“The winters in Cakago are very cold, this is your first winter here, be prepared. It snows in the winter here, and if there’s a chance, I can take you skiing,” Yukon said.
“That sounds great, the University of Cakago has a winter camp activity during the winter season, if you’re free, you could join,” Jasmine said, “It’s around the time final exams are over.”
“I know, I’ve participated before, it’s pretty interesting.”
“It’s getting late, I should head home, should I not come to see you off tomorrow morning? Actually, I really wanted to…”
Jasmine looked at him, the man’s face always wore a gentle smile, like a spring breeze caressing willows.
Especially in the night light, it added to his brightness and handsomeness.
Meeting him was an accident.
“Classes are important,” Yukon insisted she shouldn’t see him off, “After finishing the coffee, I’ll take you home.”
“Okay.”
Jasmine’s face was filled with a pleased smile, her eyes as bright as stars, dazzling.
The bakery was close to her apartment, and she and Yukon walked back.
The night was not too cold, Jasmine had her hands stuffed in her coat pockets, walking slowly.
Before leaving, Yukon gave her a gift, a ginger yellow knitted scarf.
She happened to not be wearing a scarf when she went out that evening, so Yukon tied it around her for her.
“Mr. Carbon, thank you,” Jasmine said, feeling much warmer.
Even as she walked through the wind, she couldn’t feel the cold.
Jasmine pulled the scarf up, letting it cover half of her face, leaving only a pair of bright eyes exposed.
“I thought you wouldn’t accept it, if you didn’t, I would feel uneasy accepting your gifts as well,” Yukon said with a smile, “I bought it on a whim a few days ago while at the mall, I thought the color suited your skin and winter is coming, one needs a few scarves.”
Jasmine felt the scarf was very warm, she liked this gift a lot.
She walked side by side with him to the edge of the street, the street light elongating their shadows.
The wind blew the leaves which fluttered down to their feet.
There were other pedestrians taking walks on the road, the night streets void of the day’s clamor.
Jasmine and Yukon chatted casually, Yukon was not a very silent person, he could keep up with anything Jasmine said.
But most of the time, it was Jasmine who spoke.
Walking along, they arrived at the apartment building where she lived.
“Mr. Carbon, I’m going up now, you should head back, it’s cold outside,” Jasmine reminded him, “Make sure you remember to take everything with you, I won’t come to the airport to see you off tomorrow.”
“Okay, see you next time,” Yukon nodded, his complexion steady, “Go on up!”
Jasmine waved at him, “Goodbye, thank you for the scarf.”
Yukon smiled, his eyes curving into crescents.
He watched her step by step until she reached the staircase, until she went upstairs.
The light on the eighth floor turned on quickly, and the street light stretched Yukon’s shadow very long.
He stood downstairs, lighting a cigarette, looking up at the lights above.
Smoke wreathed around his face, his eyes deep and profound.
Before long, the window upstairs opened, and Jasmine poked her head out from above.
Seeing that Yukon was still there, she waved again, “Go home.”
Yukon couldn’t hear her, but he also raised his hand, making a ‘goodbye’ gesture toward her.
The cigarette in his fingers burned down little by little, the glow of the tip flickering in the dark night.
The night, deep as water.
