Chapter 275: Chapter 275: Wherever You Go, I Will Follow
Serena Summers slowly swallowed the food she had been chewing before asking, "Dean, what happened? Don’t panic, take your time."
"The situation is like this, another child was found near a residential building in the suburbs, presenting the same symptoms as Lucas Fletcher."
Because Serena had the phone on speaker, Lucas Shaw also heard Dean Carter’s words.
His hand, holding chopsticks, paused for a moment, then he exchanged a glance with Serena.
Serena came back to her senses, put down the steamed dumpling in her hand, and her expression grew more solemn, "Dean, is it another child that went missing from the Imperial Capital before?"
"Yes, but the police have already checked the surveillance footage and didn’t find anything. The child’s condition seems to be more severe than Lucas Fletcher’s. The police asked me to get in touch with you on behalf of the hospital."
"I’ll be right there."
After hanging up, Serena quickly changed her clothes, washed up briefly, and left the house with Lucas Shaw.
Everything happened so abruptly that Serena still hadn’t fully processed it even when she saw the child.
She checked the child’s pulse and indeed, like Lucas Fletcher, he had been poisoned.
The only difference was that this child bore injuries, including marks of having been whipped.
Both his calves and arms showed signs of fractures.
Unlike Lucas Fletcher, this child came from an ordinary family, but it was clear that his parents loved him deeply.
The child’s mother stayed by the bedside, crying in her husband’s arms, with eyes filled with pain and heartache.
Dean Carter was extremely anxious, his heart almost in his throat. Only after Serena retracted her hand did he tentatively ask, "Serena, how is it?"
Serena slowly shook her head and took out a Spring Elixir from her bag, feeding one to the child.
It was rumored that the Spring Elixir could neutralize all poisons, but the poison affecting these children was not common; the elixir could only provide temporary relief, not a complete cure.
Nevertheless, buying even a moment’s reprieve was something.
Edward Selwyn and Lucas Shaw’s men had already been sent out to find the necessary herbs.
"I need to administer acupuncture on this child to temporarily suppress the poison in his body."
The child was very young; even for the sake of saving him, consent from the parents was necessary.
Looking at each other, the parents ultimately turned their gaze to Dean Carter.
Dean Carter, as the head of Clearview Medical Research Institute, represented the authority of Corland’s medical community.
Although they had never encountered such a significant figure before, they instinctively wanted to trust him.
Dean Carter nodded his head and softly consoled them, "Don’t worry. Despite her young age, her medical skills are very advanced."
Hearing Dean Carter say this, the couple still harbored doubts, but they agreed nonetheless.
Even Dean Carter said he was out of options; now, all that was left was to take a gamble.
The life of their child was more important than anything else.
With their permission, Serena immediately brought out her silver needles.
Within about half an hour, the child’s complexion visibly improved.
The child’s mother rushed to the bedside, gripping his small hand tightly, her eyes full of worry, "Miss Summers, why isn’t my child waking up? He wouldn’t be..."
"Don’t overthink it; your son is just temporarily unconscious, he’s not in serious danger," Serena said softly to comfort her.
"Really?" The child’s mother’s eyes filled with tears and gratitude as she looked at Serena, "Thank you, thank you so much..."
"It’s what I should do. You should thank the police, really. If they hadn’t found him in time, it would have been unimaginable."
Before arriving, Serena had learned that the child had been abandoned next to a trash bin, barely alive when found.
He was discovered by a cleaning lady collecting trash in the morning, and she reported it to the police promptly.
After leaving the hospital ward, Serena said to Dean Carter, "Dean, I may need to return to S city."
"Leave at this time? For how long? Will you come back?"
Dean Carter was so surprised that his eyes widened, his expression serious.
Serena smiled reassuringly, "I’ll be back. I’m just going to pick up some things and will return tomorrow."
Professor Parker, who had been silent for a long time, suddenly said, "Serena, if you leave and there’s another accident here, what will we do?"
Serena’s gaze was calm as she explained seriously, "I’ve left medication. If those two children have another episode, give it to them to eat; it can temporarily suppress the poison in their bodies."
On the way back, Serena leaned tiredly against the back of the driver’s seat, lost in thought.
Lucas Shaw glanced at her and asked with concern, "Really going back? What if another child is found while you’re away?"
Serena let out a light laugh and then slowly shook her head, "No, that won’t happen."
Lucas Shaw raised an eyebrow, "So sure?"
"Of course." Serena’s eyes narrowed slightly, a subtle glint passing through them, "Didn’t we discuss earlier how the timing of Lucas Fletcher’s appearance was too coincidental?"
Lucas Shaw tapped the steering wheel lightly with his well-defined fingers, asking casually, "What are you thinking?"
Serena and Lucas Shaw exchanged a knowing smile, "You know me best."
She then shared her thoughts with him, piecing together the scattered clues.
The timing of Lucas Fletcher’s discovery coincided with their originally scheduled arrival time in the Imperial Capital.
Now, within less than two days, another child had appeared.
Yesterday she went to check on Lucas Fletcher, temporarily suppressing the poison in his body but not providing an antidote.
"Is it possible... since they stole the samples from me, that they don’t have an antidote either?"
Lucas Shaw pondered for a moment before nodding, "You make sense. Seventeen years ago, all those formulas were destroyed. If they wanted to develop a newer, more potent drug, they would need a lot of experimentation."
A lot of experimentation also meant the risk of fatalities.
Such large-scale disappearances were bound to attract police attention.
So, they took a shortcut.
That was deliberately letting the children injected with the drug go, hoping Serena would develop an antidote.
That way, they could reap the benefits without doing the work themselves.
It was indeed a cunning plan.
Lucas Shaw’s expression darkened, a cold light flashing across his deep, dark eyes.
Serena sighed, casting aside the messy thoughts, and turned to Lucas Shaw with a bright smile, "Aren’t you going to ask why I’m going back to S city?"
Lucas Shaw chuckled, "Wherever you go, I’ll follow."
What mattered was not what they were going to do.
"Aren’t you worried about the danger?" Serena asked him, feigning surprise.
Lucas Shaw let out a resigned laugh, "Silly girl, if there’s danger, I need to be even closer to you."
Watching him speak so seriously, for some reason, Serena’s heart raced, and her cheeks flushed with a growing warmth.
The usually cold and composed man, when he suddenly poured his heart out, truly wasn’t something most people could withstand.
