Chapter 898: Chapter 854: Moves_2
"Your section chief is quite the cook?"
Veronica asked curiously. She had been intrigued about the section chief Valerian mentioned ever since their time together, because Valerian praised the chief more than once, painting a picture of a mysterious figure who seemed to be omnipresent in daily life.
According to Zhuang Chi, their section chief was like that player in the game who was clueless about combat but had all the life skills maxed out.
With the threat of Vadim remnants looming, they were supposed to be bogged down with tasks today, but upon entering the ramen shop, Veronica felt herself relax completely, as if blending into the lively and cheerful atmosphere of the place.
At the mention of the section chief, Valerian perked up, "Our section chief’s cooking is really delicious, and he even makes pastries! Seriously, your life’s missing out if you haven’t tried his cooking!"
Song Lan slurped his noodles with his head down, but a cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
Someone here was praising him to death, especially with this kind of backhanded compliment.
"One fan is worth ten haters," or so the saying goes. He had noticed the ramen shop owner’s unfriendly gaze, as if the intense flame was about to single him out and summon him for a "World’s Number One Ramen Conference."
In Song Lan’s opinion, it wasn’t that his cooking skills were so extraordinary, but rather that chefs these days were simply not up to par—a lot of techniques had been lost with the Third World War. Even civilians in major cities could only access synthetic ingredients, and to keep his superiors in good spirits, he ordered ingredients from the premium market of the Ragus Foundation, where everything sold was genuine.
But correspondingly, the prices were as steep as those of luxury goods.
Song Lan could only be thankful that Law Enforcers were a well-paying job in the year 2167.
Veronica asked, "By the way, didn’t you say your section chief also came to District Four? How come I’ve never seen him?"
"That’s a long story."
Valerian lowered his voice, speaking with an air of mystery, "Most likely, our chief got arrested by the supervisor."
"Arrested!? Has your section chief done something wrong?"
"It’s not the kind of arrest you’re thinking."
Valerian’s explanation only made Veronica more confused. What did he mean, not the kind of arrest she was thinking of?
Could there be another kind of arrest?
Valerian, who had several romantic experiences, could feel the innocence in Veronica’s clear eyes, untouched by the world. These offspring from great families often had little experience with romance, or perhaps they were so burdened with family expectations that they couldn’t afford to focus on personal affairs. From a young age, their families placed great hopes on them and wanted them to achieve something significant in the future.
"Let’s just say that our section chief didn’t expect the supervisor to come to District Four and bragged on the phone that the supervisor was a Jinx Star. What he didn’t anticipate was the supervisor booking a ticket here the next day. Now, he’s quite literally reaping what he sowed... Ever since he went back to the room with the supervisor, nobody has seen the chief come out."
"...Was your section chief silenced?"
Veronica, who grew up under the influence of the Counter-Intelligence Department family, opened her mouth in surprise. She immediately linked the situation with criminal activities.
"It’s even more thrilling than being silenced."
Valerian smiled faintly. Even though they were currently in District Four, faced with the case of the death of Kolo Film Industry’s founder, they never forgot their primary duty as Law Enforcers from District Seventeen—they had gathered enough material in District Four, and once filming was over and they returned, they could update some sensational content about the supervisor and section chief’s love story.
"Cough."
Song Lan, the individual being discussed as "silenced," let out a light cough. He truly hadn’t expected Valerian to be so audaciously bold as to fabricate stories about him in front of others!
This was clearly a young person who hadn’t experienced the torture of a docked salary.
"What do you know about Vadim?"
To steer the conversation away from its uncontrollable course, he reluctantly switched to talking about work.
Luckily, Veronica was a career-driven new professional woman, and she immediately put aside the gossip to answer, "Vadim, the original founder of the Vadim gang in District Seventeen. He fled to District Four after failing to fight over turf with another gang leader. Due to his compatibility with cybernetic enhancements, Kolo Film Industry saw potential in him, helping him quickly build his own force in the black market with the company’s influence, and his subordinates are all cybernetically enhanced—making him a particularly tough local snake."
"Chai Ke."
Before Song Lan could speak, Valerian pinpointed the biggest issue with the intelligence.
"Hmm?"
"Vadim lost to Chai Ke in a gang rivalry, he’s the underground emperor of District 17, not some small fry."
As a resident of District 17, who wouldn’t know of Chai Ke’s terror?
Even Valerian himself had suffered an attack from Chai Ke, and was knocked unconscious by one of his men with the butt of a gun.
"I’ve remembered it, Chai Ke."
Veronica nodded, "But as far as I know, he’s already dead."
"That’s another story, I can tell you all about it when we have time later."
"I also saw the footage of those two contestants being attacked in the black market, they... no, it looks like none of us stand a chance against Vadim’s subordinates, they’ve at least implanted subdermal armor."
Song Lan nodded in satisfaction.
It was no surprise that Veronica, whose parents were high-ranking officials in the Counter-Intelligence Department, possessed intelligence-gathering abilities far surpassing those of her peers.
He asked again, "Do you know why the show decided to go with grouping this time?"
"...To keep us as close to the mentor as possible, to avoid being killed by Vadim’s men?"
Although no contestants had ever died in the "Master of Rescuers" show, none of the past contestants had ever faced a force of Vadim’s caliber. To put it bluntly, any one of his men could have been the ultimate villain of past shows.
"That’s one of the reasons, but the mentor can’t be with you all the time, you need to make the most of the time coming up, and learn some methods to escape from the clutches of Vadim’s remnants as soon as possible."
Having heard this, Veronica immediately became excited.
"Mentor Lucky, are you going to teach us that move?"
"...That move?"
This time, it was Valerian’s turn to be confused.
"The move that Mentor Lucky used in District 2!"
Veronica sat up straight; using her parents’ connections in the Counter-Intelligence Department, she interviewed many witnesses to the District 2 incident afterwards. Insiders revealed that Rob Lucci had merely lifted his foot and kicked, turning the Iris Consortium’s pride, their castle, into ruins.
She had also admired the scene that resembled the coming of Judgement Day through the surviving videos more than once.
But since the incident happened so suddenly, no one knew the name of the move, so she could only refer to it as "that move."
If they learned that move, not to mention Vadim’s remnants, even if he himself came, it would just be ending up getting resolved with one kick.
And now, the creator of the "miracle" was sitting right in front of her. Veronica couldn’t contain her excitement and pressed on, "Mentor Lucky, what’s the name of that move?"
...
For some reason, the air of excitement suddenly froze for a few seconds, and Mentor Lucky’s expression became somewhat unnatural.
"You are thinking in the wrong direction."
Song Lan swallowed back the "Invincible Universe" series and said, "Your real goal isn’t to defeat Vadim and his subordinates, but to collect the crime evidence of him and Kolo Film Industry over the years. As an intelligence worker, you should never consider solving problems through violence."
"Then, what are you planning to teach us, Mentor Lucky?"
Despite feeling slightly disappointed, Veronica quickly rallied. In her view, whatever Mentor Lucky taught would be invaluable to her for life.
"This move will be vitally important in your future entanglements with Vadim and his remnants, mastering it proficiently can ensure your survival in any dangerous situation."
Song Lan paused for a moment, then pulled out a new move he had concocted after deep thought, "It’s called, Ground Protection."
