, he dropped them on the desk.

"Hey, where’d you go?" Nick asked from his bunk, eyeing the bags. "Were you out shopping or something? What’s in there?"

Micah dragged himself toward the bed and flopped onto it face-first. "Gifts. I’m visiting someone in the hospital tomorrow."

"Oh, no. Is everything okay?" Emile asked softly. "Is it why you didn’t come tonight with us?"

"Yeah, she has been in and out of the hospital for a while now" Micah replied, rolling onto his back. "So tomorrow, you guys are on your own. I’m heading out before seven."

The room echoed with a groan in unison. Except for Micah, the other three were notoriously bad at waking up early.

Micah chuckled and buried his face into the pillow. The day had been long, and tomorrow was going to be worse. He had already planned to meet Darcy in the morning. It was strange. He had told himself he was fine with meeting Flora, but now that it was really happening, a heavy feeling pressed against his chest.

As he lay there, a thought popped into his head. The hospital bill. He still hadn’t paid the man back.

Micah groaned and reached for his phone.

He quickly sent Clyde a message. But after a few exchanges, Micah stared at the screen, fuming.

"Unbelievable," he muttered under his breath. Every time they talked, Clyde managed to get under his skin.

That jerk! They were like fire and water. Always clashing.

As he rubbed his temple, his eyes landed on the RiverBridge account.

He blinked. Right. He hadn’t replied to Aidan yet. The last time he messaged, he had withdrawn the text at the last second. He slipped up. Things had been left hanging.

Micah sat back and bit his lip. He was heading back to the Ramsy estate this weekend, whether he wanted to or not. He might as well use the time. Maybe he could meet Aidan in person. Of course as Asena, not himself.

The whole thing was risky. His association with Aidan was too unstable. He feared Aidan could connect it to him somehow after his slip-up. He needed to convince him that this account belonged to a girl. Maybe seeing her in person would make him lower his guard. Maybe Micah could dig up more information that way.

His thumb hesitated over the screen for just a second, then typed.

RogueOverlord: Hey...About our last conversation, I’ve done some thinking. I want to meet you in person.

He stared at the message, waiting. After a few minutes, a reply came.

RiverBridge: When?

RogueOverlord: This weekend.

RiverBridge: Let me check my schedule. I’ll see if I have time.

RogueOverlord: Sure, I’ll wait.

Micah read the chat one more time, then locked his phone. He threw it beside the pillow and rolled into his side. His eyes stared blankly at the wall.

On the other end, Clyde sat in the living room with a light twitch on his brow.

He reached for the office mobile phone and dialled his assistant. "Find out where Aidan Wilson is going to be this weekend," he said flatly. "I want details."

There was a pause on the other end before the assistant replied. "Right away, sir."

Clyde hung up the call and leaned back in his seat. His plan was simple. If he knew where Aidan would be, he could show up too. And lure Micah there, disguised or not.

And when the boy saw Aidan was the man he had argued with before, Clyde would step in.

That way Micah would not contact Aidan anymore. And he could get a few extra points.

Clyde sighed in exasperation. "That boy... is going to drive me insane."

The next morning, Micah woke up before his alarm and rubbed his eyes. He sat up slowly, then let out a breath. A small puff of determination crossed his face.

Today was important.

After a long shower, he stood in front of the mirror, towel around his neck. He carefully styled his hair. Once satisfied, he put on an indigo shirt and tucked in neatly black trousers. The outfit made him look mature, clean and low-key. He grabbed the gifts from the desk and stepped out.

For the first time, Darcy was not in sight. Micah blinked in surprise, then chuckled softly. "Guess I’m early for once."

He checked the time. Ten minutes ahead. He made his way to the fourth floor and stopped in front of Room 412. He stood quietly, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

Five minutes passed. The door creaked open. Darcy stood there in casual clothes, his hair slightly messy from rushing. His eyes widened for a second.

"Yo!" Micah grinned and raised a hand, his usual smug expression in place.

Darcy blinked, then smiled. "You are early."

"Yeah. Kinda surprised myself!" Micah said.

They didn’t waste time. After grabbing something for breakfast, they hailed a taxi and headed straight to Nora’s school.

As soon as the car door opened, a figure sprinted toward them.

"Brother!" Nora shouted, eyes shining with excitement.

Micah froze for a second behind Darcy. His steps faltered, expression was a bit unnatural. But he quickly masked it with a polite smile.

"How have you been?" Darcy said with a smile. He patted Nora’s head affectionately.

"Fine," Nora said proudly. "I get along well with other girls. Don’t worry." she then glanced at Micah, a spark of mischief in her eyes. "Long time no see, handsome rich brother. Where is your car?" she craned her neck in surprise. "Don’t tell me my brother got you disowned?"

Micah blinked, and his heart sank. "Huh?"

For a second, he thought Nora knew the truth.

"Ah, my friends saw my WeChat moments and start shipping you two together! Even I start to come up with the names! Like the arrogant prince & his loyal guard. The young monarch & his ruthless Regent!"

Darcy flicked her forehead. "Stop reading those messy BL books."

"Hey! Don’t do that!" Nora scrunched up her face and rubbed her forehead.

Micah found his voice, figuring out Nora’s meaning. "Nah, my cars are at home. There is no parking space on campus."

"But seriously! Am I wrong? After the amusing park, you two were like conjoined twins, always hanging out, and having fun without me. I wouldn’t be surprised if his parents started getting suspicious!"

"On the contrary, they are happy I am not messing around." Micah said with a shrug. "So nowadays, military training counts as fun?"

"I don’t care. From now on, I’m tagging along." She huffed, crossing her arms.

"Alright," Darcy cut in. "Come on, Mum is waiting."

They soon arrived at the Private hospital, the one funded by the Ramsy family. Micah’s grandpa had made arrangements for Flora to stay here, away from the media and the Durant family.

They made their way down the hall. Micah trailed behind them, clutching the gift bag in both hands.

Inside the ward, a petite woman sat on the bed by the window. Her back was straight, her shoulder-length brown hair tucked behind one ear. She looked outside, lost in thought. Her pale skin and soft features gave her a delicate appearance. Nicer than Micah had imagined.

"Mum!" Nora called out.

The woman turned toward the sound, her hazel eyes lighting up as soon as she saw them. "Ah, my sweet kids!" Flora said warmly.

Darcy stepped forward, placing a small box on the side table. "How are you feeling, Mum? I was held up on campus, I couldn’t make you homemade soup. But this is the sweet brand you like."

"Come here. I just want to see you. I don’t care about the soup." Flora said, reaching her hand toward Darcy.

Darcy stepped closer and leaned forward. Flora touched his cheeks. "You’ve lost weight!" she said in distress. "Was it hard military training? My poor son. You need to eat more. Don’t wear yourself out. I’ll be fine. It’s just a chronic illness. You don’t have to spend so much..."

Darcy placed his hand on Flora’s that was on his cheek. "No, I didn’t have any work lately. So it’s not because of that."

"But this is a private hospital... it must cost a fortune," Flora said softly, glancing around.

"You don’t need to worry about that. It’s taken care of," Micah said suddenly.

Flora turned her head to the sound. "Who..."

Darcy spoke. "Micah, come closer. Sometimes Mum’s vision gets blurry."

Micah hesitated, then stepped closer. His fingers shook as he tightened his grip on the gift bag.

His feet carried toward the bed. His chest thudded. He was finally face to face with the woman who had raised Darcy. And the one who had given birth to him.
