Chapter 918: Chapter 863: Little Mice
The second time the "hallucination" occurred, Vadim was already well-versed in the experience.
He propped himself up; the pain had not yet arrived, but he used "yet" because Vadim knew he was most likely in a comatose state as before, which explained why he couldn’t be seen by the inhabitants of this world.
What appeared here was his consciousness.
Some unknown force guided him to this place.
According to the people from the company "Blue Eyes," this was District 4 in the year 2141.
After waking up last time, Vadim had perused many documents about the year 2141, but to no avail. People called that extended period the Dark Age, and the United Government suffered heavy blows everywhere, yet he never found any information about the Church.
And in reality, District 4 had never left behind any information relating to the Church.
Vadim steadied his mind, and the person who approached him was Lie Ge—the Knight he had encountered before the Church’s bizarre statues. His subordinates addressed him as the Knight Commander.
He knew Lie Ge couldn’t see him, and the reason the latter had walked into this dead end was that Lie Ge’s own situation wasn’t too good either.
The bioengineered beings surrounding him wore unified uniforms, and the blue glow in their eyes made Vadim think of the people from "Blue Eyes." Though they had human faces, their expressions were as cold as machinery.
Both parties stood firm in the dead end and tacitly skipped the meaningless dialogue.
The bioengineered beings encircling Lie Ge didn’t utter a word to interrogate him because, for them, as long as they could bring the target back, they could use various sophisticated instruments to unlock their brains. Whether willing or not, all they knew would be revealed.
Vadim saw the thermal cutting blades and shell launchers.
As the bioengineered squad went into action, he thought he heard the sound of bullets tearing through the air.
Sniper!
But the long-aimed shot missed, and subsequently, Vadim understood why the bioengineered sniper had missed his shot.
The gravity beneath their feet started to shift.
Lie Ge appeared to make no moves, but before the bioengineered beings could close in, he slumped to the ground in a kneeling posture. The oppressive force on them continued to mount, and Vadim clearly saw cracks forming on the ground at his feet. He also heard the walls creaking under the strain.
He knew that if he were not present in the form of a consciousness entity, he might have ended up embedded in the cracked ground like these bioengineered beings.
"Bringing any number of mob soldiers is useless."
Lie Ge walked past the immobilized bioengineered beings expressionlessly. With each step he took, the sounds of objects buckling under the weight grew louder. The cracks on the ground interlaced until they formed a vast pit.
The crushed bodies of the bioengineered beings fell into the pit and were subsequently submerged by the collapsing rubble.
Upon leaving the alleyway, or more accurately, the ruins of the alleyway, Lie Ge looked up in the direction of the sniper and spoke, "If you want to start a war or take me down, you should come out yourself."
This time the "hallucination" lasted much shorter than last time, yet the devastating power deeply imprinted itself in Vadim’s mind. As the hallucination faded and his consciousness slipped into darkness, he felt as if he became one of those bioengineered beings, his body torn apart by the gravity and then buried into the cracks.
When he opened his eyes again, his body was drenched in sweat.
However, this time he found himself not in the brightly lit prosthetic hospital but in a black clinic located in the black market.
The first thing he noticed was a prosthetic torn apart on the operating table, mixed with unidentifiable limbs. Vadim’s heart tightened, and he almost immediately began to check his own body.
The operating system was running normally, but the prosthetic had sustained 65% damage, and all the indicators were flashing red.
After a moment, Vadim discovered a third person in the operating room—the original prosthetic doctor of the black clinic. The man was now wide-eyed and mouth agape, lying in a pool of blood, as if he’d seen something unspeakably terrifying before dying.
"Don’t thank me, this human was delusional and wanted to dismantle your prosthetic, so I made him pay the due price."
The figure with his back towards him said without turning around.
The familiar tone made Vadim guess the identity of the person even without seeing their face.
His presence here meant that the Investigation Bureau’s operation had failed.
Vadim collected his somewhat disordered thoughts and recalled everything he saw before falling into the hallucination. He had encountered a man named Lucky, who could not only keep up with his speed but also took him down in an instant.
"Sorry, the mission failed," Vadim said.
The deadline given by his company had reached its end, and the people from "Blue Eyes" had come before him.
Seeing them at this time was not a good sign.
He didn’t know how military technology would punish him, so Vadim could only make the best of a bad situation—at least this time, "Blue Eyes" used the pretty nurse from the previous encounter at the prosthetic hospital; no matter what, at least he could feast his eyes.
"Failure was to be expected, and we never anticipated that you would be able to hurt that man."
Unexpectedly, this time the person from "Blue Eyes" didn’t probe his thoughts as before but frowned slightly and administered a light punishment, such as stepping on his chest with the high heels to prevent him from rising.
