Chapter 917: Mr. Vadim is a Decent Man_2
The strangeness kept intensifying. Since last night, the city had become bizarre.
Unreachable high-end apartments, weird "dreams", and now, a place meant to detain criminals, the Investigation Bureau had only stationed a slacker who napped during work hours, plus two women with slender arms and legs, clearly not adept at combat.
The "Overload IV" identified the trio.
The napping man hadn’t undergone any cybernetic enhancements, and the two women only had basic functional prosthetics. Even if they hadn’t planned an attack tonight, wasn’t the Bureau afraid that the killer of "Black Sand" would suddenly wake up and slaughter everyone on this floor?
What was even more absurd was that after hearing about the prisoner’s escape, the young man sluggishly lifted his eye mask, and upon seeing him and the thermal energy cutting blade, he didn’t panic at all, instead waving friendly and greeting him.
As for the name Lucky, Vadim had never heard of it.
He had been in District Four for many years, memorizing every notable figure in his mind, which was why he could always gauge situations accurately.
Those not remembered by him were inconsequential characters, whose deaths wouldn’t trouble them.
The two women, however, immediately assumed a defensive posture upon seeing him.
"Vadim!"
They obviously recognized him.
"Don’t rush, one at a time."
The young man lazily rose from his chair, "You’re saying the prisoner ran away?"
Vadim did not act; he knew that the prisoner the two were referring to must be Troy, and he was eager to know the latter’s whereabouts.
Song Lan feigned confusion, knowingly asking, "How could that be, I’ve been on guard here the whole time, how did he slip away right under my eyes?"
Even Vadim couldn’t stand listening to this. He really didn’t understand how this person could say such things.
Considering his behavior of napping during work, not to mention a criminal skilled enough to have killed "Black Sand," even his grandmother could have easily walked out of this building!
It was only the timely arrival of the two women that had saved him.
"His accomplice came to rescue him. We reviewed the surveillance footage, someone came through the wall and dragged him out!"
"Psychics! They mustn’t have gone far, chase them quickly!"
"Mentor Lucky, what about you?"
"This one seems tough, I’ll stay behind to cover your escape."
Upon hearing this, Veronica and Zhuang Chi immediately ran downstairs without looking back. Just moments ago, Roger and Zhuang Chi, who were surveilling outside the Investigation Bureau, had provided many important updates—they had discovered the escape route of Troy and his accomplice, who had gotten into a small van after the rescue.
The surveillance team had the RV waiting at the corner; they would see it as soon as they descended.
"You don’t recognize me?"
Vadim glanced at the receding figures of the two women, now seriously doubting whether this person named Lucky was fully awake.
Anyone from the Investigation Bureau should have known that he had recently killed one of their chiefs, slicing off his head as easily as one would cut a watermelon.
And now, if he were to activate "Overload IV," he could easily decapitate the other party and catch the two female agents before they left the building.
"Recognize you, of course, you’re quite a big shot even in District Seventeen."
At those words, Vadim’s expression immediately darkened.
In this city, few knew of his origins from District Seventeen, and he never talked about his past with anyone.
His history in District Seventeen was not one of glory, having ultimately fled as a loser, like a dog that had lost its home, to District Four.
So, to Vadim, those words were no different from a mocking sneer, and the other’s ease made him think of someone.
The head of security at Kolo Film Industry, who had recently caused another failure in his life.
He asked icily, "Ever heard of ’falling protection’?"
Perhaps this was Lucky’s greatest reliance at this moment.
If it weren’t for the conversation they had just had, he would probably have simply severed the other’s head, but now, Vadim changed his mind.
He decided to let the other experience the process from hope to despair.
"I’ve heard of it."
"Then that’s even better."
The heat energy cutting blade on Vadim’s arm was dazzlingly bright, and even the air seemed much hotter.
He would not fail with the same trick twice, and for him, it was time to step over his past failures.
He was completely focused, ready to activate "Overload IV" the moment his opponent’s body began to fall. He had already foreseen the future, a future in which the body lying on the ground would be missing its head.
"I would advise you not to do that."
Song Lan looked around and lowered his voice, kindly reminding Vadim, "I heard that the crew set up a lot of equipment here. If you use your fall protection now, the footage of your clumsy state will be captured, and by then, your long-maintained image will be totally destroyed."
Song Lan fully considered Vadim’s feelings.
Mr. Vadim valued his reputation more than anyone, a man of dignity.
He came with dignity, and he would leave with dignity.
No audience wants to see a final villain who has not even started fighting, become unable to rise from the ground or kneel to beg for mercy.
So, as a fellow countryman, the last thing he could do for Mr. Vadim was to let him leave with dignity.
"The crew?"
Vadim seemed to realize something, having heard a bit about the recent internal strife at Kolo Film Industry.
A faction represented by Guan Lili wanted to change the company’s order, discard the past traditions, including abolishing the "Criminal Development Program." It had already been hinted by people above that the actions of Guan Lili and others had infringed upon the company’s fundamental interests, and perhaps it was time she "retired."
A car bomb would help them end their careers ahead of time.
Just as they had helped the company deal with aftermaths in the past.
This time, Vadim was much more cautious.
"Overload IV" once again seemed to freeze the world in time, making him the only being capable of moving in this static world.
In an instant, he crossed the distance between the two, and the searing heat energy blade swung toward his opponent’s head.
So far, he had taken down many with the same method, and this time should have yielded the same result.
Vadim’s eyes widened when he saw the blade pass through the neck, his taut nerves finally relaxed, and a smile crept onto his lips.
But the next moment, the smile froze.
All he saw turned into an illusion, the swinging blade passing through the opponent’s body as if it had landed on thin air.
"You didn’t disappoint me, not turning to run, but actually moving closer to me."
The voice was so near, coming from behind him.
"Unfortunately, your ’Overload’ doesn’t actually stop time, but only increases your own speed. So, as long as I can keep up with your speed, the advantage that ’Overload’ provides becomes ineffective."
Vadim faltered.
"Overload IV" was still active, and many defensive counter-strategies flashed through his mind for this situation, but he soon realized that none of them could be implemented—his body couldn’t move an inch, every cell seemed to have entered a state of stasis.
The only thing still active was his consciousness, which felt like a flickering flame gradually fading away.
"The good news is, your journey hasn’t ended just yet."
Something seemed to touch his chest.
When Vadim regained consciousness, he was shocked to find his body was thrown high into the air, clearly seeing the airships on either side.
He hadn’t even had time to feel the pain, and before he could grasp his situation, his body began to plummet rapidly.
Had he just... been kicked?
In a daze, he seemed to see some phantoms overlapping with the world.
He crashed into an unfamiliar yet familiar street.
As his consciousness was about to fade away, Vadim saw the magnificent church and the figure he had met once inside it.
