Forced to Marry the Sickly Billionaire -
Chapter 257: Awakening
Chapter 257: Chapter 257: Awakening
With everything prepared, Serena Summers lay in a hospital bed, Lucas Shaw gripping her hand tightly as he sat by the bed.
Liam Shaw drew the antidote into a syringe with practiced movements and injected it into Serena’s body.
Every so often, they would check on her status.
Various pieces of equipment were connected to Serena, monitoring the changes in her bodily condition.
The mechanical "beep beep" sound of the machines echoed nonstop in the quiet lab, and with each beep, everyone’s heart would clench.
After the injection, Serena fell into a coma with no signs of awakening for three full days.
Lucas Shaw kept a constant vigil by her bedside for those three days and nights.
He was usually very particular about cleanliness, but this time, he would not even consider changing his clothes.
Liam Shaw and his two senior brothers also stood guard, going nowhere.
"What’s going on? It’s been three days and nights; why hasn’t there been any movement?" Vincent Carter spoke for the first time in three days, and due to the long silence, his voice was somewhat hoarse.
But he could not hide the concern and urgency in his tone.
Liam Shaw shook his head, "I wasn’t involved in the research process, so I’m not clear about the specific side effects Serena mentioned. Now all we can do is wait."
"How long are we going to wait?" Vincent Carter leaned on his forehead, and let out a deep sigh.
Edward Selwyn patted his shoulder but did not speak, his eyes fixed steadily on the person sleeping on the hospital bed.
Only when his gaze met Lucas Shaw’s sharp eyes did he look away.
On the fourth day, Serena’s body finally underwent a change.
Her skin all over her body started to become scorchingly hot, and a flush crept across her fair cheeks.
Sweat quickly beaded on her forehead, and the clear droplets flowed down her temples into her black hair.
But Serena lay there as if she had lost all sensation, motionless.
Lucas Shaw began to panic.
He held Serena, looking up helplessly, "Big brother, what’s wrong with Serena?"
Liam Shaw was also sweating with anxiety, he had never seen such a situation before and did not know how to respond.
But Serena’s vital signs were still present, and all her bodily functions were normal.
At this moment, Edward Selwyn suddenly stood up from the sofa and walked towards the bedside.
"I’ll take her pulse for a moment."
Liam Shaw immediately stepped back to give Edward Selwyn space.
Lucas Shaw, however, remained motionless while holding onto Serena, not even looking at Edward Selwyn.
Edward Selwyn ignored his cold demeanor, took hold of Serena’s wrist, and carefully felt her pulse.
"There are two forces colliding inside her body, causing some pulse confusion, but there shouldn’t be any big problem."
"But why hasn’t she woken up?" Lucas Shaw asked with concern.
"Just wait a bit longer; if she doesn’t wake up by tomorrow morning, then I’ll send someone to find my master," Edward Selwyn said, his expression grave as he looked at Serena.
Lucas Shaw’s heart suddenly rose to his throat.
When Serena awoke, she felt weak all over and dizzy, unable to exert any strength.
She moved slightly and felt her hand being tightly held. Instinctively, she turned her head and saw Lucas Shaw lying on the edge of the bed, eyes closed.
His tall frame was curled up by the bedside, and he looked very uncomfortable with his brows tightly furrowed.
Serena wanted to sit up but was worried about waking him.
"Serena, you’re awake?"
Liam Shaw returned from outside and was immediately overjoyed.
Edward Selwyn and Vincent Carter, hearing this, stood up from the sofa and walked to the bedside.
Lucas Shaw, who had been in a light sleep, awoke instantly upon hearing the news.
"Serena, you’re awake? Is there any discomfort?" He grasped Serena’s shoulders and pulled her firmly into his embrace.
During the days that Serena was comatose, he had experienced a profound sense of helplessness.
He wished he could suffer all the hardships for Serena Summers.
Serena could clearly feel his body trembling.
He was worried about her.
"Don’t worry, I’m fine now." Serena weakly raised her hand and patted Lucas Shaw’s back.
Edward Selwyn took Serena’s pulse and immediately felt relieved, "It’s alright now, the residual poison in her body has been completely cleared."
"It’s good that it’s fine, it’s good that it’s fine."
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief, their tense nerves gradually relaxed.
"Thank goodness, Serena’s poison has finally been cured!" Vincent Carter clenched his fists excitedly, unable to stop his eyes from reddening.
They had been waiting for this moment for over a decade.
Now, it had finally arrived.
"Honey."
"Uh-huh, I’m here, I’ve always been here."
"I’m hungry..." Serena said, embarrassingly rubbing her empty stomach.
She had been unconscious for so long that her stomach had long been growling.
Reluctantly letting go of Serena, Lucas Shaw gently stroked her cheek with his palm, "I’ll order some food right away."
"Big brother, have you recorded the data from the past few days?" Serena leaned against the headboard and looked toward Liam Shaw.
"I’ve recorded it. Take a good look." Lucas Shaw handed the data he had recorded to Serena.
Serena flipped through it and then nodded her head, "Big brother, thank you for helping me finish the final experiment data."
Helping Serena detoxify had always been her master’s greatest wish.
These things would serve as a reference for her master.
At this moment, suddenly an alarm sounded outside the door, and red lights flashed in the laboratory.
This unexpected situation startled everyone.
Liam Shaw did not yet know what was happening, when he heard Edward Selwyn say, "Not good, someone is attacking the laboratory’s security defense system."
Serena’s eyes sharpened, slightly squinted.
She lifted the quilt, forcing herself up from the bed.
Because of having not eaten for so long, her body felt weak, and she nearly fell to the ground when getting out of bed.
Fortunately, Lucas Shaw, who had finished his phone call, came back and supported her in time.
"What’s going on? Why aren’t you resting properly in bed?"
Bending over, Lucas Shaw lifted Serena by the waist, whispering comfortingly, "Don’t panic, I’ve already instructed Ethan Wells to assist them."
Ethan Wells was a top hacker in the country; the opponent should not be a problem for him.
With a fragile and pale face, Serena weakly leaned against Lucas Shaw and was lifted onto the bed by him.
"I’m alright. Why would someone suddenly attack the laboratory? This is my personal lab, I guess the attacker must be targeting me."
But Serena could not figure out who had such capability.
The firewalls and security defense systems she created were absolutely top-notch, not so easily breached.
But who would do such a thing?
Lucas Shaw stretched out his fingertip, gently touched Serena’s furrowed brow, and slowly smoothed it.
"Stop thinking about it, rest for a bit longer, the food will be delivered soon."
"Okay."
About ten or so minutes later, the alarm was lifted, and Ethan Wells stood outside the door holding a lunchbox.
Hearing the knock on the door, Lucas Shaw fixed the blanket for Serena and got up to open the door.
"My Lord, the laboratory’s protection system was not breached, but the attacker is also very strong; I did not track down their IP address."
