Chapter 158: Chapter 158: If he knows who he’s parents are...
"Master Chu, Old Master Shentu is here," a maid announced.
Shentu Chu paused, looking at himself in the mirror, comb in hand.
"Okay. I’ll receive him," he said and dismissed the maid.
"What will come will eventually come," Shentu Chu combed his hair back and whistled a tune.
He fixed his tie in the mirror before stepping out, checked his watch, and popped something into his mouth.
When Shentu Chu entered the main hall, Old Master Shentu was already seated on the couch, cane in hand, wearing a nonchalant, arrogant expression.
"Grandpa," Shentu Chu greeted him with a smile and a slight bow.
But Old Master Shentu didn’t say anything. He didn’t even tell Shentu Chu to sit down, leaving him standing there with a smile. The old man ignored his presence as if he were an insignificant being.
Sitting down before an elder’s approval was considered disrespectful.
The air was awkward and tense. The old servant grew nervous. What if a fight broke out and the old master ended up with a heart attack?
"Chu’er, it seems you’ve managed the family quite well," the old man finally spoke with sarcasm, looking him in the eyes.
"Not at all. It was all thanks to Second Brother that I can manage it so well," Shentu Chu replied politely.
"Reaping what others sow will break the stems. From the stems to the roots, the water might not be the same. The amount of care and effort put into watering the plant will never match the original owner’s," the old man said, sipping his tea calmly.
"Grandpa, nowadays, there’s no need to put in much effort to care for the plant. As long as we have money, we can buy fertilizer and even hire a gardener!" Shentu Chu said, striding over to sit opposite the old man.
The old servant, Ming Yao, flared his nostrils. The old master hadn’t given him permission, yet he’d already sat down! Couldn’t he wait? How impatient!
Old Master Shentu realized that Shentu Chu was different from what he’d imagined. It seemed he had underestimated this person.
Although he was the one who had brought him back that year, he’d never stayed or looked after him. He’d left him in his son’s care. He only knew of his personality and hobbies through others’ words.
Old Master Shentu didn’t understand Shentu Chu like he did Shentu Jing. Had it been a mistake to bring him home that year? Old Master Shentu didn’t know if that decision had been right or wrong. Or did Shentu Chu recovered his memories...?
"You youngsters like to take shortcuts, never understanding the process that leads to success. It doesn’t happen overnight. Too much haste will make the plant grow with problems—chemicals and toxins that will harm you and others in time. Artificial plants can never beat nature," Old Master Shentu said, his voice cold and aloof.
Shentu Chu crossed one leg over the other, smiling as if he were at a party. His laid back attitude made the others in the room livid.
"Grandpa, have some tea. It’s true that artificial plants can never beat nature. But if one puts in hard work and years of study, they can make that plant grow better—more resilient, stronger, and greener than others," Shentu Chu said, raising the teacup to the old man as if it were a glass of wine.
The old man didn’t respond but seemed to stare at Shentu Chu, the coldness in his eyes fading.
At that moment, Old Master Shentu began comparing him to her. So alike! Even the way their eyes glinted under the light was similar! For a second, Old Master Shentu was almost mesmerized.
"Grandpa? Grandpa?"
He was brought back to reality when a man’s voice called him repeatedly.
"Grandpa, are you okay? Why are you spacing out? Lao Zhang, go fetch the doctor," Shentu Chu said.
Lao Zhang was about to call the doctor when Old Master Shentu stopped him.
"I’m fine. Just a little tired from the journey. Chu’er, since you are the family head and CEO of the Shentu Group, I hope you will put the company’s interests first," the old man said, standing up and leaving. The teacup remained untouched.
Shentu Chu watched the old man go upstairs to the guest room, then set his own teacup down. His thin lips, which had been smiling earlier, flattened as he stared at his reflection in the cup.
"I’m going out. Don’t prepare dinner for me," Shentu Chu told the maid, adjusting his sleeves and necktie.
Just as Shentu Chu was about to step into the garage, his watch beeped orange.
He turned back and walked to a dark corner near the garden.
"Sir, I know who it is," a girl’s voice whispered from the shadows.
Neither could see the other’s face. They stood cloaked in darkness.
"Who?" Shentu Chu’s eyes were expressionless.
"You Lan..."
Shentu Chu: "..."
"...and Butler Zhang," the girl finished.
"Are you sure? No mistakes? Butler Zhang has been the old man’s trusted aide for years."
"No mistakes, sir," the girl said solemnly.
Shentu Chu nodded. "Keep an eye on You Lan. Don’t make any moves yet. I’ll handle Butler Zhang. It’s his birthday soon, right? Let’s plan a ’happy’ birthday party for him."
Shentu Chu then entered his car and sped off. On the mansion’s third floor, a pair of eyes watched the car disappear into the distance.
In his room, Old Master Shentu stared at the cane in his hand. Butler Zhang entered with a teacup and bowed slightly to him.
"Old Master, have some tea. Please don’t let Eldest Young Master upset you. He’s only arrogant because he’s new to his position," Butler Zhang said, as if defending Shentu Chu.
"Don’t speak for him. I never expected him to be like this. I always thought he was just quiet and lonely," the old man huffed.
If Shentu Chu ever learns who his parents are, will he hate me? Will he hate the entire Shentu family?
