Chapter 76: Chapter 76: We are the Ballot Champions_1
The worst-case scenario had happened.
Song Lan never expected that their department, with only three staff members and utterly irrelevant to the city-wide meeting, would be included in the attendance roll.
Being on the list meant that they were required to be present throughout the entire meeting.
"Director Lu, don’t you ever want me to take a break!?"
Song Lan howled at the heavens.
"It should have nothing to do with the director. She initially didn’t plan to include our department in the attendance list. It’s the unanimous decision of all departments."
"A voting result? We’ve had no quarrel with anyone recently, why would they vote for us?"
Song Lan was utterly puzzled. Ever since he started working here, he had never had any conflicts with anyone.
"Head of department, there’s something I’m not sure if I should say."
"Go ahead."
"Ever since the first day, I felt that there was a major misconception about us from other departments."
Theoretically, the existence of their department was to help the Law Enforcers solve their psychological problems. But ever since the automatic hamburger vending machine appeared, their department had seemingly become a temporary canteen in the Manor. Instead of seeking counseling, colleagues came mainly to buy hamburgers.
"The primary aim of their voting for us was for us to bring the machine to the conference venue to solve their food problems."
Originally, for those who had long relied on nutritional injections, food was an unnecessary luxury in daily life. But after truly tasting the delicious food, their appetite was fully awakened to the extent that they always felt somewhat empty without eating something daily.
This was Valerian’s direct experience.
As a member of the counseling department, she bought a hamburger every day as a reward for her hard work.
From previous city-wide meeting experiences, no large-scale criminals would risk the world’s disgrace and storm into the venue taking all department heads hostage. Those who would even think of such an idea were usually clowns, nabbed by security before they could even enter the front door.
Therefore, most of the time during the meeting, departments on duty basically wandered aimlessly around the venue area under the guise of patrolling.
So, the staff thought that if they could hold a hamburger while strolling, chatting, and eating would make the tedious security work become immediately delightful.
Song Lan never expected that his plan to attract a crowd for his department would backfire, leading to their irrelevant department becoming the voting champion for the city-wide meeting attendance.
Even Lu Xiang, as the department head, couldn’t disregard public opinion and ignore the voices of the masses.
You like burgers, huh?
Song Lan exuded an ominous aura. People in 2166 were too naive to understand the terrifying consequence of offending a chef.
He had already thought of offering an extravagant set meal for his hardworking colleagues during the meeting.
Naturally, the main course of the set meal was hamburgers.
To align with the theme of the city-wide meeting, they tweaked the ingredients too. The hamburger buns were selected from the best moldy bread, fermented for 81 days to ensure each mold appeared as big as a sesame seed. The hamburger patty was juicy, tender and only 0.05% cooked to let people taste the raw essence of the ingredients. The side dish was creatively decayed vegetable leaves. Any leaf that hadn’t been gnawed by worms didn’t deserve to be on this menu. Lastly, the beverage was milk that had expired three years ago. After eating this set meal, you could be crowned the ’King of Projectile Warriors’ in the digestive sphere.
As Song Lan gnashed his teeth thinking about the menu, he finally relented for the sake of having functioning toilets at the venue. He abandoned his plan that would let the less worldly colleagues experience the horror of a disgruntled chef.
Since attending was inevitable, he had to find a way to slack off at the venue.
He turned his head and saw the firm face of Elmon.
His disciple had practically written ’Ready at all times’ on his face.
An idea crossed his mind.
Provided that all food remained ’fully automated’ during the city-wide meeting, all he needed to do was find a cool spot, bring out a chair to sit on, bring his tablet along with a few movies, and wait patiently for the meeting to end.
But to achieve full automation for the food, he first needed to ’program’ the recipes into the vending machine.
Elmon.
You’re already a qualified automatic hamburger vending machine.
And now, it’s time to add new recipes.
The key to the recipes was simplicity and easy-to-handle, so Song Lan decided to bring forward the fried rice, dumplings, and stewed food he had thought of beforehand.
"Since that’s the case, let’s knock off early today."
Song Lan waved his hand and said, "We’re living in unusual times. Given we have to prepare for the imminent city-wide meeting, coming in late and leaving early are permitted."
He needed to rush home and quickly feed all the simple recipes he could think of into Elmon’s program.
"Valerian, your duty will be huge once the meeting begins."
"Eh?"
"Because we’re short-handed, and Roger has been temporarily transferred to work as a safety advisor, you’ll have to handle welcoming guests, cleaning up dishes, and tallying the prices. Brace yourself, you’ll be swamped."
In her current outfit, it would be a waste not to work as a waitress.
Song Lan had already visualized what their stall would look like during the meeting.
"Sir."
Valerian took a deep breath, "Aren’t we called the ’counseling department’?"
She felt that Song Lan had completely misunderstood her purpose for the reminder. She wished for him to establish a correct work orientation as the department head and correct the misunderstanding of other colleagues who mistook them for a cafeteria!
Yet Song Lan did not only show no intention to rectify the situation, but he also added fuel to the fire, planning to set up a stall during the city-wide meeting.
"Now isn’t the time to consider this. In order to roll out the new menu, I’m going to be busy for the next few days, and I might not come to the department. You can adjust the working hours yourself."
"The problem isn’t there..."
Huh?
The anxious Valerian suddenly paused.
Roll out new dishes?
Didn’t that mean she would have the chance to taste more kinds of food during the city-wide meeting?
"Sir, don’t worry about it. Leave the stall to me. You just focus on studying the new menu!"
What ’counseling department’?
She doesn’t remember signing up with such a department.
In here, it clearly should be the cafeteria of Law Enforcement Manor.
