Chapter 8: Surprised Rong Shuang—Were Jiang Feng’s Buns That Popular? “Is this your wife and kid? They’re so pretty!”
“First, let’s tidy up and grab something to eat.”
Jiang Feng steamed fifteen buns and began cleaning. The shop wasn’t hard to tidy—mostly just plates. The high school girls who had eaten earlier had left the tables spotless.
He washed the plates, wiped the tables, tied up the trash bag, and swept the floor. Twenty minutes later, sunlight streamed into the now-spotless shop. Feeling a sense of accomplishment, Jiang Feng picked up a bun and ate.
After lunch, he took a half-hour nap on a chair to recharge. At 1:38 PM, he got up, stretched, and felt much less tired. He stepped out to buy more ingredients—if he didn’t prepare the buns for the evening by 4:30, he’d be late picking up his daughter.
“Where are you headed, Boss Jiang?” Cui Hao, sitting at the shop entrance smoking, greeted him.
“Buying ingredients for tonight’s buns,” Jiang Feng replied.
“Take my e-trike. Carrying everything by hand is too much trouble.” Cui Hao pointed at a green electric tricycle parked nearby.
Jiang Feng didn’t refuse—having wheels would save time and effort.
“Alright, I’ll borrow it. Be back in twenty.”
“No rush. Be safe,” Cui Hao said warmly.
Jiang Feng rode to the market.
“Twelve pounds of beef, fifteen pounds of pork.”
“Ten pounds of chives, ten pounds of fennel—those fresh ones over there. Also fifteen pounds of scallions and some carrots.”
He knew exactly what he needed. After spending 735 yuan and 45 cents, he returned with all the ingredients.
“Brother Cui, leaving the trike here.”
“Need help unloading?”
“No, I’ve got it!”
Back in the shop, he checked the time—1:57 PM.
“Having the right tools really saves time.” His own e-bike wasn’t safe for heavy loads.
“Maybe I’ll buy a car in a few days.”
He considered a 100,000-yuan electric car—no range anxiety in the city, no license plate restrictions, and no heartache if it got dirty or scratched.
As he mused, he got to work.
By 3:40 PM, the dough and fillings were ready. He didn’t start wrapping yet—buns tasted best within forty minutes of steaming.
At 4:20 PM, he grabbed the pickup card and headed to the kindergarten.
Kids were already being led out by teachers. Today, the assistant teacher brought out Youyou.
Before Jiang Feng could spot her, a voice chirped: “Daddy!”
He turned just as the little girl barreled into his legs, nuzzling her face against him.
Beside them stood Rong Shuang, now in casual clothes—jeans, a white T-shirt, her hair loosely tied. But her striking beauty made passing fathers glance repeatedly.
“Teacher Rong? Why did you bring her out?”
Rong Shuang felt nervous. Ever since learning Jiang Feng was divorced, her heart raced around him.
Little Jiang Youyou looked up. “Daddy, I invited Teacher Rong Shuang to eat at our shop! Pleeease?”
She deployed her cutest pout, eyes sparkling.
Jiang Feng flicked her forehead lightly and smiled apologetically at Rong Shuang. “Sorry, Teacher Rong. Kids don’t know better—please don’t feel obliged.”
He knew she’d once rejected a father’s dinner invite and even transferred his child to another class. He assumed she avoided such situations—maybe she had a boyfriend.
Carrying Youyou, he gave her a warning look: One more stunt, and no ice cream this month.
The little girl rolled her eyes, exasperated.
But Rong Shuang spoke up: “Mr. Jiang, I’d really like to try your cooking. It wasn’t just Youyou’s idea.”
Surprised, Jiang Feng glanced at his daughter, who blinked innocently. See?
“Alright, but we only have buns tonight. If that’s fine, you’re welcome to join.”
“Of course.”
Holding Youyou’s hand, Jiang Feng led the way, Rong Shuang beside them. Envious stares followed—from men (So what if he’s handsome?) and women alike.
At the shop, several elderly customers swarmed Jiang Feng the moment he appeared.
“Young man, where’ve you been? Hurry up and start cooking!”
“Missed out at noon—don’t tell me you’re sold out tonight too!”
“Thirty for me! My grandkids won’t stop begging!”
Jiang Feng reassured them, “Starting right away. Please wait inside.”
As he unlocked the shop, Rong Shuang watched, stunned.
His food is this popular? People line up for it?
Before she could process it, a small hand tugged hers.
“Teacher, Daddy’s busy. I’ll take care of you!”
Youyou dashed inside, pulling out a chair. “Sit here, Teacher Rong!”
Amused, Rong Shuang fetched a chair for her too. “You sit here.”
The elderly customers eyed Rong Shuang curiously. “Boss, is this your wife and kid?”
“Such a pretty lady!”
“No wonder the girl’s so cute—takes after her parents.”
Flustered, Rong Shuang blushed.
Jiang Feng clarified, “This is my daughter’s teacher, here for dinner.”
The group apologized hastily.
“Sorry, dear—just making conversation.”
Rong Shuang smiled. “It’s fine.”
One woman asked Jiang Feng, “So where’s your wife? At work?”
“Divorced. Got the papers yesterday.”
Their eyes lit up. “Looking to remarry?”
“My neighbor’s daughter is 25, very pretty—”
“Hold on! My niece is 23, works at the archives—stable job!”
As they bombarded him with matchmaking, Rong Shuang felt a pang of irritation.
Why is he so in demand?
But she stayed quiet—until Youyou piped up: “Grandpas and grandmas, if you want to find Daddy a wife, I get to approve first!”
“I like pretty ones—as pretty as Teacher Rong!”
The crowd laughed.
“Wow, you’ve got your dad all figured out!”
“Then he might stay single—finding someone as beautiful as your teacher won’t be easy.”
“Who knew you were the boss here?”
Rong Shuang’s mood lifted, a small smile playing on her lips.
Then the elders turned to her. “Young lady, do you have a boyfriend?”
Youyou’s eyes gleamed—they’d asked the very question she’d planned to bring up at dinner!
