Chapter 1009: Breakthrough (Part 2)

"Be careful. Don’t specifically target the brightest boxes," Amalia cautioned, worried for his safety.

In the cold currents, the brighter a box glowed, the faster it moved, to the point of leaving behind only blurred afterimages that were nearly impossible to follow with the naked eye.

Kenny Lin locked his focus on the rapidly flowing boxes. When one particularly brilliant light streaked past him, he reacted in an instant.

This time, his hand landed firmly on a box surrounded by an intense glow.

The half-submerged body was being carried by the force of the box itself, pulling it along.

Kenny Lin immediately felt the crushing spatial resistance pressing him downward. The box in his grasp vibrated fiercely, desperate to escape his grip, but he smirked coldly.

"Trying to run? Not that easy!"

If the space had resistance, he would use that very resistance to help him capture the box.

Amalia, deeply worried, couldn’t focus on retrieving her own box. Her eyes stayed fixed on Kenny Lin, who was being flung through the air.

"Let it go if you have to!" she shouted.

"No way!" Kenny Lin didn’t hesitate as he struck at another box mid-air. Using the explosion of force from his attack, he grasped the now-defenseless box as it plummeted downward.

Due to the resistance, the box fell at a speed much faster than normal.

Kenny Lin, unable to stabilize himself, fell straight into the river.

The immense suction force at the river’s bottom immediately latched onto his entire body, dragging him relentlessly downward.

With a sharp palm strike, he sent a wave of energy through the water. The clash slowed his descent, but only momentarily.

At that moment, a hand grabbed his arm and pulled him upward with all its might.

Under the worried gazes of the Green Lotus Sect disciples, the two of them emerged from the river, gasping for air.

"That scared me! I thought they were going to sink to the bottom!" Renshu Chang exhaled a deep sigh of relief.

He had personally experienced the river’s suction force before. During an experiment to see how far they could go before the force became overwhelming, they found that once submerged beyond one meter, the suction doubled in strength.

Within one meter, they could still resist it somewhat.

Kenny Lin’s fall from such a height had taken him well beyond that threshold. For a moment, Renshu Chang was convinced he wouldn’t make it back up.

With Kenny Lin as a cautionary example, the others didn’t dare follow his lead.

Those who had originally set their sights on the brightest boxes had no choice but to avert their gazes in frustration. Until a strategy was devised, they resolved to target the less challenging boxes instead.

"Are you insane? I told you to be careful!" Amalia yelled, her voice trembling slightly as the adrenaline began to wear off.

The thought of him nearly being dragged to the river’s depths, never to return, made her heart pound uncomfortably. It was the first time she’d felt such overwhelming fear. She had always thought herself indifferent to most things.

Kenny Lin, still dripping with energy-laden water, absorbed it into his body with a broad grin. Ignoring the scolding, he handed the dimmed box to her.

"See if it’s the Phoenix Feather you’ve been looking for."

Amalia’s anger dissipated halfway, replaced by exasperation. "Don’t ever do that again. At least inform me next time so we can plan together."

"Got it, got it! Now open it!" Kenny Lin urged impatiently.

Amalia peeked through a small gap in the box. Her eyes widened briefly before she swiftly stored it away.

"Look! Those wandering spirits are crossing the plaza—they’re heading this way!"

One of the cultivators who was standing at the edge glanced back and, to his horror, saw the wandering spirits already rushing toward them. Dozens of Soul Formation stage and Deity Transformation stage spirits surged forward, their glowing red eyes bulging grotesquely, their movements frenzied as if driven by madness.

This was no ordinary event. In the past, such spirits never had this chance because their Supreme Kings had always carried the tokens and entered the Immortal Palace without assistance. Never had there been a day like today—where all the Supreme Kings had united to shatter the immortal palace’s barrier together.

This rare collaboration presented an unprecedented opportunity for the wandering spirits. If they could just reach the river and absorb its boundless power, they, too, could become as formidable as the Supreme Kings.

And so, they charged like maniacs. A once-in-a-lifetime chance dangled before them, one they knew they might never see again if they failed.

Finally, the Body Integration stage spirits emerged from the rear, crossing the plaza with fury emanating from their every step.

They took to the skies in rage, exuding crushing auras that dwarfed everything around them. With unmatched power and speed, they soared toward the river.

The wandering spirits that had been running ahead? Forget it—they didn’t even make it to the river. They were overtaken, and many were outright obliterated by the overwhelming pressure of the Body Integration stage spirits. Only a handful of them managed to survive the ordeal.

As the observers watched in terror and hearts pounding, something unexpected happened. The Body Integration stage spirits didn’t charge upstream to slaughter them. Instead, as soon as they reached the river, they each picked a spot and began cultivating furiously.

"What’s going on? Why didn’t they attack us?" Confusion spread like wildfire among the crowd.

"Maybe they’re waiting for us to go down there so they can ambush us all at once?" someone speculated.

The more they considered it, the more plausible the idea seemed to be. Already uneasy, the group grew even more anxious.

"Well, there’s no point worrying now," Kenny Lin remarked with a resigned shrug. "We’ll deal with whatever happens when the time comes."

"And besides, we’re not the only ones nervous," one cultivator muttered, glancing discreetly at the young elites from the major sects.
