Fangless: The Alpha's Vampire Mate -
Chapter 99: A Shield Breaker
Chapter 99: A Shield Breaker
To her surprise, the power flowed smoothly. It was the most stable she had ever experienced. How come?
She turned around and saw Thorin behind her. The hand on her shoulder was his. He winced, seemingly struggling with something.
When the power of the Moon came into contact with the magical shield, the invisible barrier materialized into a thin, veiled layer.
The silvery, almost transparent aura emanating from Riona’s fingertip created a hole in the middle of the veil. The hole expanded as she moved her hand around. Once it was large enough for one person to pass through, Thorin pushed her.
Riona jumped through the hole, successfully escaping the prison. However, there was no time to celebrate, as some vampires began to regain consciousness, including Elder Alfred.
Her first instinct was to grab Florian. Then, she looked for Thorin, only to realize he was still inside the room.
"Thorin! Come out now! We must leave," she shouted.
Riona crouched slightly to nudge Puck and Zane. She narrowly avoided a blast of Elder Alfred’s golden power, ducking just in time. With no other choice, she used her leg to wake Sir Kai.
"Sorry, you know I didn’t mean to be rude, right? Come on, wake up!" she mumbled.
Riona gently set Florian down in the corner, away from the other unconscious bodies. She blocked Elder Alfred’s attacks. It was fortunate that his power was still weak from just waking up.
She took steps forward to check on Thorin, who collapsed on the floor, crawling toward the door. At the same time, she sent countless red arrows at the elder. Despite the haziness, he dodged them with ease.
"Thorin, what are you doing?!" Riona called out. But no matter how loudly she screamed, Thorin’s movements were minimal, if there were any at all.
Something was wrong with him. Riona clicked her tongue. She couldn’t carry someone with a huge build like Thorin.
Why did werewolves have to be giants? she cursed silently.
She momentarily forgot that even if Thorin were small and light, she wouldn’t be able to re-enter the chamber to get him without getting trapped again.
"Urgh!" Riona was hit on the shoulder. Her back slammed against the wall as she struggled to manage the searing pain.
"Puck! Zane! Sir Kai! Come on, someone wake up! Just wake up, sleepyheads!" In her frantic movements, Riona ended up kicking them in the face. "Oops!"
Sir Kai was the first to flinch. He opened his eyes and hastily tried to jump up, only to drop back down.
"This must be your first time being knocked out by an explosion. My advice as an experienced fainter: don’t make big moves right away. It will only worsen the dizziness," Riona said like a true expert that she was.
Once Sir Kai managed to clear his mind, Elder Alfred also regained his composure and full power. The situation was getting dangerous.
"Get Thorin out of there. I’ll distract that old geezer," Riona barked. "And don’t forget my brother! Make sure he’s safe."
Just as Riona ran down the corridor and exited from the west wing, Puck and Zane began to stir. Seeing a glimmer of hope, she disappeared around the corner, luring Elder Alfred to the open field of the courtyard.
Bodies of unconscious knights were scattered everywhere. Some of them had woken up, but not all were on the elder’s side. Most of them faced Elder Alfred. Their intentions were clear: they were determined to protect Riona from being killed.
"Your Excellency, please do not come closer," one knight warned, tightening his grip on his sword.
"How dare you order me around?!" Elder Alfred spat out, too dumbfounded to maintain his composure. A mere soldier dared to tell him what to do?!
"Lady Riona, please get behind us," another knight urged.
Riona was confused. Why would these knights help her? It didn’t make sense. All she knew was that they were neither Royal Guards nor allied with Elder Alfred. Perhaps she could use their help to escape.
The commotion in the corridor of her room reached Riona’s ears. It seemed that more people had regained consciousness. The battle must have reignited.
She wanted to check up on Florian and the werewolves, but she feared that doing so would lead the dangerous Elder Alfred to them.
The elder was incredibly strong. With one sweep of his hand, he could throw knights aside.
Riona had no one to shield her now. Her heart pounded as she wondered if she could win against an elder whose power had been honed for centuries. His long life was proof of the strength and dignity of his abilities.
They engaged in a fierce back-and-forth of attack and defense. Each tried to outsmart the other, but Riona was faster than the elder, mainly due to her youth. Elder Alfred moved slower, but his attacks were precise and powerful.
More knights woke up and joined the battle. Finally, the knights allied with Elder Alfred appeared, but Riona quickly shoved them to the sidelines.
"Stop that calamity before she destroys our home and family!" Elder Alfred shouted, exaggerating his fear to motivate his knights.
"What do you mean destroy your home and family? Why would I do that?" Riona whined, upset by the false accusation.
She had known it! Being a Blood Moon child was the most bothersome thing she had ever been forced to endure.
Angry at being hated for something she hadn’t done and wouldn’t do, Riona retorted, "That wrinkled fang is just afraid of me and my power. Right, old man? You’re scared of me."
Riona knew she shouldn’t have provoked an elder. No matter how pissed she was, making an already furious elder even more enraged was a mistake.
Because an uncontrolled elder was more than capable of trapping you in his bubble of power, much like Lisbeth had once done to Riona. As the golden bubble crept around her body, she realized she had no way to escape. She was trapped.
The slime-like substance locked her in place, so tight that she began to lose oxygen. Her lungs burned, and she was out of breath. The pain was excruciating, and she felt dizzy.
Is this how I’m going to die?
