Chapter 72

~Spring’s POV~

When I stepped out of the shower, steam curled around the mirror, hiding my reflection for a few seconds. I wiped a circle clean with my palm and stared at myself.

My eyes were tired, and my shoulders were stiff, but I looked stronger.

After towel-drying my hair and using the hand dryer, I slipped into the robe I saved for rare occasions and opened the large box we had bought from the boutique yesterday, sitting beside my vanity.

The gown inside shimmered softly. People whispered it was beautiful at the boutique, and now, staring at it under the soft bedroom lights, I just couldn’t agree more.

I slipped it on and zipped up the side, smoothing the fabric over my waist. It hugged my figure in all the right places, modestly but elegantly, and when I turned slightly, it shimmered with each movement like falling dusk.

I smiled at my reflection and adjusted a curl of hair behind my ear.

"Spring Kaine, you are beauti..." A knock sounded on my door, and my heart jumped. I wasn’t expecting anyone.

Before I could say anything, the door opened just a little enough for Kaius to peek in.

My breath hitched as he stepped in fully, dressed in a deep burgundy dress shirt, sleeves rolled to his elbows, and black trousers that fit too well for my brain to process.

His eyes scanned me once, then twice.

"Wow..." he breathed. "You look... absolutely stunning."

My cheeks must have been flushed thanks to the heat on them because there was no teasing in his tone, just pure honesty.

I smiled softly. "Thanks. But I’m not done yet."

"Right," he said with a small smirk, and then raised the box he’d been holding.

It was small, black, and lined with velvet. My gaze locked on it immediately.

"What’s that?" I asked softly, not sure if my voice would betray my excitement. I mean, it was almost hard not to want to be babied when around my older brothers.

One, cause it was fun, and secondly, it felt nice being doted on rather than Rose and the pure look of envy in her eyes... priceless.

Kaius walked closer and opened it slowly. Inside, nestled in midnight blue satin, was a necklace unlike any I have seen, a single-cut blue jade pendant, framed in silver, dangling from a thin but sturdy chain that glinted under the room’s soft light.

My breath caught in my throat.

"I saw it in a shop months ago," Kaius said, watching my reaction carefully. "And I knew it had to be yours. I kept it until... well, until you’d be ready to wear it."

I didn’t answer because he had me there.... Months ago?

Even then, they had not been kind to me, but still, he got it for me?

My throat tightened at the sight of it. It was a blue jade and Spring’s colour.

He lifted it out and stepped behind me.

"May I?"

I nodded slowly.

Kaius did not say anything anymore and fastened it around my neck, the pendant settling perfectly against my collarbone like it had always belonged there.

When I looked up at the mirror again, the girl staring back looked different, softer, but also, somehow, more complete.

Kaius leaned close and whispered in my ear. "Happy birthday, Spring."

I turned around, lips parted to say something—anything—but no words came out.

So instead, I smiled. "Thanks."

Kaius nodded. "Quick, and put on your heels."

I nodded and went to get one of my old pairs of shoes.

Just as I was about to wear them, I noticed Kaius’s somewhat sad and pouting expression on his face.

I followed his line of sight, looking at the black heels. "Huh, it doesn’t fit?"

He tried not to speak, but when I kept looking at him, he finally voiced his worry.

"I wonder why you are not wearing the silver heels I got you for your birthday. It would suit these clothes well. So is it because you are still angry with me or...?"

"Angry at you?" Confusion flickered across my face at what he said.

Sensing it, Kaius narrowed his eyes on me as though he could tell whether or not I was lying.

Then he asked, "Spring, where are the gifts I sent you?"

"I..."

"Have you opened them yet?"

I nodded without thinking, and then I paused. "Umm, not all."

"Where’s the one in a purple box?"

I bit my lower lip a bit as I tried to recall, and then I saw the box peeking at me. "Oh, there!"

Kaius followed my line of sight to where the box lay quietly in the room and shook his head.

It still had its wrappings. Quickly, I reached for it, unwrapped it, and opened it.

I knew it must have been beautiful for Kaius to get it for me, but opening it first-hand and seeing it... Nothing prepared me for that.

The silver heels featured blue jade-like gems that adorned the straps, making them look refreshing.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. "Quick, put it on. I’ve been waiting to see you on it," Kaius urged, his voice breaking me from my train of thought.

I nodded and sat down on my bed while he quickly got on one knee, raised my right foot, dusted it first, and gently slid the shoe on.

It felt like the fairytale books Spring had read as a child, and I couldn’t help but hold my breath all through the process.

Thankfully, they were my brothers, so there was no fluttering of the heart, just giddy feelings I got from my past with R...ael.

I did not know I had a downcast look on my face until Kaius’ question broke me from my train of thought.

"You don’t like it?"

"I... oh no. No. I love it. Absolutely," I corrected the misunderstanding as I withdrew my feet. "Thank you, big bro. Truly."

Kaius’ smile spread across his face as he gently stood up and held my hand to assist me.

As soon as I was on my feet, he twirled me a little, stopped, and took a bow. "Can I have this dance?"

My cheeks flushed instantly, and I nodded. It was... sigh... the little dance we had before he stopped and arranged my hair was lovely.

I did not feel like the birthday girl’s sister. I felt like the birthday girl herself.

"Come, let us bless the world with your beauty. Shall we go down?"

Forgetting Rose and her frustration, I nodded. "We shall."
