Chapter 35: Accident...

Rino hopped into his car and relaxed his back in the plush seat of his limousine, finally feeling like he could breathe as he inhaled fresh air.

He had just finished an important business at the tower before him, Nova Nexus Tower, and even though his mind still reeled with thoughts from the meeting, he felt a sense of relief.

He started the car and drove it along the road that led to the Carter’s Mansion.

He had some time left before his appointment with Zaria. So, he thought it best to stop by the mansion and have some rest and at least, allow his mind to calm itself before the next meeting.

With a quick press of a button, he changed the silence in the car to a lively zone by putting smooth music that filled the car.

🎵 Suicide by _Tippest_ 🎶

The soft beat of the music matched his mood as he nodded his head to the rhythm, singing in resonance with the lyrics of the song.

🎵 "Everything has its own time."

"Never misplaced business with fun time." 🎶

He was enjoying the moment, swiftly drifting where he was supposed to, hurling the car to its supposed direction whenever they approached any turn.

Even though he seemed to be careful with his driving, he least expected things would turn out as they just did.

Now, he understood the saying that the "Tomorrow is Pregnant" and so, no one actually knows its occurrences.

There might be predictions, but at times, there can be unexpected events.

Just like the one that had happened.

Out of nowhere, he was distracted by a bang on his car bonnet.

Thud!

The sound was loud and sudden.

His heart skipped a beat. He slammed his foot on the brake of his car, and the link came to a sharp, jerking stop.

"What the hell was that?" he muttered, reducing the music he played and jumping out of the car.

What he saw next made his blood run cold.

He had come out of the car to examine his car’s bonnet, only to find a girl lying on the ground in front of the car.

She lay still and was not moving.

Her appearance hinted that she was a teenager, maybe sixteen years old. Strapped to her back, she had her school bad and was dressed simply like any regular girl heading home from school.

For a moment, Rino didn’t flinch. He froze. Then, his instincts kicked in and yelled at him to do what he was supposed to.

You will keep standing over your mess?!

Without wasting any time, he ran towards the girl and dropped to his knees beside her.

"Hey! Are you okay? Can you hear me?" he asked with a shaky voice, shaking the girl’s body that was strapped on the door.

He got no response

Panic courses through the veins of his body.

The few people in the area who went for their own routines began to gather at the scene, but Rino wasn’t going to care.

He didn’t care.

He scooped the girl into his arms carefully, desperation replacing his earlier mood, and then, he rushed back to his limo.

He opened the back seat, laid the girl’s body on the empty cushion of the car, and dropped her belongings on the ground beside where she lay.

Without wasting another second, he pulled up the driver’s seat and drove with an unspoken speed, drifting his car around the roundabout that led him into one of the nearest elite hospitals in the country, and in that area.

TIMPTON hospital was one of the top hospitals which were believed to be made for the rich people alone since their cost for treatment was at its maximum.

The good thing about them well, was that they provided quality services and Rino always believed that "Healing should never be gotten cheap."

As soon as they arrived at that hospital, the nurses rushed to the car with a stretcher as if Rino had given them a call earlier.

The victim was quickly placed on a stretcher and rolled into the emergency room.

Rino followed closely behind them until they reached the entrance to the ward and stopped him.

"We have the visitors’ counter over there, sir," one of the nurses mentioned.

"We will take it from here," another nurse added gently.

Rino barely responded to what they said when a doctor, wearing his white robe with hands covered in gloves passed him into the room, closing the door behind himself.

He then turned and made his way to the counter as instructed, his hands still shaking but not noticeable.

When he got to the counter, he met the receptionist nurse who gave him a form to fill out. After he was done filling out the form, the nurse saw the space he had left and asked him questions.

"What’s your relationship with the girl?" the nurse asked.

"I’m not in any way related to her except the fact that she’s a human being just as I am. Look, I had hit her unconscious with my car, so, I don’t think—"

"Uhm, she will be alright?" Rino asked.

The nurse over the counter didn’t immediately respond to Rino. Instead, she gave him a stare while she filled in something on the empty spaces of the form that Rino hadn’t filled.

"Please, wait here," the nurse said and left with a folder in her hands.

Rino sat where he was asked to sit and wait, numb. His hands were clenched tightly on his lap, his head low.

And then the guilt set in.

It was his fault.

The road he traveled on had a zebra crossing. It was a clear road sign that told drivers to slow down for pedestrians.

But he hadn’t even noticed it. He had been vibing to the music he played to comfort himself.

And at the same time, his mind was elsewhere.

He closed his eyes, his heart heavy.

"Why didn’t I pay attention?"

He didn’t know who she was. He didn’t know if her parents were nearby, if someone was looking for her, or even if she would survive.

Thinking of the last worry, he flipped his fingers in a click sound over his head muttering "God forbid".

All he could do now was pray.

"God... please. Let her be okay. Don’t let her die. I didn’t mean for this to happen..."

He felt helpless. He wasn’t used to this feeling. Rino was a man of power, control, and confidence. But sitting there, he felt small.

Just then, his phone rang.

He looked down. It was an unknown number.

With a deep breath, he picked it up.

"Hello?" he said.

There was a brief pause. Then a serious voice came through the line.

"You’re the man who brought a girl in, right?"

Rino sat up straighter.

"Yes... yes, that’s me."

"Come to the office right away. You’ve got a call," the man sounding like the doctor said over the phone.
