Chapter 98: Not My Fault (This Time)
After the explosion, Riona was the first to get up. Perhaps it was because she had been thrown into the corner of the room right before the blast.
She recalled Thorin telling her that her identity as the Blood Moon child had already been exposed. Who were they that he referred to? It couldn’t be just King Valentin.
Riona staggered to her feet, pressing her temple to ease the dizziness. Everyone lay unconscious around her.
"Where is he...?" she murmured, wobbling toward the door.
She needed to find Florian. She hadn’t seen him since before the explosion, and he was usually by Thorin’s side. One might think Florian was a werewolf and Thorin his brother, given how inseparable they were.
"Flo...?" Riona called out weakly.
Once she got near the door, she saw Florian on the floor along with everyone else. It was dead silent. She became frantic seeing her brother in such a state.
"What the... what happened?" Riona tried to piece together the moments before the explosion.
Did she cause it? But she had just woken up from the overwhelming cold energy of the Moon. She would be too weak to unleash such a powerful blast.
Besides, she didn’t remember being angry enough to blow up the palace. Past explosions had always been triggered by intense fury or a strong will to destroy, leaving her unconscious.
This couldn’t be her doing. But if not her, then who else?
As Riona stared at the motionless Florian, she noticed something odd. The tips of his fingers were darkened, and parts of his skin looked like they were covered in fish scales.
It was a sight she knew well, having experienced the same symptoms when she first unleashed her power uncontrollably.
"Was it Flo?" Riona whispered in disbelief.
Had he finally tapped into his power? Without any training?
"Why are you standing there in a daze?" a familiar voice called out.
Riona snapped out of her reverie. The appearance of the ancestor brought back memories of that day. When he had tried to unlock her powers, he mentioned some kind of malfunction.
Could he have mistakenly opened Flo’s suppressed power instead of hers? Was it even possible for an ancestor to make such a grave error?
Squinting her eyes, Riona asked with suspicion, "Did you do this?"
"Do what?" The ancestor tried to feign ignorance, but his voice carried a hint of guilt.
Riona’s suspicions deepened. "Did you give Florian power?"
"Give him power? Of course not! I can’t give anyone powers! It’s always been his. He just blocked it due to some silly trauma."
Riona raised an eyebrow. "So, you unblocked that silly trauma?"
The ancestor fell silent.
Riona wasn’t upset about what the ancestor had done to Florian. If her brother became a strong vampire, it would make her happy. But what concerned her was what the sudden surge of power might do to him.
As the ancestor had said, Florian’s trauma had blocked his powers. Unblocking them might mean releasing the flow of that trauma, regardless of whether Florian was ready to face it.
There were cases where vampires went mad and killed themselves due to the sudden unblocking of their powers. It didn’t happen often, but it did happen.
Florian wasn’t the first vampire whose powers were suppressed due to unresolved emotions.
Riona had thought she was one of those vampires as well. She never imagined her suppressed powers stemmed from being a Blood Moon child.
"Er... I might have made a small—just a teeny tiny mistake," the ancestor admitted quietly, trying to defend himself timidly.
"Great. Now I have to clean up an ancestor’s mess too. No wonder you’re outcasted by the other ancestors. Keep causing trouble like this, and you’ll find yourself stripped of your title soon," Riona grumbled in annoyance.
While the ancestor had helped her in some ways, he had also brought more tasks. Riona didn’t know whether to thank him or berate him.
He stammered, "B-but... it was my first time. I had only heard about it in passing. Ugh, I should have paid more attention during the briefing sessions."
The ancestor suddenly raised his voice as if he had been scolding Riona all along.
"This is a lesson for you too! You should never doze off during classes. You never know when something will be useful in your life."
Annoyed by the sudden shift, Riona snapped, "Alright. Enough about that!"
She extended her finger to test the magic shield, and a jolt of electricity surged through her. She quickly retracted her hand; the spell was still active.
"What should I do about this?" Riona put her hand on her hip, acting like an adult addressing a child.
"What else? Use the fire of the Moon power to break the spell," the ancestor replied nonchalantly.
She rolled her eyes, mocking the ancestor for his seemingly silly suggestion. "Duh! Have you forgotten? I lost consciousness when you unblocked my power. How am I supposed to use it if I end up fainting every time?"
"Take control of it! The power of the Moon is like a sandstorm. Despite being a storm, it’s still just sand. You can release a small amount until you get the hang of it."
"What if I fail? What if I destroy the whole building and everyone in it?" Riona’s voice cracked. The thought of hurting Florian was enough to send her into despair.
"If you can’t control the flow of the power, you can control the door. Even though I’ve unlocked it, you can still open and close it as you like. Leave just enough of a gap to break the spell."
It was easier said than done. But Riona had no choice if she wanted to escape with Florian. While everyone was still unconscious, she had the opportunity to grab her brother and get out of the palace gate.
Riona took a deep breath. Closing her eyes, she focused inward, searching for the cold energy. As expected, it was still overwhelming.
The energy seemed to have a mind of its own. She struggled against its push for some time. Only when she calmed and let the energy flow slowly was she able to channel it correctly.
Riona opened her eyes and directed her palm at the door. The bulk of the energy gathered at the tip of her finger, ready to be released. Suddenly, her hand felt like it was about to burst.
Suddenly, she felt like her hand was about to burst. Panicked, she moved backward. Simultaneously, a warm hand touched her shoulder.
Within seconds, her cold energy slipped out of her hand.
