Chapter 968: Chapter 886: Beware of Parasites

Just past noon, the hovercar slowly landed on the rooftop of the commercial association’s building.

"35 million watts, it’s almost catching up with the senior officials of the Rebel Army."

As the car door opened slowly, Song Lan reminded "Nothingness" that they had a written agreement; if "Nothingness" disputed and violated the agreement, then he would have no choice but to reluctantly accept the 35 million watts.

Given his current salary, it was undoubtedly a financial windfall, greatly alleviating the skyrocketing housing costs in District Seventeen.

He also took the opportunity to glance at the splendidly decorated building, thinking to himself that it truly deserved its reputation as a gold-rush site in people’s eyes. He had only been here one day, and through deceit—cough, legitimate business activities—he had made a fortune.

"I don’t have money."

"Nothingness" said, "But I’ve heard that Oasis has recently welcomed quite a few from the Rebel Army, so you come down first. When I catch a few and exchange them for money, that will be enough."

In fact, the commercial association would meet any of his needs, and he did not have a precise understanding of human currency.

He felt absolutely no guilt about this.

From ancient times until now, before the downfall of the upper world, the "lower world" was their chessboard—let alone the fate of one or two people, there were numerous instances of wars caused by disagreements.

Religious wars, witch hunts...

Any decision often ended with one side’s bloodshed and doom.

"Moreover, I can guarantee that you will be interested in what’s coming next."

"Are you sure?"

"Of course."

"Then let’s make a bet."

Song Lan stood up, "If you can bring out something that interests me, I won’t charge you. On the contrary, if you can’t, you’ll have to pay me double the penalty fee."

"Don’t think I didn’t see the look in your eyes just now!"

"Nothingness" exclaimed, "Do you think my followers who opened the commercial association are shearing me alone? The association is theirs, and I rarely deal with them!"

When he traveled the "outside world," he had heard more than once of the malice of scam gangs. They would never easily let go of their prey; they were not content with just one swindle, but aimed to drain their victims dry, with many suffering under massive debts incited by them.

Now it seemed it was indeed the case.

"This is the consequence of forcing me to leave the air-conditioned room in the hot weather. I only came here with you because we’re friends," said Song Lan, as if it was only right, "Don’t look at me with the eyes you’d use for a scam artist. You should consider this the fee for hiring an expert. Experts like me are hard to come by."

He spoke the truth without guilt.

In this weather over 37 degrees, no one but Lu Xiang could force him out of an air-conditioned room.

If it had been someone else other than "Nothingness," not only would they have failed to call him out, but they might have also received a thrusting palm strike as an added "bonus."

"Hmph, it’s a bet."

The two of them, one after the other, passed through the verification passage on the top floor and went down the stairs.

The reason for taking the stairs was that the building’s elevator was out of order—displayed as such—and the entire building was unusually quiet, devoid of the liveliness one would expect of a commercial association, which made Song Lan suspicious.

Could it be that "Nothingness"’s followers were so bad at business that the association was on the verge of bankruptcy?

Fortunately, the scene in the lobby quickly dispelled Song Lan’s guess, as they quickly understood why the elevator was out of order and why the association was so quiet.

"You gave me a fright; it turns out it’s just a bunch of robbers."

The worry that "Nothingness" had been carrying also settled down as he and Song Lan stood on the second floor, looking through the glass at the robbers who had controlled the crowd on the first floor, handcuffed them, and gathered them together.

However, this scene plunged Song Lan into darkness.

The moment the robbers appeared, his record streak of 21 hours and 23 minutes was shattered!

And the action of the commercial association’s security guards that followed proved that this was not just a regular bank heist. One guard who thought he had found a flaw pulled out a dagger hidden at his waist and lunged at the nearest robber.

In the guard’s scenario, what should have followed was him slashing the robber’s throat, seizing their gun, and before other criminals could react, shooting them one by one, making them pay for their deeds.

The first step of the plan did indeed succeed.

The sharp dagger pierced the robber’s throat.

"Nothingness" had boasted to him on the hovercar that the security personnel hired by the association were top-notch professionals. In a place like Oasis, security was one of the most important concerns of the council.

The guard’s movements were smooth and coordinated, signaling to his colleagues who were ready to act.

It was as if the guards had prearranged their timing, erupting into action simultaneously.

But their plan failed to proceed to the next step.

The throat of the robber gushed out a great deal of blood. When the thick liquid hit the ground, it started bubbling, and the pungent smell wafted up to the second floor.

The guard was taken aback and then horrified to discover he couldn’t withdraw his dagger, as something seemed to be entwined around the blade in the slit neck of the robber.

"You shouldn’t have done that."

Even though the robber had not opened his mouth, the voice reached deep into his mind.

It was a language he had never heard before, yet strangely, he understood its meaning.

He finally saw why his hand couldn’t move—the severed neck had sprouted tentacle-like substances that extended from the blade to his wrist.
