Chapter 660: Love Above All Chapter 19: Believe It or Not, I’ve Called for Someone

What kind of biological father would wish for his own daughter’s death?

Gu Hua only cared about money, not life! If it weren’t for the inheritance document kept with the lawyer, the Gu family’s financial empire wouldn’t have a standing place for Gu Xiaoxi.

No wonder Gu Xiaoxi wanted to fulfill her mother’s last wish, to take over the property left by Jiang Li and formally challenge her father.

Gu Xiaoxi came downstairs in pajamas, where Gu Hua and Tian Mei were speaking to Bai Yaxuan in the living room.

Gu Yuxin sat upright, emanating the air of a well-bred lady, occasionally glancing at Bai Yaxuan with a shy expression on her face.

"Cough, cough!" Gu Xiaoxi covered her lips, the wind from descending the stairs made her cough due to her cold.

When Bai Yaxuan saw her, he instinctively stood up and walked over to support her, "You shouldn’t push yourself when you’re not feeling well!"

"I’m not that delicate!" Gu Xiaoxi rolled her eyes.

"Not delicate, but you got sick," Bai Yaxuan said helplessly, asking a servant to bring over a glass of hot water and also turned on the room’s heating.

Anyone could see that Bai Yaxuan’s care for Gu Xiaoxi was not simple kindness, but meticulous and attentive.

This caused the three people present to change their expressions, originally thinking that Bai Yaxuan married Gu Xiaoxi foreseeing the will for the Gu family’s wealth. But now it seemed not the case.

"Xiao Xi, Dad heard you were sick and brought you some tonics," Gu Hua quickly stood up, a warm smile on his face.

Gu Xiaoxi saw the ginseng and donkey-hide gelatin among other top-grade supplements on the table and sat down on the couch with Bai Yaxuan.

"Dad has been considerate, but I think my sister looks pale than I am, she probably needs to replenish more than me. From now on, Dad should refrain from sending things here, after all, we lack nothing in this mansion," Gu Xiaoxi finished, accepting a glass of hot water from Bai Yaxuan, who then touched her pale forehead.

Thankful there was no fever, she knew her constitution was indeed weak, especially since she had fallen into the cold sea water.

If not for her quick wits, she might have already lost her life.

"Xiao Xi, we know the mansion lacks nothing, this is your father’s caring thought, can’t you appreciate your father’s worries?" Tian Mei’s face was tense, but she didn’t dare show her anger openly. Her tone carried a slight reprimand.

Gu Xiaoxi’s lips curled into a cold smile, her gaze firm as she looked at Gu Hua, "I’m sick thanks to my dear father, so why bother bringing these pretentious gifts. Isn’t that right, Dad?"

Gu Hua felt a tightness in his chest, realizing Gu Xiaoxi was convinced he meant her harm. Everything he had done was covert; there was no evidence to be found, and he certainly wouldn’t admit to it now.

"What are you saying, girl? You are your father’s darling. I gave you the majority of the company’s shares as dowry during your wedding, how could you falsely accuse me like this?" Gu Hua frowned, feeling somewhat panicked, yet he dared not be too sharp in his words.

Bai Yaxuan had remained silent, and it was unclear how much he knew or whether he harbored any suspicions about him.

"That’s right, sister, since you’ve recovered, you’ve been quite irritable. Dad’s been very worried about you," Gu Yuxin chimed in on the side, chidingly, though her eyes kept stealing glances at Bai Yaxuan. It was clear she was hinting that Gu Xiaoxi was becoming unreasonable.

Gu Xiaoxi couldn’t help but admire her family’s ability to twist the truth and shift blame, not shedding a tear until seeing the coffin.

"Dad, actually I’m quite alright. Now that the shares have been divided, please deposit my dividends into my card. Starting next month, I’m going to work at the company. You can decide on a position for me," Gu Xiaoxi said indifferently, sipping her tea smoothly.

Gu Hua and Tian Mei were shocked, grinding their teeth with anger.

"My lawyer has already calculated all the accounts, so don’t even think about denying it. This is the dowry left by Mom, Dad, you wouldn’t embezzle it, would you?" Gu Xiaoxi blinked her innocent large eyes, looking pure and lovable.

Bai Yaxuan looked at Gu Hua coolly, and at that moment, he didn’t dare to speak rashly, "Of course, what’s yours will not be shortchanged by Dad."

"That’s good to hear, I can rest assured now," Gu Xiaoxi said nonchalantly, continuing to drink her tea.

Bai Yaxuan watched her, cautioning, "Take it slow, be careful not to burn yourself."

Gu Xiaoxi was speechless; this guy was more and more like a nanny!

Gu Hua and Tian Mei exchanged glances, seeing the intimate affection between the young couple; they naturally did not dare to overstay.

"Seeing you’re alright, Dad feels relieved. Xiao Xi, take good care of yourself and get well, Dad won’t disturb you any further," said Gu Hua, ready to leave.

Gu Yuxin suddenly stood up, looking at Gu Xiaoxi with feigned concern, her voice sultry, "Sister, you’re not well, let me stay to take care of you, shall I?"

Bai Yaxuan knew all too well this person had ill intentions, he was about to refuse when Gu Xiaoxi agreed, "Alright, it’s rare for sister to care so much about me. Dad, let her stay."

Gu Yuxin’s gaze stealthily swept over Bai Yaxuan, her heart full of mockery. She wasn’t staying to take care of Gu Xiaoxi, but for her brother-in-law.

Someday, she would drive Gu Xiaoxi out of the Presidential Mansion—the position of the lady of the house should have been hers in the first place.

"Mr. Gu, please wait a bit longer, I have something to discuss with you," Bai Yaxuan said gently glancing at Gu Xiaoxi, "You should obediently go back to your room to rest, I’ll take you there now."

Gu Xiaoxi pouted, this guy was too nosy. But with outsiders present, she didn’t want Gu Hua to detect anything amiss between the two of them.

After Bai Yaxuan escorted Gu Xiaoxi back to her room, Gu Hua had already gone to wait in the study.

Since Gu Yuxin wanted to stay to take care of her, she would surely give her a proper chance to do so.

"Qiao Wan, go tell Gu Yuxin to make me some snacks for the afternoon, I’m feeling a bit hungry now," Gu Xiaoxi commanded, and before long Qiao Wan returned with a beaming smile.

"Miss, the second young lady has never set foot in the kitchen since she was little. Asking her to cook, the look on her face was priceless. At home, she always bullied you. Every time Mr. Bai sent something nice, she snatched it away," Qiao Wan hadn’t forgotten those past events. They, the servants, observed everything but dared not intervene.

Things were different now; having come to the Presidential Mansion with Gu Xiaoxi, she didn’t have to consider Gu Yuxin’s feelings anymore.

"Go instruct them again for me, remember, I want to eat lobster, crab, and make sure she prepares them with her own hands. If they’re not tasty, she might as well return to the Gu Family early. I don’t need useless people to take care of me," Gu Xiaoxi said, lying in bed flipping through a book on business management.

Since she was going to work, learning was now more urgent than ever.

If she hadn’t guessed wrong, Bai Yaxuan had sought Gu Hua’s company surely because of Mi Xi.

If nothing unexpected happened, Mi Xi should be able to come back in the afternoon.

By then, she would ask about the full story.

No sooner had Qiao Wan left than the door to the room sounded.

Gu Xiaoxi thought Bai Yaxuan had settled matters so swiftly and hurriedly raised her head to look at the door.

Much to her surprise, the person entering wasn’t Bai Yaxuan, but Quan Shaoqing.

"How come you’re here?" Gu Xiaoxi’s hands, shocked, clutched the book—this was the heavily guarded Presidential Mansion, after all.

"Seeing me here, are you nervous?" Quan Shaoqing glanced around the room, closed the door, and even locked it.

"Were you invited in or..." Gu Xiaoxi genuinely suspected that the guy had scaled a wall and stealthily entered, which didn’t seem to fit his status.

"Does it matter how I got in?" Quan Shaoqing, dressed in a black suit, his dark eyes inscrutable.

Gu Xiaoxi set down the book in her hands, curiosity apparent on her face, "Were you invited by Bai Yaxuan?"

Quan Shaoqing, with his long legs, approached Gu Xiaoxi, reaching out to touch her forehead—it was no longer hot with fever.

Gu Xiaoxi swatted his hand away, "This is my room, you can’t just waltz in here."

Although she hadn’t intentionally looked into Quan Shaoqing’s background, she could guess that he and Bai Yaxuan were not allies.

And it was unlikely that he was invited by Bai Yaxuan, otherwise, he wouldn’t have snuck into her room like this.

"I came to see if you had recovered from your illness, but it seems you are quite comfortable here. This double bed must be very cozy," he said nonchalantly, patting her forehead.

Gu Xiaoxi raised her hand to push away his restless hand, slightly angered, "You trespass into the Presidential Mansion and have the audacity to think you’re in the right."

"Didn’t I see how reluctant you were when I left last time? So as soon as I finished my business, I came to check on you," Quan Shaoqing made himself at home, squeezing beside her, a look of concern on his face.

Gu Xiaoxi’s heartbeat raced as she shifted aside, feeling that being too close to him muddled her thoughts even further.

"Who’s reluctant about you! I am now a married woman, please leave immediately," Gu Xiaoxi worried inwardly that if Bai Yaxuan encountered him, he could be caught for breaking and entering as a criminal.

"Is that really the case?" Quan Shaoqing sat beside her, tilting her chin with his hand, his voice mischievously intent on her.

Gu Xiaoxi shoved him, this man really had some nerve. "Believe it or not, I’ll call for someone."
