Chapter 719: Chapter 717: Entrusting the Untrustworthy_1
"I’d like to hear your reasons, Hog Foster."
The devil’s whispers echoed throughout the room, omnipresent and piercing straight to one’s heart.
Facing the man who arrived breathlessly at the door, "Dominate" suddenly became intensely curious. Therefore, it decided to postpone its plan slightly, considering this a reward for Hog’s courage.
As per the agreement with Jock, she was supposed to detonate the Spiritual Energy bomb the moment Hog was within the explosion range, granting him a quick release.
"You’ve been to the Spiritual Energy Research Institute; you must have heard about me there. With that being the case, why would you still do this?"
It had heard from Jock that Hog Foster, like other council members, cherished his life greatly, never attending any important events without his bodyguards, as if he wouldn’t feel secure without a wall of copper and iron before him.
Of course, this was because the judicial system of the United Government was the place most likely to offend people.
Not only ordinary citizens but many members of the Foster Family had been killed by assassination.
Assassins from the Innovator Faction, disguised as civilians.
And this was the end Jock had designed for Hog—in a state of mental disarray, due to negligence of his personal security, he was assassinated while visiting a psychologist alone; this might have already become a standard ending for members of the Foster Family.
Yet, here was a man who treasured his life like gold, arriving alone in front of her without any bodyguards.
Could it be...
Had Hog Foster really become so ill that he thought he was sincerely coming to apologize to him?
For a director whose name he couldn’t even remember?
"Because I unexpectedly discovered a person who should have been dead appearing in The First Region."
There was not a trace of fear in Hog’s eyes as he entered, casually closing the security door behind him, severing his own way out.
Lucy, standing beside him, stopped trembling. For some reason, Hog at this moment gave her a strong sense of safety, just as when she faced the out-of-control Orman not long ago, and he saved her from the brink of death.
Rationality couldn’t lead her to figure out a way to break the game, even if Hog could stop the entire world’s time for two seconds, but it was far too brief, not even enough for him to escape the range of the explosion.
The moment the Spiritual Energy bomb detonated, it would take less than a second to swallow the entire building.
Perhaps, she should trust her instincts and feelings now.
Hog’s gaze swept every corner of the room shrouded in darkness, saying, "And this dead man must be held accountable for all the recent riots."
"Jock did mention your character. He said you were vengeful, always keeping the idea of a blood debt, blood repayment on your lips."
Those ignorant might think the Foster Family got its start with organized crime.
"Dominate" smirked because it suddenly understood.
Hog had gone mad.
Perhaps he was completely immersed in the hallucination that he was a Standin messenger; it was quite normal for a lunatic to act irrationally.
Probably only a madman could understand the thoughts and feelings of Hog at this moment.
"He’s not wrong about one thing; dying here might not be such a bad thing for you."
In this way, at least others would not see the disgraceful state of one’s later years, becoming the laughingstock of all.
"What about you? Will you just hide in the shadows, lacking even the courage to face me?"
Hog challenged with a provocative tone.
"If that is your final wish..."
There was an unusual commotion from a corner of the room; the countless whispers also converged to that point at this moment.
Hog witnessed the most eerie scene he had ever seen in his life—the pitch-black shadows seemed to have been given life. Under the moonlight, they gathered into a point within his line of sight, condensing into a human-like silhouette, but he could not see the person’s face clearly. The archives that Jiu had collected from the Psychic Abilities Research Institute did not contain a photo of "Dominate" from when it was alive.
All aspects of the human form were shrouded in darkness.
"Your old friend Jock is very concerned about you. He hopes you can go on your way a bit more easily. How about being blown to bits? You can come closer to her that way, and your consciousness will disperse in an instant, not even catching up to the pain."
"I will find him sooner or later, but you probably won’t see that day come."
Hog estimated the time, advancing towards "Dominate."
He pinned all his hopes on Rob Lucci. If the latter had taken the hovercar right after receiving his message, he should be nearing the vicinity by now.
"My duty is to send people like you to the guillotine first and foremost."
"Nice gaze, reminds me of the first time I saw you."
"Dominate" spoke with a somewhat nostalgic tone, although Hog did not take its advice to spend the moment before death with Lucy, which was more to its liking, "It was on the big screen at the city square. You were also judging a person who resisted the Foster Family with such righteousness."
But the progress was still too slow.
It raised its hand lightly, and Hog’s gun-holding right hand uncontrollably lifted, pointing the muzzle at its own brow.
"Dominate" guessed that Hog’s plan was to use those two seconds to achieve a surprise victory—the premise being that he truly was the so-called Standin messenger and not just a fantasy in his own mind.
The index finger pressed the trigger, and the flash from the gun’s muzzle momentarily lit up the entire room.
Lucy instinctively covered her ears.
However, the bullets that should have blown its head apart passed through the shadows at the skull, leaving several bullet holes in the wall.
If that was Mr. Hog’s calculated plan, it was far too dull.
"It seems you were distracted while at the Spiritual Energy Research Institute. That researcher must have mentioned these most basic concepts to you – bullets can’t kill a Consciousness Entity."
In both the real world and the space where time stood still, these characteristics were unchangeable.
From the moment of their death, the physical laws of this world could no longer affect them.
The "Dominate" felt Hog’s later years were already pitiful enough; there was no need for him to pour all his beliefs into a few bullets that would never be effective.
Admirable courage, yet powerless.
This is the extent of human strength; it always has limits.
Besides, it hadn’t told him something even more important.
"Moreover, you didn’t read that text message the psychologist sent you carefully. I’ve mercifully explained my powers to you, no secrets can escape my eyes."
The "Dominate" chuckled lightly, "This also includes your plan to buy time and wait for Rob Lucci to come to your support."
Jock would never have dreamed that he was not the only backstabber in the affair.
Hog Foster never sent the top operatives of Military Intelligence Section Seven back to the Sixth District; they were still in The First Region, cooperating with the Chairperson of the Council as their last stronghold. But the "Dominate" didn’t expose Hog’s little trick, leaving them here to accomplish its real plan.
It had only ever had one purpose in getting involved in this dispute.
Rob Lucci.
Or rather, the "Devil."
Upon hearing this, Hog momentarily paused, and his facial expression finally changed a bit.
"What a pity, I think you should take a look at your phone; this might be your last chance."
Whether Hog wished to or not, the "Dominate" helped him take out his phone and opened the unread message from two minutes ago, instantly plunging Hog’s mood into the depths.
In his plan, he would coordinate with Lucky to launch a surprise attack against the "Dominate." He had believed Mr. Lucky was already lying in wait near the hospital, just waiting for him to give the signal to strike.
But this message told him, they were busy just then and didn’t have time to check their phones.
He believed in his good fortune though, confident that he would turn danger into safety.
In an instant, Hog even entertained the idea of calling to curse them out; he had envisaged he might die here, but never imagined it would be in such an ignominious way.
The allies missing the final showdown for absurd reasons such as "oversleeping" or "being too busy to check the phone" made Hog feel he might never rest in peace.
"I can tell you quite clearly that they aren’t making a move right now."
The "Dominate" found the scene terribly ironic—the twist of reality was far more interesting and more despairing than anything it had planned.
It wasn’t part of its plan.
Otherwise, it would have detonated the bomb as soon as it knew the "Devil" was nearby, and then left as quickly as possible.
"It’s just that you don’t understand that man."
On reflection, how could someone as notoriously bad-tempered, even referred to by them as the "Devil," possibly cooperate with a mere human for a last stand?
Watching people in despair facing death was one of the "Devil’s" greatest interests after all.
After all, it was he who had brought despair into their midst in the first place.
"Well, Mr. Hog, it’s time to go. I wish you all a good dream."
The "Dominate" made the gesture to detonate the bomb in front of him.
Hog paused; he saw Lucy’s vacant eyes, and an explosion shattered the stillness of the night.
"Boom—!"

Meanwhile, at Galaxy Transport Company.
Song Lan pulled up a chair and looked up at the night sky illuminated by airship advertisements overhead, draped in a coat to ward off the cold.
He felt he should be standing by the window to match the current mood, but due to physical and mental fatigue, he only wanted to sit.
"Aren’t you going to go?"
Lu Xiang asked, "Hog might have already encountered the ’Dominate.’"
Even as a Standin, their powers were not on the same level.
Especially for Hog, two seconds was too brief for him to do anything; even preserving his own life would be a luxury.
"No need."
Song Lan shook his head. He slowly closed his eyes, entering a state of rest, "Because I’ve already told him... the ’Dominate’ is no longer a match for him."
