Chapter 276: Being Followed
Chapter 276: Chapter 276: Being Followed
After leaving the airport, Brandon Reese was outside waiting. Serena Summers and Lucas Shaw got into the car and gave him an address.
Although Brandon was curious about why they were heading to the mountains, as a competent assistant, he wisely chose not to ask.
Serena Summers looked at the rapidly passing scenery outside the window, her lips tightly pursed and her complexion very solemn.
Suddenly, a warm and broad palm tightly grasped her hand.
She turned her head and met the man’s dark and deep eyes; for some reason, her chaotic thoughts seemed to be smoothed out instantly, and she was no longer as tense.
She clasped the man’s hand back, fingers interlocked, and gave him a faint smile.
This time, she wanted to thoroughly search the shelves of her master’s books to see if she could find any alternative medicinal ingredients.
Ideally, she would find ingredients with similar effects that were more common because with so many missing children, it would be impossible to produce enough antidote.
Despite her exceptional memory from childhood and her photographic memory, she always felt something was missing.
Only by checking herself would she be able to feel at ease.
Lucas Shaw didn’t ask more and just pulled her into his arms, his palm gently patting her shoulder, silently comforting her.
Serena Summers was deep in thought when suddenly she heard the man’s cold and suppressed voice above her head, "Brandon, step on it, lose the car behind us."
"Someone is following us?" Serena Summers immediately lifted her head from his embrace and looked towards the rear of the car.
Indeed, there was a car following them at a not too distant nor too close range.
Brandon steered the car to an intersection and took a sharp turn. The car behind them also changed direction.
They maintained a consistent distance the entire way, clearly tailing them on purpose.
Lucas Shaw’s expression could not be described as merely grim; it was as if dark clouds were looming over him, his deep eyes flashing with a cold glint, fixedly watching the car reflected in the rearview mirror.
Brandon cursed under his breath and floored the accelerator, causing the car to instantly pick up speed.
The car behind them also accelerated but still dared not get too close, apparently still cautious.
Lucas Shaw looked at Serena Summers’ complexion, thinking she was scared, and whispered reassuringly, "Don’t worry, this is Shaw Family territory, they might not make a move here."
He was not yet sure who was actually following them, so for now, their only choice was to shake them off.
However, the car behind them was not to be underestimated; no matter how fast Brandon drove, they managed to keep up quickly.
Even though they knew they had been exposed, they still relentlessly pursued, making one wonder what their true intention was.
In the car behind them, a slightly overweight middle-aged man looked ferociously at the car ahead.
He gripped the steering wheel tightly, veins bulging on the back of his hand.
In the passenger seat, there was a man of a similar age, wearing sunglasses and a gold chain, with a handgun hidden in his pants pocket.
"What are you doing? Hurry up and follow them! If we lose them, see how the boss deals with you!" the man with sunglasses complained to the driver.
The driver gave him a cold glance and said, "If you can do it, then go ahead. If you can’t, then shut up!"
The man with sunglasses was instantly rendered speechless.
The driver’s eyes were fixed on the car ahead as he said solemnly, "We’ve been exposed. Check with the boss what our next move should be."
The man with sunglasses reluctantly took out his phone to call their boss.
"The boss said, go big or go home, let’s kidnap them," the man stated coldly, his voice carrying a chilling ruthlessness that made one shiver.
Serena Summers and Lucas Shaw sat in the car ahead, looking serious.
Being followed as soon as they returned meant either the other party knew of their movements or that they had been lying in wait there all along.
Soon, that car caught up with them, maintaining a parallel position.
The window of the car rolled down, revealing two unfamiliar faces.
"Miss Summers, Mr. Shaw, our boss invites you to reminisce about old times."
Lucas Shaw and Serena Summers exchanged glances and then rolled down their car window as well.
Lucas Shaw leaned back in his seat, looking casual and languid with a smirk playing at the corners of his lips, "Reminisce? So it seems we’re familiar with each other?"
The man with the sunglasses paused, realizing his mistake, and roared in a failed attempt to cover it up, "Cut the crap, whether you like it or not, you’re coming with us."
"My time is precious, and if someone wants to see me, they’d better be worth it," Lucas Shaw’s eyes narrowed slightly, releasing a hint of dangerous light.
The man with the sunglasses scratched his head, temporarily at a loss for words.
"You refuse a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit; Mr. Shaw, since you won’t take the soft approach, don’t blame us for getting rough!"
The driver snorted coldly and then swerved the steering wheel, crashing directly into Lucas Shaw’s car.
The sudden impact caused Serena Summers to stagger uncontrollably for a moment, her body lurching forward, nearly hitting the back of the seat in front of her.
Lucas Shaw, with quick reflexes, blocked her forehead with his hand, pulling her tightly into his arms as his eyes instantly turned icy cold.
Serena Summers was also infuriated, not expecting the other party to be so insolent.
After Brandon Reese had put some distance between their car and the pursuers, Serena Summers told him to pull over to the side of the road.
Brandon Reese hesitated for a moment and sought Lucas Shaw’s approval with a look.
With his affirmation, Brandon Reese pulled the car over to the side and stopped.
Serena Summers opened the door and got out, "Brandon, get out."
Obediently, Brandon did as he was told, still unclear about what was happening. By the time he realized it, Serena Summers had already moved to the driver’s seat.
With no other option, he hurried to the passenger seat.
But just as he opened the door and was about to climb in, a piercing gaze suddenly swept over him, sharp as an icy blade, seemingly ready to tear him apart in the next second.
Brandon, having a lightbulb moment, quickly yielded the spot and obediently settled himself in the back seat.
He hadn’t expected a man in love to be so petty, not even willing to let anyone else sit in his lady’s passenger seat.
Life is hard for a single guy like him.
It’s all tears when you talk about it!
Without showing any expression, Lucas Shaw opened the passenger door and got in.
"Sit tight." When he had fastened his seatbelt, Serena Summers hit the gas, and the car shot forward instantly.
The speed was unbelievably fast, turning the roadside scenery into mere streaks of afterimages.
Unprepared, Brandon swayed for a moment, nervously gripping the handhold above his head.
There were many cars on the road, seen from above, a black car dashed at a tremendous speed, weaving swiftly through the traffic, quickly leaving the car that had been following them behind.
The moment Serena Summers took her place in the driver’s seat, her aura changed dramatically.
The girl, who was once soft and demure, now had a fierce look in her eyes, exuding an air of murderous intent all over.
Her driving was as smooth as flowing water, leaving Brandon staring in astonishment, so impressed he couldn’t find the words.
He hadn’t expected their lady to be capable of such a feat.
Her driving skills were on par with top-notch racing drivers, proficient and quick, utterly unpredictable.
