Chapter 718: Chapter 716: Convergence_1
Song Lan came to Lu Xiang’s room alone, and Lu Xiang moved a chair to sit in the center of the room. Just sitting there, she exerted a tremendous pressure on Song Lan.
When the manager had a poker face, she always exuded the aura of an icy female boss.
It had nothing to do with looks; even if one could change their appearance to someone else’s, their temperament would not alter as a result.
"I began to notice from The Second Region."
Lu Xiang scrutinized Song Lan’s current appearance, "You now seem particularly adept at flirting."
From the head maid of the Iris Consortium to the deputy leader of the anti-terrorism mobile squad in The First Region, the current Song Lan seemed to have an exceptional attraction to these "senior-level" members of the opposite sex.
Unlike the head maid, who was subtly expressed and reserved, Melissa was outgoing and she made no attempt to hide her joy. When Song Lan returned, she observed Melissa once more, alone in the compartment, her gaze fixed on Song Lan’s back until he vanished, followed swiftly by a blush coloring her cheeks.
"Old Lu, hear me out, I spoke to her for the first time today."
"I know, I am not blaming you."
Lu Xiang spoke indifferently; she was never the type to blame others, and no one understood Song Lan’s attraction to "superiors" better than she did—she was the first to be influenced by him.
She was more skilled at analyzing and resolving issues, "I reflected deeply just now. There have been a lot of incidents in The First Region lately, and you often stay up late. So, out of a desire to conserve your energy, I’ve allowed you excessive rest time."
But Lu Xiang suddenly remembered a philosopher who once said that energy was like water in a sponge—there was always more to be squeezed out.
And considering Song Lan’s recent state, staying up late didn’t seem to drain him as much as she had imagined.
"It’s getting late."
Lu Xiang glanced at the time on her phone, "It’s your usual rest time now."
"Wait a second, Old Lu, think about it—Mr. Hog is still in danger. We can’t just leave him to his fate!"
Upon hearing this, Song Lan turned pale, arguing with reason, trying to awaken the conscience in the other, "He’s been targeted by ’Dominate,’ and could be assassinated at any moment. Do you really have the heart to let our new friend die tragically?"
’Dominate’s’ methods were extremely brutal; those affected by spiritual energy bombs often didn’t even leave complete corpses behind.
"You have a point."
Lu Xiang nodded her head.
Just when Song Lan secretly breathed a sigh of relief, he noticed a fervent glow in her eyes, "Then you should stay more alert, lest you miss his distress messages."
She knew about Song Lan’s quality of sleep; no matter where he was, he could sleep like a baby until the next morning.
Thus, he was very likely to miss Hog’s distress messages in his dreams.
To prevent Song Lan from living with the lifelong regret of a new friend’s death, Lu Xiang made an important decision, "Come on, I’ll help you stay awake."
..................
Late at night.
Somewhere in The First Region.
This was the darkness before dawn, when even the overnight workers succumbed to the most mentally exhausting moment of the day, a sudden urgent phone call awoke Hog from his slumber.
The caller ID showed Jock’s name.
By the second ring, Hog had opened his eyes.
His sleep had always been light, any slight disturbance would wake him—a habit he had developed over the years as a politician. From a young age, he had heard many tales of legislators assassinated in their sound sleep during the dark times when being a lawmaker was not necessarily a safe status.
"Hog."
Jock’s voice sounded tired, as if he had not slept all night, "It wants to negotiate with you personally."
He had indeed been worn out by this matter all day long, but not from negotiating with "Dominate."
Just a few minutes earlier, the High-level Parliament had identified someone from the younger generation of the Foster Family who could replace Hog, someone with outstanding workability and well-regarded among his peers and family. More importantly, the candidate promised to comply with the High-level Parliament’s arrangements if he could become the next leader of the Foster Family.
Especially on major issues involving the future fate of the United Government, he would unconditionally support all decisions made by the High-level Parliament.
This was exactly what they wanted to see.
The Foster Family controlled a judiciary system critical to the United Government; any public trials had to go through their hands. This represented a strategic high ground for the future image of the High-level Parliament, and this high ground should not remain in the hands of someone with a mental illness.
As an old friend, Jock felt deep regret for the fate that awaited Hog.
However, he had given Hog more than one opportunity to back out, and Hog had not seized them.
For his own consolation, Jock thought that perhaps such an end was also a blessing for Hog; at least he wouldn’t become the butt of ridicule for his illness in his later years. Besides, "Dominate" had also reached an agreement with him.
It would make Hog suffer as little as possible in his death.
"The location."
"Dr. Lucy’s hospital, you’ve been there once."
"Why there?"
Hog’s pupils contracted, and he nearly blurted out his question to the other party.
This was his feud with "Dominate," and Dr. Lucy should not be involved.
"I am but the messenger, it said it would meet you there."
Jock didn’t know how to explain himself either, for even in his view, "Dominate" was a person of extremely foul character. Even being on the same side, he detested the various actions the other had taken from the bottom of his heart.
The message had now been delivered.
Jock unilaterally hung up the call; of course, he knew the reason why "Dominate" chose Lucy Hospital.
It was because Hog had experienced a riot together with Lucy, and according to the Anti-Terror Squad members, he had even bravely pushed her away once, saving her from a fate of having her head blown off by a bullet.
The busy tone at the other end of the phone left Hog stunned for a good while.
He hadn’t expected that Lucy would be involved, he hadn’t expected that while he was investigating "Dominate," the other party was also investigating them in return.
He immediately informed Rob Lucci of this message, but before he received a clear reply, Lucy had already sent him a text.
The content of the text was concise, warning him to stay in his room tonight and not to come to the psychiatric hospital under any circumstances.
Following that, she compiled everything she knew into a text message and sent it over.
That wicked Standin ability user had the power to twist minds, it could peer into any secret hidden deep within one’s heart, and therefore... much as she was reluctant, Hog’s ability to stop the entire world’s time for two seconds had been exposed, their strategy of a surprise attack discussed that day was no longer possible.
Beyond that, it had an additional derived ability.
It could turn a dominated person into a controllable time bomb.
At the end of the text message, Lucy once again warned Hog.
Spiritual Energy bombs cannot be disarmed, and the other’s intent was clear, the moment Hog approached her, the other would detonate the bomb, then anyone who approached her would be blown to smithereens.
Lucy stood by the window, and even though she was extremely anxious inside, she still suppressed her intense fear and her index finger danced rapidly over the phone screen. She didn’t know why the other would give her the chance to tip him off after telling her all this, but she had to make good use of this opportunity.
For them, the only way to defeat the other was to first figure out how to hide, and based on the abilities the other had exposed, carefully consider tactics to restrain them.
"He will come."
When all the text messages were edited, the devil’s Whisper echoed again in Lucy’s ears, "He’s coming for me, no matter what is waiting for him here."
Even if it was a blatantly obvious trap, Hog would still throw himself into it like a moth to a flame.
That came from its intuition.
"Hog is a rational man..."
Lucy wanted to say something to keep herself calm, but the roar of the hovering cars outside the psychiatric hospital made her heart sink even further.
Hog hadn’t just arrived, he had rushed over immediately after receiving the texts, barely five minutes had passed since she sent the first message.
The demonic Whisper chuckled in her ear, "It seems I understand the human heart better than you, a psychiatrist."
Lucy watched the hovering car park below the building.
A silhouette burst out of the hovering car and headed straight for the hospital.
She wished time could slow down, to think of a countermeasure, but soon she heard the sound of the elevator, the urgent footsteps over to the door, followed by frantic knocking.
Not to open the door, to pretend not to be home, so Hog might consider the text messages a prank.
Lucy even had such naive thoughts.
But once again, her resisting body uncontrollably walked towards the door, step by step, opening the security door that she had locked tightly.
The room was dark, and following the dim moonlight, Lucy saw Hog, drenched in sweat.
Although he had prosthetic bodies and underwent routine life-extension maintenance every month, for an old man, this was still a considerable expenditure of physical and mental energy.
"Where is it?"
The moment the door opened, Hog immediately asked.
In his hand was only a pistol, coming alone without any backup.
Even "Dominate" was taken aback. Although Jock had informed it that the Foster Family no longer had any Six Stars rescuer to sit in, as the current head of the family, Hog Foster shouldn’t be without a single decent bodyguard, right?
It instinctively used its Spiritual Energy for perception, and the spread out energy had long enveloped every corner of the hospital, but the search results forced it to believe everything it was seeing.
Hog had really come alone.
"Didn’t I warn you not to come?"
Lucy said in dejection.
She clenched her fists, not seeing any possibility of turning the situation around.
Right now, Hog was already within the range of the Spiritual Energy bomb, according to what the demon had said, its customized Spiritual Energy bomb was just right to blow up the entire building.
"Now’s not the time to say such things!"
Hog’s hand forcefully came to rest on Lucy’s shoulder, indeed, it was a risky decision, but he had already informed Mr. Lucky before he left, now they should be on their way here.
For now, all they needed to do was to buy time, and to seek the most suitable moment for Mr. Lucky.
Thinking this, Hog raised his voice to make it loud enough to reach every dark corner of the room, "I am here, show yourself."
