Chapter 911: Chapter 860: I Have a Friend
Leaving the safe house, he first hit up the nearby food street for breakfast, and before leaving, he specially packed sandwiches and grilled chicken skewers for Veronica and Valerian, chosen carefully from a variety of synthetic ingredients. Unfortunately, the delivery of food was intercepted by the keen-eyed Guan Lili before he could see his students.
"How did you know I’ve been here since five in the morning and haven’t had the chance to eat a bite?"
Guan Lili walked up familiarly and naturally took the to-go bag from Song Lan’s hands, "Teacher Lucky, you’re really considerate."
"I don’t remember asking you, did I?"
"With our relationship, do we still need to be so formal? I’ll treat you to lunch."
Guan Lili bit into the grilled chicken, with grease smearing her lips, and squinted her eyes in enjoyment.
Their relationship could indeed be described as one formed through trials and tribulations.
It was so solid that there was a time in District Seventeen when Song Lan almost silenced her for good.
Surprised by Guan Lili’s reaction, Song Lan asked, "You can actually stomach these synthetic ingredients?"
A Kolo Film Industry executive, in his memory, should be used to delicacies, and even if they had to resort to synthetic foods to stave off hunger, they’d probably eat them with a frown.
"That’s just prejudice. I climbed up from being a junior employee... The food street on the southwest corner, right? The taste hasn’t changed over the years, how’s the owner doing now?"
"Bald."
"Don’t worry, he’s been bald since over a decade ago."
"The problem now is that you’ve eaten the breakfast I brought for my students."
"Veronica and Valerian? That works out, because they left early this morning, and it looks like they even called for some outside help, hmm, from your folks at Military Intelligence Section Seven. Normally, outside assistance is prohibited, but I’ll turn a blind eye this time for the sake of this breakfast."
This is what people refer to as reciprocity.
Yet what Song Lan saw was just the decay within the company, "Won’t the other contestants have complaints?"
"You don’t understand, in the show, only the things captured by cameras are considered to have truly happened. For content we don’t want to see, we can cut them out during editing."
Guan Lili suddenly seemed to think of something, covered her mouth with her hand in a pretense of shock, and said, "You didn’t think ’Master of Rescuers’ was a documentary, did you?"
Song Lan thought, familiarity reveals a person’s true nature, just like that.
He remembered how, back in District Seventeen, Guan Lili would barely dare to breathe around him, and now she was able to snark in front of him without any psychological pressure.
But his mood was serene; any sarcasm was ineffective against him.
"Did the crew have a meeting this morning?"
"The six o’clock meeting, I figured you wouldn’t be up for it so I didn’t call you. It wasn’t anything important."
After a brief exchange, the two headed to the small meeting room arranged by the crew.
The contestants began their second day of strenuous study, and after a short meeting, mentors Sean Grant and Franken took their students out. Though such a segment had never happened before, the competitive atmosphere was something the crew delighted in seeing.
Guan Lili also started talking business, "Based on past experiences, audience members should start discussing the contestants that look like champions by now. We usually also assign the first field task to the contestants around this time."
In the early stages of the show, the field tasks assessed the contestants’ basic skills and didn’t involve any real enemies. But this season was an exception; Vadim and his remnants were unlikely to operate on their timetable.
"We’ve decided to speed up the recording process. The main discussion this morning was about the elimination method for this season."
In past seasons, there would be one contestant who unfortunately left the show at the end of each episode.
They are often unknowingly arranged to complete tasks in venues set up in advance by the crew. During this time, mentors observe each contestant’s actions through hidden cameras and score them. The three with the lowest scores will be put on the elimination seat and join the intense ’choose one out of three’ segment.
Guan Lili continued, "But this time, the filming location hasn’t been prearranged, and we might need every mentor on-site to avoid accidents."
"We could also decide the filming location in advance."
"What do you mean?"
"As long as we know Vadim’s whereabouts, we can make arrangements ahead of time."
Guan Lili stopped in her tracks, "So, Mentor Lucky, you wouldn’t happen to know Vadim’s movements, would you?"
She admitted that she had misjudged Song Lan.
She had assumed that he spent his days idling away and sleeping in the hotel, resulting in her only two students having to resort to outside help. Yet, he had stealthily gathered intelligence on Vadim, which was quite in line with the style of Military Intelligence Section Seven.
"Don’t get me wrong, it’s just a friend of mine..."
"This friend of yours, wouldn’t happen to be your girlfriend, would it?"
"...In any case, Vadim has set his sights on someone named Troy, who’s currently being held in the Interrogation room of the Bureau of Unusual Case Investigation. They are likely to make a move tonight."
