Chapter 862: Chapter 637: A Boss’s Life Starting from Zero_2
People say that the unknown often stems from fear, and Guan Lili deeply agreed with that.
When she had established a temporary hideout in the "killer’s" apartment with a blanket over her, she felt a sense of calm settle within her.
She was still the one who paid for the room with her Platinum Membership Card, and considered that indulging in it before getting silenced was certainly better than dying in a state of constant terror. She noticed the lingering scent in the room, raised her hand, and requested, "I’ll have a bowl of fish soup."
"You’ve come to the right person."
Song Lan automatically ignored Guan Lili calling him a serial killer; under Little Blackie’s long-term siege, he had learned to deal with such things generously, now automatically glossing over keywords such as "serial killer," "cold-blooded assassin," and "psychopathic murderer," "These fish are quite special, not something even a company executive like you could taste on a regular basis."
It didn’t take long for him to serve the hot fish soup on the table.
The fish soup was delicious, but more importantly, after consuming a bowl, Guan Lili felt a warm feeling inside her.
"I’ve changed my mind."
She corrected herself, "You’re not a cold-hearted killer, but a heartwarming one."
Offhandedly, she had created a new occupation to contrast with the cold-blooded killer, and even out of professional habit, she began seriously considering the possibility of incorporating this new job into future film and television works of Kolo Film Industry.
"Is there a difference?"
"Yes, a heartwarming assassin provides their targets with an experience that makes them feel at home before making a move."
Guan Lili rested her chin on her left hand, a habit when she pondered. She was now completing the settings for the new roles that would appear in future Kolo films and television series. If she survived this ordeal, these settings would certainly be put to use next time.
"What do you want from me?"
"Did you discover that the founder survived a certain death, so you went to finish him off?"
Guan Lili asked directly.
The Investigation Bureau considered it an unresolved case; they could only hope that the advertising projector caught the details of the founder’s fall from the building. But she knew that Song Lan could manipulate the founder with Spiritual Energy to walk up to the rooftop and then jump down.
She added, "Right, interference-type Spiritual Energy, that should be the industry term."
To her surprise, Song Lan revealed an astonished expression and poked his head out of the kitchen, "What? Your founder died again?"
No wonder Lu Xiang left in a hurry with "something urgent" just minutes ago, leaving him alone in the hotel kitchen to scale fish.
"...Again?"
Guan Lili gave Song Lan a deep look, feeling that his surprise didn’t seem feigned. Moreover, as a killer who had taken numerous lives, if he had been the one, there would be no need for him to deny it.
Nevertheless, she still caught a subtle detail, "’Again’? Did that old man die once before?"
"That’s a long story."
"You always say it’s a long story, but since you don’t seem to have anything else to do, you might as well tell me slowly, including that person sitting across from me."
Guan Lili pointed at Qi He, "He is a representative of the Ragus Foundation, and they certainly wouldn’t let it go if he ended up dead!"
"Do you have Qi He’s phone number?"
"Yes."
"Why don’t you give him a call now and see?"
"Why? You’re not trying to scare me, are you? Just so you know, I’m actually quite brave. Years ago, I even followed the crew of a horror film, and I personally approved all the horror props."
Guan Lili easily conjured up many classic scenes from horror thrillers in her mind.
For instance, the moment she connected the call, she would find Qi He’s phone actually in the pocket of her clothes or behind the sofa cushion.
Even so, she still dialed the number with some skepticism.
However, the truth proved to be much more terrifying than she could imagine. After the phone rang three times and someone picked up, Qi He’s voice came from the other end.
Guan Lili’s eyes widened, and she was momentarily at a loss for words.
Only after triple-checking that Qi He across from her was still asleep, motionless, did she quickly make up an excuse that Kolo Film Industry had an event next month and she hoped Qi He would attend, followed by some chitchat, before hanging up the phone.
"You should understand now, right?"
Song Lan had always adhered to the belief that facts are more persuasive than rhetoric.
"I understand,"
Guan Lili nodded timidly, "You had a dummy of Qi He made, it seems I’ve wronged you."
As for why Song Lan, a male, would order a life-size dummy of Qi He... it’s probably best she doesn’t know.
"You’re completely misunderstanding it."
"What, are you saying there actually are two Qi Hes in this world? Or is the real old guy actually dead after last night’s explosion, and what we saw today is a fake?"
Guan Lili joked bitterly as she spoke off the cuff.
But the sudden silence sent a shiver through her, and she asked in a much softer voice, "...Is that really the case?"
"If everything goes as expected, you should be able to meet your founder again soon, the living kind."
Even wrapped in a blanket, Guan Lili still got goosebumps all over her body.
It took her a long while before she broke the sudden silence, "I am even considering inviting you to our company to be a scriptwriter."
At the same time, she discreetly sent a message to the founder, reporting the work she had organized in the morning and asking for guidance on the next steps.
The founder replied quickly.
He read through the work report in less than five minutes and gave constructive suggestions for Guan Lili’s future work direction.
"The question now is, who killed him again?"
"That Civil Assassin Organization, I bet."
"It’s not them this time."
At least when Song Lan asked Gustav, he claimed he had been closely monitoring Monica, who was now wandering aimlessly on the seaside boulevard in District 4, as if she was clearing her mind.
Compared to the last time when a nuclear bomb was detonated in a villa district, this assassin seemed much more professional.
Guan Lili reported that everything on the rooftop of Eden Hotel was normal; the investigative agents found no signs of a fight, which was precisely the biggest issue.
To kill the founder of Kolo Film Industry would inevitably meet fierce resistance from the "Sea of Souls" program, and now that "Qi He" had abandoned the assassination plan, he had Gustav evacuate District 4 as soon as possible, implying that the assailant was someone they didn’t know about.
"So what do we do now?"
Although Guan Lili didn’t know how Song Lan was so certain, seeing his definitive attitude, she chose to believe him.
"Watch out for your safety, then... get used to your founder’s process of dying and coming back to life as soon as possible."
Given the "Sea of Souls" program’s level of importance to Kolo Film Industry, it was foreseeable that no matter how many times he was killed, he would come back again.
As for the unknown assassin’s reason to desperately want the founder dead...
Song Lan thought of a possibility.
The crime psychology books on Lu Xiang’s shelf mentioned that putting oneself in the criminal’s shoes often brought unexpected insights.
When RT6 promised that as long as they could find Kolo Film Industry’s hidden biological lab, they would help connect them to the "Sea of Souls," a thought sprouted in Song Lan’s mind.
No matter how the "Sea of Souls" program altered consciousness, it couldn’t go against the basic principle—a clone carrying the founder’s consciousness couldn’t appear out of nowhere; there must be a transmission process and a moment when it exits the doors of the biological lab.
In theory, as long as the founder is killed enough times and by using the "Skynet" system to observe each clone’s appearance time and location, they could roughly estimate the biological lab’s approximate location.
But Song Lan had to emphasize, this was the thought process of a serial killer, not his.
As a compassionate good person, how could he possibly bring himself to kill a centenarian? Not even if it was a clone, because that would be no different from the actions of a villain.
And now, it seemed a real villain had emerged.
