Chapter 31: Tasty Pasta.

"Mom! We’re back." Beth called, slamming the door behind her as she walked, taking off her boots.

"I’m in the kitchen, Honey." Jen called, straightening out the plates on the dining table.

"Mmm, what you cooking?" Raymond asked softly into her neck, hugging her from behind.

"I’m already done cooking, and I made pasta." Jen replied giggling a little, as she leaned into him.

Beth gave them a weird look, making gagging sound.

"Oh please, you’ve done worse." Jen teased as Raymond released her.

"I haven’t." She argued, already going to sit by the table, her intestines twisting with hunger.

"No, nop. No food until you’ve both cleaned up." Jen said, pulling Beth’s seat backward.

"But-" Beth tried to complain.

"You guys stink. A lot." Jen informed them, her arm pointing to the staircase, as if pointing them to follow that way.

"I’m not stinky." Raymond defended, sniffing his armpit.

"Yeah, and I’m the Luna." Jen deadpanned.

"C’mon, Baby. We are exhausted. Please, just let us eat." Raymond pleaded, reaching for her hand.

"Fine." Jen said giving in, but took her hand away from Raymond’s reach.

"Thanks, Mommy." Beth chirped, already scooping a portion for herself.

"Bethany! We haven’t prayed!"

"Oops." She muttered, her hand hanging in the air.

"Put down that spoon, young lady." Jen instructed, her hands on her hips, her face stern.

"Yes, ma’am." Beth obliged, putting down the serving spoon.

"Now, say the grace." Jen instructed, taking her seat.

After saying the grace, Jen shared out portions, all of them digging into their meals.

"So, Baby. Did you see any of them today?" Jen asked, cutting her meat to smaller chunks.

"Uhh..yeah. I did. I met Troy with Dad, when we had just come into the pack house, and Theo, he came around the kitchen." Beth replied, putting a fork of pasta into her mouth.

"Okay." Jen said softly, putting her cutlery down. "How did it go?"

"Go? We just spoke briefly, that’s all." Beth said with food in her mouth, shrugging.

"Yeah, that’s true. I heard there was a situation in the kitchen. Was that were you saw him?" Raymond asked.

"Situation? What situation?" Jen asked, utterly confused and a bit afraid.

"Nothing much, Mum. Just a little squabble between I and the women. But it ended well, I put them in their place. And yes, that’s were I saw him, he was standing by the door." Beth explained.

"Did he say anything?" Jen asked.

"Anything like?" Beth asked, abit confused.

"About the squabble, did he do anything to them?" Jen asked again.

"Anything to who? He just commended me for handling it properly." Beth tried to explain again.

"To the women. Men can be really protective and psychotic whenever their mates are threatened, especially Alphas." Jen explained.

"Oh. Uhh.. He didn’t do anything to them. He just stood behind the small crowd that had gathered by the door, watching our squabble. When we were done, he asked to see me outside and we spoke on the balcony."

"Okay then. That’s good. Then you did good, love. I’m proud of you." Jen said.

"Thank you, Mom." Beth said, smiling a little, before going to back to her meal.

"Did you speak to him about the Heat?" Raymond chimed, giving her a look, cause he knew she didn’t.

"Heat?" Jen asked immediately. "You asked her to speak to them about it?" She asked her mate.

"Yeah, I did. Since they aren’t going public yet, it would be wise for her to be in their house in the city during her heat. She’s young and it’s her first time. It will be intense." He explained.

"That’s true." Jen said, nodding in understanding.

"I forgot to tell him. I was still pumped by the argument, it didn’t cross my mind." Beth said. "I can call them later tonight."

"Can you do that? You can call them tomorrow. It’s past 11 already." Jen suggested.

"I’d call them today. Dad said it’s not that far. So the earlier the better."

"Okay then. But how was work, though? I’m quite surprised you didn’t beat up any of the women." Jen said, smiling a little.

"Oh, I almost did. Honestly. They were on my necks. Blabbing on how much of an illiterate I am for not going to college, amongst other things. They were so infuriating! How I stood there, absorbing everything and still constructing appropriate responses for each of them is beyond me." Beth said , sighing.

"You really did good. I wasn’t so sure putting you there, but I had to trust you. Maybe having Theodore stand beside you helped." Raymond teased.

"Oh please. I had it perfectly handled before he came around. Besides, I’ve had worse things said about me. It’s just, this one took me off guard. I’ve always known they didn’t like me, but I’d never imagined they’d go as far as insulting me to my face, just because, for some reason they were threatened by my presence, whereas I wasn’t imposing on their business, at all." Beth explained.

"Well, Bunny. I told you. You’ve got this aura that cannot go unseen. It commands respect and fear. They couldn’t help but feel threatened. But I’d make them pay for calling you an illiterate." Raymond said, taking a sip of his juice.

"No. You don’t have to. Like you said, they couldn’t help it." Beth tried to defend.

"No, baby. All of the women that work there are mothers with no less than two children each. They shouldn’t and cannot speak to someone else’s child in that manner. It’s inappropriate." Raymond explained.

"But, Dad-"

"His correct, love. They are expecting it, trust me. And if he doesn’t punish them, they wouldn’t respect him." Jen explained softly, her palm over Beth’s.

"Okay." She said slouching.

"Now, eat up. It’s getting late. I know you’d want to train in the morning." Jen said, patting her softly before leaving her seat.

_____________

Tristan sat behind his desk, his head buried in documents when his phone rang. Without looking at the ID, he picked.

"Tristan speaking." He said, automatically, his eyes still fixated on the documents.

"Hi, Tristan. It’s Bethany."

He immediately sat erect in his seat, his eyes finally leaving the documents as soon as he heard her voice.

"Bethany? Is everything alright?" He asked, his voice laced with concern, as he checked his wristwatch for the time.

"Everything is okay, Tristan. I just wanted to speak to you about something. Were you asleep?" She asked softly, from the other side of the line.

He sighed softly in relief, leaning into his seat, the tension on his shoulders and neck reducing quickly.

"No, I was awake. Had to go over some documents. How are you doing?" He asked, his eyes closed as he pictured her face in his mind.

"I’m fine. Had a long day. You?"

"I’m tired. Not too tired, but I’d be okay. Theo told us there was a bit of commotion at your station. Are you good?" He asked.

"I’m good. It’s been handled. How are they?"

"Okay, I guess. They should be in their rooms."

"Okay, then."

"Yes, love. So.. what was it you wanted to talk about?" He asked.

"Okay, umm." Swallowing, she continued. "It’s not exactly... It doesn’t exactly..Shit." He heard her curse on the other side. She was a stuttering mess.

"I sense it’s not exactly something you can say?" He asked calmly, hoping it was going to make their conversation a bit easier.

"Well, yes. I guess. I can say it, it’s just, I don’t know why I’m stuttering." She tried to explain, causing Tristan to laugh softly. He couldn’t help but imagine her cheeks that he could bet were crimson red at that moment.

"You can text it." He suggested.

"Nop. That would be childish." She said, cursing at herself.

"I don’t mind." Tristan said, shrugging like she could see it.

"I do." She said strongly. "You know what, can we meet up? I can come meet you." She offered.

"Okay. That can be arranged. But I’d come to you instead. It’s past twelve." He reasoned.

"Yeah, and? I’m not a damsel, remember?"

"You’re my damsel, and I’m coming to meet you. Besides, they boys would literally kill me for letting you come by this time." He explained.

"Urgh.." She groaned. "Fine."

"Good. So I’d be at your front yard in ten minutes." Tristan said, already, getting up from his seat.

"Okay, then. I’d bring cookies." She said before she could register, pinching herself hard for doing so.

"Please do, I think I’m starving." He said, smiling a bit.

"If you’re starving, I’d warm some leftover pasta for you then. Would you be interested? Mom made it." She offered again, without thinking, her nails digging harder into her thigh.

"Oh, I am. Thank you." He said, searching for his keys.

"Yeah, yeah." She said dryly. "See you soon." And she cut.

Smiling, he put down his phone, swearing to chop of Troy’s balls if he had taken his keys with him. Luckily, he found it stuffed inside the couch, like it had been sat on.

"Son of a bitch." He cursed. Taking his jacket, he took one last look at the documents that had been bothering him since that evening, before leaving the room.

He’d attend to it later. He couldn’t let his tasty pasta couldn’t go cold.
