Chapter 103: Chapter 36 This is Simply an Accident
Quan Shaoqing cleared his throat calmly and walked forward. Seeing her face drenched in sweat, he took out a handkerchief from his pocket and gently wiped her forehead.
Gu Xiaoxi stood there, breathing lightly. She had just arrived too, and the journey had exhausted her.
His hands were gentle, the handkerchief sweeping across her forehead, drying the sweat on her face.
She stood there with a cold expression, while he, with his tall and robust figure and noble, cold demeanor, made her feel somewhat oppressed, and the atmosphere suddenly became indescribably weird.
Especially since her sensitive ears, despite the distance, could actually pick up his heartbeat, loud and clear like a drum.
She inexplicably felt her own heartbeat quicken, and a blush crept up her cheeks.
Feeling uncomfortable, she reached out and pushed away his handkerchief, asking again, "Why are you back so late? Where have you been?"
Quan Shaoqing turned to open the door, since he had no intention of telling her what he had been doing anyway.
Just as he opened the door and was about to step inside, the door next to his opened.
Lin Mi, with sleepy eyes, poked her head out of the door and asked Quan Shaoqing, "Superior officer, did your matchmaking go smoothly today? I booked a hotel for you, did you sleep well, Miss Lu..."
Creak!
Lin Mi suddenly widened her eyes in shock upon discovering Gu Xiaoxi standing behind Quan Shaoqing, covering her mouth with her hand as the rest of her words choked in her throat.
Gu Xiaoxi stared at Quan Shaoqing, her gaze frosty and expressionless.
Quan Shaoqing glared at Lin Mi, wishing he could smash that mouth of his. What nonsense was he spouting in the middle of the night?
What hotel booking?
He hadn’t even gone but had come straight back.
Lin Mi, frightened, immediately shrank back and quickly shut her door, leaning against it and feeling a desire to die.
Gu Xiaoxi touched her nose, pushed open the door to her house, and strode in.
She truly was drenched in sweat, her hair soaked through.
She didn’t have time to deal with Quan Shaoqing and decided to take a shower first.
Quan Shaoqing was quick and had already started cooking two steaks in the kitchen.
Both of them ate in silence, with Gu Xiaoxi sitting at the dining table without wolfing down her food, yet not consuming it with particular grace either.
Quan Shaoqing watched her emotionless face, unsure how much she cared about what had just transpired.
Gu Xiaoxi remained silent.
He felt as if he had been caught stealing sugar, like a child who had done wrong, except he hadn’t even had the pleasure of enjoying the sugar before being found out.
"A glass of red wine," Gu Xiaoxi said.
Quan Shaoqing stared at her fair and serene face, turning to get the red wine.
It seemed both were too composed, neither saying a word, the dining room filled only with the sound of cutlery and porcelain clinking.
The atmosphere was pervaded with a strange tension, and even they couldn’t clearly articulate what was wrong.
As Quan Shaoqing sat there, he felt a chill down his spine and couldn’t help but look at Gu Xiaoxi and explain, "The matchmaking was arranged by my mother. I didn’t stay at the hotel but drove back by myself, which is why it’s late."
Gu Xiaoxi, cutting her steak, looked up at him, her large eyes filled with disbelief, "Why are you explaining your matchmaking to me? I’m not your guardian. Last time you ruined my good fortune. This time I’m giving you a warning. You can like anyone you want, just not Zhang Jingyue. Otherwise, we’ll terminate our guardianship relationship."
Quan Shaoqing was baffled and surprised, asking, "Who is Zhang Jingyue?"
"The granddaughter of a high-ranking minister, perfectly matched in social status with you, who also enlisted just for you," Gu Xiaoxi said coldly, biting into the beef with particular force.
To Quan Shaoqing, her expression appeared to be one of grinding her teeth in anger.
"Now that you mention it, I recall her. The one in your unit. Her grandfather did indeed mention her to me, asking me to look after her. Next month, she’s supposed to start working as a civilian in the headquarters," Quan Shaoqing said.
At his words, Gu Xiaoxi’s grip on the fork paused. So what Zhang Jingyue had said was true. Given the high-ranking minister’s significance in the country, it was no wonder she was surrounded by "demons."
It was good that Zhang Jingyue would be leaving; it would save Gu Xiaoxi from irritation in the Fourth Company.
Seeing that Gu Xiaoxi remained silent, Quan Shaoqing felt uneasy, unsure of her thoughts.
"As you’ve said, I shouldn’t let her come. The army is a place for serving the country, not for romances," Quan Shaoqing said, making up his mind.
Gu Xiaoxi, expressionless, set down her knife and fork and picked up the red wine for a sip, her tone indifferent, "That’s your own business. But rest assured, I absolutely won’t tolerate her living under the same roof as me."
Quan Shaoqing coughed, a trace of happiness blossoming in his heart. Didn’t this mean that Gu Xiaoxi was, perhaps, subconsciously jealous?
The next second, Gu Xiaoxi stood up, pointed at the lipstick on the collar of his shirt, and said coolly, "As for your matchmaking with others, I have no opinion. However, please don’t bring home women’s lipstick. It’s an eyesore."
Quan Shaoqing immediately turned his head to examine the spot on his shirt that Gu Xiaoxi pointed at and indeed, there was a mark of lipstick...
His face suddenly darkened. How did it get there? After a moment’s thought...
This was a misunderstanding! It was purely an accident...
But Gu Xiaoxi was not interested in his explanation, walking briskly to her room, then with a loud slam, she shut the door.
It was already late; she needed to catch some sleep quickly to make it back by six in the morning.
She lay in bed unable to sleep, especially when thoughts of Quan Shaoqing inexplicably fueled her anger.
Ever since she met him, her life had been completely disrupted. If he were to get married in the future, maybe she would become the redundant one in this family.
Her own biological parents didn’t want her, let alone Quan Shaoqing, whom she had met by chance.
