Chapter 36: She’s Awake

The sound over the phone looked like it belonged to the doctor. Once he was invited to the office, be. Became curious and somewhat concerned.

’Who could it be that wants to speak with him over the phone?’

Without further hesitation, he met the nurse over the counter and made her listen to the voice of the doctor who was speaking asking her to guide him to the doctor’s office.

Guided by the nurse, they moved down a quiet hallway to an office tucked near the emergency wing. The air inside as they stepped into the office, stirred from the air conditioner on the wall by the side was cool and calm, in sharp contrast to the storm brewing in Rino’s chest.

The doctor stood by his desk, with his phone in hand. His white coat was slightly creased, and his face was unreadable, somewhat professional.

"You are the one who brought the girl in?" although he already knew what the answer could be, the doctor still deemed it right to ask.

"Yeah," Rino replied quietly.

"Here." The doctor handed him the phone without a stretched explanation. "He wants to speak with you."

In Rino’s mind, his former self was amazed as to how Rino Carter now behaved because he found himself in a little trouble.

It was unlike his usual behavioral demeanor where he always held his shoulders high with confidence.

This is what conditions can cause for people, he thought.

Nothing letting his thoughts arouse suspicion among the individuals present in the office, he took the phone, a little confused.

"Hello?" he said into the receiver.

There was a pause.

Then, the nurse that had brought him in earlier left through the door, leaving the space for the doctor and Rino alone.

Then came a man’s voice that was deep, worn out and not supposedly calm.

"Good evening, sir. I’m Decko Dismin," the voice began, straightforward and polite. "I’m the father of the girl you brought in."

Rino’s chest tightened and loosened at the same time.

Being addressed with the title "sir", maybe because the man didn’t know how young whom he spoke to was.

Plus, he had expected to experience rage, threats and even, curses from the man. He would take it as normalcy since he was the defaulter. That would have been easier to respond to.

"I’m sorry," won’t be a deal. Or even, adding "very" before the sorry would not cause a sweat as well. What should matter was if it was said with enough remorse.

And, if Rino was to say that in his current condition, it would have been with much remorse.

But, none of what he expected came.

Instead, the man continued at a time that caught Rino completely off guard.

"I got a call from one of the residents around the area where everything happened. Guessing my daughter could be rushed to this nearest hospital since according to the description I got, the defaulter was capable of affording its cost, I called the doctor immediately."

Rino swallowed hard.

To think that the tall buildings laid across the lonely roads had it’s occupants observing what happened outside on the road, was—

"Sir, I’m truly sorry. I—I wasn’t paying attention. It’s all my fault," Rino apologized, sincerely.

Decko chuckled lightly, but there was no mockery in it. "It’s okay. What matters is that you didn’t abandon her. You took responsibility, and that’s rare in the society.

The line went silent for a second. Then, softly, the man added something that nearly made Rino freeze.

"I want you to please take care of my daughter for me. At least, for now."

Rino hadn’t expected some request of that sort. He still wanted to be very sure of what the man meant.

"What... what do you mean?" he asked calmly.

"I have work obligations that tie me across borders. I’m a Business Tech Analyst. I deal with secure frameworks for the Federal Government of and so, oversee projects that have me flying constantly—sometimes with no return date."

Rino leaned back in the chair where he sat. Was this the man’s plan? He sounded like he was taking a burden off his shoulder.

Meanwhile, having business deals with the Federal Government meant that man was no small person as well. He could easily hire a nanny for his child, but... wait oo, how about the girl’s mother?

The silence that followed Decko’s explanation was prolonged a little.

"I will return once I settle the urgent matters on my table," Decko said. "But please, while I’m away, make sure she’s cared for. You have my trust."

’You have my trust?’ The man didn’t know yet what Rino was capable of, yet he was already entrusting him.

’Urgent matters on his table?’ This was it. Every man has a problem.

There are those who wish to have the fruit of the womb to take care of, but they lack the means while some weren’t able to possess this fruit.

Now, there were those who got all they wanted—fruit of the womb, means to take care of them—and yet, they can’t provide the most important, care.

Already pitying the poor girl who was in sick bed, he nodded slowly even though the man couldn’t see him. "You have my word."

He wasn’t outrightly sure, but he wished he would be able to give the girl a befitting care.

"Thank you," Decko said, and the call ended.

That instant, Rino lowered the phone and sat in silence for a moment, staring into space. He wanted to rack the floor in wail for accepting this responsibility, but that would only soil his reputation.

His mind wandered between thoughts of the girl lying unconscious in the hospital bed and the name Decko Dismin, a man of high repute now trusting him with his daughter.

"Don’t she have a mother?" he asked no one in particular.

He returned the doctor’s phone to him and took out his own to check the time.

5:20 PM.

He cursed under his breath, suddenly remembering he had his next appointment.

He hoped everything he was supposed to do in the hospital would come to an end so that he wouldn’t miss the appointment with Zaria.

Still seated, he looked around the office before the doctor tapped gently on the table.

"You can return to the visitor’s lounge," the doctor said. "We’ll update you shortly."

Rino rose from the seat, nodding in understanding. But just as he reached for the door—

It flung open.

Another nurse burst in, eyes wide, breathing hard.

"Doctor!" she called, then turned to Rino.

At her gaze, Rino froze in sight.

The tension she had aroused with the way she bumped into the office was—

What could be her reason?

Was she in the office because of the patient he had brought in?

His thoughts weren’t at rest. They kept telling each other.

"She’s awake. The girl. She’s awake!"

Is that the reason she entered the room in that way?

Rino, however, felt at ease now. Slowly, he turned to the doctor and found that he was also very happy. Unusually happy.

What was all this about?

"Can I see her?" Rino put everything aside and asked.

The doctor hesitated for a second, then nodded.

"Yes. Let’s go."
