Chapter 722: Chapter 720: Coach, I Want to Get Stronger!_1
As the conversation went on, Mr. Hog broke into a cold sweat, realizing that the man before him seemed to understand his abilities better than he did himself and casually mentioned more than five ways Jock could easily eliminate him.
The fervor that had once filled him cooled, allowing him to grasp many details he had previously overlooked.
For instance, someone mentioned that a Psychic who could erase time had appeared in The First Region.
It made Mr. Hog recall the bizarre video Dominas sent back to his family before dying, as well as his true purpose for coming to The First Region in the first place.
He initially just wanted to replace the Secretary-General High-level councilor’s identity, then use the power at his disposal to publicly reveal the identity of the "enthusiastic citizen," but before he could fulfill this wish, he got entangled in even more unexpected events. The situation in The First Region was much more complicated than he had envisioned.
Especially since the Chairperson of the Council, who was supposed to be dead in the reports, was still alive, staying hidden at Military Intelligence Section Seven, secretly preparing countermeasures.
"Jiu once said that Psychic Abilities can’t be inherited after death, nor will there be two Psychics with the same abilities..."
This was the intelligence he had gathered while investigating "Dominate," and it applied to the man before him as well.
Therefore, the identity of the highest operational commander of Military Intelligence Section Seven was about to be revealed.
It also answered a long-standing question of his—their man in The Seventeenth Region wasn’t defeated by a bunch of nobodies; they were from the Chairperson of the Council’s secret operations department.
Even Lu Xiang being transferred directly to The Seventeenth Region after graduation made sense.
All of this was orchestrated by Military Intelligence Section Seven, or rather, by the Chairperson himself.
Perhaps they sent a large number of people to The Seventeenth Region to conduct a secret investigation related to Void or possibly to investigate those replaced by Worms.
The multitude of clues chilled Mr. Hog to the bone as he pondered them in fright.
No wonder the Foster Family had hit a wall time and again in their investigations into the "enthusiastic citizen." He had always suspected that someone within the Review Meeting deliberately wanted to erase their existence. He’d thought it was the Ragus Foundation’s doing, but he never expected that it was the Chairperson himself pulling the strings behind the scenes.
"You’re a smart man, so now it’s time to make a choice."
"It seems I don’t have much of a choice."
Mr. Hog bowed his head, realizing the reasons involved wasn’t difficult for a politician.
He and Jock, as well as the High-level Parliament, had completely fallen out, each side wishing to be rid of the other. Even if he told them that the Chairperson of the Council was still alive and his whereabouts, "Dominate" wouldn’t spare him.
But, if the Review Meeting emerged as the victor in this conflict, then he too would return to the pinnacle as a winner.
The only problem now was the man before him.
"But, all those who knew your identity in the past are dead."
Mr. Hog wasn’t sure whether he would be the next to die at the other’s hand, especially since Song Lan’s understanding of his abilities made him suspect that Song Lan had always considered how to kill him.
"Stop worrying needlessly, Mr. Hog."
Song Lan said, "If I had such thoughts, you would have been dead the first time we met... So, let me put aside past prejudices for now and focus on dealing with the troubles at hand."
...
It had been a quarter of an hour since they left Mr. Hog’s room.
They had achieved the goal of their conversation. At least Mr. Hog was no longer clamoring to pursue a victory that was no different from deliberately offering up easy kills in his plans. He began to seriously contemplate how to turn the situation around.
And just now, she had witnessed an act of deception first hand.
"I’ve always thought you had the potential to be the Black Hand behind the scenes."
As they reached a relatively quiet corner, Lu Xiang suddenly spoke up, lamenting that initiative had always been Dumb Bird’s weak point; under normal circumstances, even she couldn’t prevent Song Lan’s process of turning into a lazy fish.
She used to think Song Lan was just being stubborn, but now she truly believed that fate was maintaining the balance in an unfathomable way.
How did that saying go?
Fate had opened almost every door for Song Lan, just symbolically closing a window for him at the end.
And Song Lan seemed happy to enjoy a lazy, leisurely life.
"Right now, Mr. Hog must think that the grudge between you two originated from the orders of the Chairperson of the Council."
Just now, Song Lan had deftly shifted the conflict onto the Chairperson of the Council, turning this personal vendetta into a dispute between the Foster Family and Military Intelligence Section Seven, and moreover, one founded on a misunderstanding.
But Lu Xiang felt that Mr. Hog’s easy acceptance of Song Lan’s explanation was also influenced to some extent by interference-type Psychic Abilities.
Mr. Hog was a completely different person from who he was a few days ago.
Now, he was a warrior willing to risk his life to fight "Dominate" and save his friends.
"I’m so tired. Home is the best place to be."
A few short days in The First Region made Song Lan realize one thing — he absolutely did not want to live in a place filled with deceit and intrigue, where there was not the slightest bit of sincerity and trust between people. The person who called you brother during the day might be the one pushing you into a fire pit at night.
Jock and Hog had given him a firsthand look at The First Region’s plastic friendships.
In this city of cold hearts, perhaps only Lu Xiang’s shoulder and thigh retained some warmth.
"I guess I still prefer the slow-paced life of a small city."
"The pace of life in the Seventeenth Region isn’t slow at all."
Lu Xiang felt the need to correct Song Lan’s misconceptions. People in the border city were also running around almost every day, it was just that their busyness differed from that of The First Region’s corporate folks. In this day and age, aside from a few individuals at the very top of the United Government, no one had it easy.
Except for this wicked Dumb Bird, Song Lan.
Because he had bribed his superior. Otherwise, with his attendance record and lackadaisical work attitude, he would have long been swept out the door by the Law Enforcers.
However, each time Lu Xiang saw Song Lan effortlessly switch between the villainous boss and the exhausted worker, she found it quite interesting.
She knew that if there weren’t a bunch of people in The First Region plotting to blow Seventeenth Region to smithereens, Song Lan would have definitely been unwilling to get involved in these troublesome matters.
Song Lan’s plan to go back to his room for a nap was ultimately shattered, because just as they were about to head upstairs, a young man with his arms crossed stood in their way.
Yaku had recovered nicely these past few days, with his wounds healing up quite a bit.
And today, he had made an important decision.
The moment he saw Song Lan, he walked straight towards him.
Seeing Yaku’s somewhat exaggerated stride reminded Lu Xiang of something odd — she couldn’t shake the feeling that many people’s postures and walking styles had lately been influenced by some mysterious force, exuding a bizarre aura.
"Summarize what you want to say in ten words or less."
The impatient Song Lan was the first to speak.
"Understood."
Yaku nodded, his eyes filled with determination, "Coach, I want to become stronger!"
In just six words, he expressed his purpose and determination. The recent events had greatly impacted the young man, to the point that he dreamed every night of survivors exploding around him despite Jasmine telling him he was perfectly fine. But when he woke from those dreams, Yaku still felt as if his entire body was burning with pain.
Before coming to The First Region, Yaku also thought he was one of the United Government’s finest, a young contender for the Six Stars rescuer position. But now, he realized how limited his strength was in the civil war that had engulfed the entire United Government.
Furthermore, the current Six Stars rescuers could all potentially become his enemies.
After much cajoling, Jasmine finally disclosed a piece of information to him.
Rob Lucci was the strongest Psychic she and her sister had ever seen, likely stronger than any of the current Six Stars rescuers. Yaku also noticed that when Jasmine said this, even the proud Rose conceded her point.
So, he had come to an important decision.
"Please guide me to become stronger!"
Yaku’s voice echoed through the hallway, his gaze unmatched in determination and fervor.
After becoming a candidate for the Six Stars, he hadn’t gotten stronger in a long time. The company could no longer provide much help for his growth and slowly started focusing on how to quickly accumulate merit.
Based on his own research, the conceptual understanding of strength among Six Stars candidates and even Six Stars rescuers was quite vague. Even among those of the same rank, the discrepancy in power could be significant. At least, the United Government hadn’t yet developed a combat power meter to accurately measure each rescuer.
The Psychic Abilities research institutions’s character cards did provide some reference value but were still quite limited in what they could offer for their level.
"Do you want to know the method to become stronger?"
Looking at Yaku, who nodded vigorously, Song Lan spoke emotionlessly, without a hint of feeling in his tone, "Since you have earnestly asked, I will tell you. The key lies in whether you can persistently maintain the method I will tell you."
Upon hearing this, even Lu Xiang held her breath.
In the time she had known Song Lan, he had never publicly disclosed the secrets of his training.
"From today, you must maintain regular sleep patterns and healthy dietary habits, quit smoking and drinking, and absolutely avoid prohibited drugs. Go to the prosthetic hospital for a check-up once a year to ensure that all diseases are nipped in the bud. Additionally, controlling your emotions is also very important; you should always try to keep yourself happy and joyful in life."
"I can do all that!"
Yaku said, growing more and more eager for the secrets to come.
"You have more talent than many of them; that’s why I am telling you this secret," Song Lan said. "Many people your age don’t realize the importance of maintaining their health. If you grasp this point, you’ll leave them far behind — keep up with this regimen of healthy living, and when all your competitors are suffering from serious illnesses in their old age because they didn’t care for their health, you will become The Strongest."
