Chapter 866: Silent Pursuit
After they parted ways, some time later, Dalamadur, along with Taejin Yun and his group, also arrived at the exit of Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain.
"You didn’t lie to me?" Dalamadur narrowed his eyes, slightly suspicious that these humans had intentionally led him away from the mountain.
"None of us here could possibly be your match, my lord. How would we dare deceive you? We came to Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain only to capture the Pixiu. If it hadn’t lured you out, we wouldn’t have provoked you at all," Taejin Yun explained humbly.
"It’s better be so," Dalamadur thought, believing they didn’t have the guts to scheme against him.
Meanwhile, Amalia and Kenny Lin were desperately fleeing in disarray.
They hadn’t been far from the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain, but for some unknown reason, devils had received some message and were now hunting them down.
After being discovered once, they had been relentlessly pursued, and they sensed an even more powerful devil nearby, far stronger than a Grand Lord.
They didn’t dare get close and immediately started running for their lives. This was the first time they had been in such a sorry state since arriving on the Mystic Void Continent. Even Kenny Lin couldn’t act arrogant anymore.
After escaping a considerable distance, they found a temporary hiding spot in a cave and drenched themselves with tree sap.
Tree holes were no longer safe. The devils seemed to have discovered the holes they had previously dug and were knocking down any large tree they encountered.
"Why is a Monarch-level devil here?" Amalia asked, referring to a devil that was as strong as a human cultivator in the Body Integration Stage—an extremely powerful level.
"Maybe they’re leaving nothing to chance for humans to survive," Kenny Lin responded, his expression serious.
"Do you think the humans have sent any Body Integration Stage cultivators? If a real fight breaks out, the humans won’t stand a chance against a Monarch-level devil."
"Maybe a fight won’t even happen. If they were going to do that, wouldn’t they have already wiped out all the humans at Silent Echo Valley? Sneaking around like this reeks of a conspiracy."
Amalia suddenly said, "Haven’t you noticed that these devils seem to be holding back? They want to kill us but are hesitant to strike too hard."
Kenny Lin paused for a moment, then asked, "Do you remember what the bodies of those humans we saw looked like?"
Amalia thought back. "I remember they were mostly intact, with very few surface injuries..." She stopped mid-sentence.
The two of them exchanged glances, speaking simultaneously.
"They’re trying to use human identities to infiltrate human society."
That explained the sneaking around. They weren’t fully focused on competing with the humans for the Pixiu but were covertly hunting down humans instead.
"Why do they want to infiltrate humans? Are they planning another invasion like the one thousands of years ago?"
"Who knows? But that’s not our concern for now. If those Pixiu don’t show up soon, we should leave Silent Echo Valley," Kenny Lin was tired of this constant hiding and preferred acting instead.
"Let’s wait one more hour. If they don’t show up, we’ll retreat to the outskirts," Amalia said, recognizing the vast power difference that left them with no better choice.
As they talked, they stayed hidden. The tree sap covering their bodies helped them avoid detection by the devils.
Of course, this was the ideal scenario. If that Monarch-level devil were to personally search, they might not be able to hide.
Sometimes, a bad premonition can be strangely accurate, especially at critical moments.
In a place some distance away, the devils received word that Taejin Yun and his group had left the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain, along with a powerful demonic beast.
"We can’t delay any longer. Those two disciples from the Green Lotus Sect must be found immediately!" The monarch-level devil paced back and forth, hands clasped behind his back. "I will search them personally."
"My lord," Forvach exclaimed in shock, "Won’t this alert other powerful figures?"
"Green Lotus Sect is the key. If we miss this opportunity and they regroup, it will be nearly impossible to find another. You’ve been chasing them for so long, and yet no powerful figures from the Green Lotus Sect have appeared. They’re probably over near the Ten Thousand Beasts Mountain. I can’t wait any longer," the Monarch-level devil said, a cold and decisive light flashing in his eyes. He began to release a divine sense similar to that of cultivators, searching inch by inch. With him at the center, nothing within a radius of several kilometers would escape his detection.
Forvach and the others could only sigh at their own incompetence. How could they have failed to catch two weak human cultivators?
Forvach shot a glare at Osmos. If it weren’t for Osmos’s incompetence in letting the two Green Lotus Sect disciples escape, things wouldn’t have gotten so complicated.
Osmos didn’t dare say anything; even now, he didn’t understand how those two humans had managed to slip away.
The surroundings were eerily silent, but Amalia had an ominous feeling, as if something terrible was about to happen.
"We need to go," Kenny Lin suddenly said. He grabbed her and dashed out of the small cave they were hiding in, rushing deeper into Silent Echo Valley at an astonishing speed. The devils had blocked the edge of the ridge, so they had no choice but to take a detour.
Not long after they left the cave, an invisible force swept through it.
"Huh?" The Monarch-level devil let out a soft murmur of surprise.
"My lord, did you detect their tracks?" Forvach and the others immediately asked with delight.
"They’re likely heading east. Go there immediately!" The Monarch-level devil, unwilling to let them escape, gave the order, ready to kill rather than miss a chance.
The devils responded promptly, splitting into several groups and conducting a thorough search, leaving no possible hiding spot unchecked.
"Why did you move so suddenly? Did you sense something?" Amalia finally asked after the intense sense of danger began to fade.
