Chapter 667: Chapter 667: Future_1
When the next morning arrived, a sumptuous breakfast was delivered to the Consortium hospital.
Smelling the fragrance of the food, the Head Maid and Jasmine suddenly felt an unreal sensation, as if they were not actually there. If it had not been for the sight of the destroyed castle still visible outside, they might have thought that Song Lan was still the unworldly cook from before.
"Is this part of your practice?"
Jasmine joked, "Even when there is no need for concealment or disguise, you still play the part of a real cook?"
"One of my seniors once told me that the most skillful method of infiltration is to make the identity you’re infiltrating part of your own life... Eat up while it’s hot. The first floor of the kitchen is still operational, and all these ingredients were rescued overnight."
Song Lan did not refuse anyone.
All the "patients" who happened to pass by joined them, including Isabella and Franthing.
Isabella had not slept well all night. She had seen her mother before dawn, crying in Ms. Kalida’s arms like a little girl who had not grown up, but her mother had to replace her father in taking charge of the overall situation. The knights who were well organized volunteered to act as laborers and began the plan to rebuild the castle.
At this, Song Lan could only express his helplessness.
He could destroy the fortress of the Iris Consortium, but changing the ingrained thoughts of people was harder than reaching the heavens. Even many residents of the second district saw this as an opportunity, eagerly throwing themselves into the reconstruction effort, seeing it as a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
Perhaps the Iris Consortium would remember their contributions, acknowledge their efforts, and after the reconstruction was complete, provide them with an opportunity to change their lives.
Most of the people in the second district sprang into action, vigorously rebuilding everything that once loomed over their heads, or perhaps they were still fantasizing about becoming part of the privileged class.
Song Lan felt that what they really needed might be a thought leader standing in the city square.
They ran everywhere, shouting everywhere.
Then, after experiencing the struggle through blood and fire, their numb souls might be moved.
But this clearly wasn’t his responsibility. Song Lan never made things hard for himself. Since the people of the second district had made their choice, he would only respect the actions of the citizens, and after preparing breakfast for everyone, he would comfortably lie under the sun for a day.
The civil war from the day before had also been a huge drain on him, especially since after the end of the civil war they had almost spent the whole night looking for "Dominate", which left him without a wink of sleep. And in order to serve a steaming hot breakfast to the leaders, he had gone to the kitchen before dawn, assembling the idle AIs to prepare breakfast.
"Hey, you, cook!"
Franthing, holding a steaming hot bun, exchanged a glance with the Head Maid and suddenly turned on Song Lan, "Did you put hot pepper skins in my bun again? You’re trying to poison me, aren’t you? I won’t let this go lightly, absolutely not!"
This man was insane.
Isabella was startled by Franthing’s behavior.
Franthing was trying to provoke a secret agent from CP0 who could squash him with one hand.
More importantly, these things called buns weren’t spicy at all. Warm in the stomach and paired with the sweet aftertaste of sweet porridge, they actually made her heart momentarily settled.
But when she saw him staring at Song Lan with red eyes and an unyielding gaze, her heart suddenly filled with mixed emotions.
A few days ago, Franthing Monk was undoubtedly one of the people she detested the most, to the point where she could become so angry she couldn’t eat or sleep.
However, when she heard that the core members of the Monk Family had been wiped out by a Spiritual Energy bomb, she did not feel as gleeful as she had expected.
Compared to the Gilvez family, perhaps the Monk family was the one that had truly lost everything in this civil war.
And when Franthing recovered and left the Consortium hospital, what awaited him outside were not his Personal Guard flocking around him.
Those loyal knights who had sworn fealty to him either died from the Spiritual Energy bomb or in the subsequent rebellion. What awaited him outside were the people who had betrayed them once and had personally handed him over to Colin Capello.
"You shouldn’t make such baseless accusations!"
A loud voice overpowered Franthing’s, as the vulture’s body swelled up, his amber eyes glaring fiercely at Franthing, looking like he was about to bite a chunk out of him, "Mr. Lucky never put chili peppers in the stuffing, I’ve been by his side the whole time!"
She had tasted all the meat fillings herself.
For Yeying, the biggest advantage of having her identity revealed was that she no longer had to hide her voracious appetite, eating as much as she wanted in the kitchen.
If Franthing kept talking nonsense, she was determined to show this ignorant and tender-skinned young man who’s boss!
In her list, Franthing was the second most delicious person to eat.
Just behind the even better-nourished Miss Isabella.
"Yes, I did," Song Lan said, leaving Yeying stunned. Whenever he lowered his face, it would bring immense pressure to those around him, "You really are completely lack of vigilance, daring to accept food from an enemy. On the battlefield, you wouldn’t know how many times you would have died already."
"Eh? When did that happen!?"
Yeying’s small head was filled with big question marks.
The Head Maid lowered her eyes.
She knew that Song Lan was lying.
The bun in Franthing’s hand was the same as theirs, without any "additives", and she also understood why Franthing suddenly directed his accusations at Song Lan.
Franthing was one year younger than Isabella and had lost all his relatives in this civil war. When Ms. Kalida came to visit the young miss, he was next door in the hospital room, peeking through the crack of the door, spying on the activity outside.
But he could not cry in front of his mother like the young miss did.
"You..."
Franthing was at a loss for words.
He had not expected Song Lan, whom he had falsely accused, to say such a thing.
"Listen well, this is a lesson for you. Next time it won’t be as simple as running to the bathroom with snot and tears."
"You remember this!"
Clenching his teeth, Franthing clutched his stomach and beat a hasty retreat, but not before he picked up the unfinished bowl of sweet porridge. The spicy bun that had brought tears to his eyes, he treasured like a precious gift and took it with him.
"Thank you."
Long after Franthing had fled, the Head Maid suddenly said in a low voice.
Then everyone ate their breakfast without comment. Only Yeying was left standing on the floor, looking around with a heart full of suspicion, wondering when exactly Song Lan had managed to sneak the chili oil into the bun Franthing was eating without her noticing.
After breakfast, they received some good news.
After careful analysis of the mind control device, Dr. Bai Zhu finally overcame the firewall of the conceptual armament. It wouldn’t be long before she could remove the instructions left in Rose’s brain by the device and return her to normal.
"What are your plans for the future?"
As Jasmine and Song Lan left Rose’s hospital room, she asked.
It came as a surprise to her that δ’s evaluation of this CP0 agent had done an about-turn. Before the outbreak of the civil war, it had warned her to stay as far away from him as possible, indicating that nothing good would come from any relationship; yet in the hours before dawn, it classed Song Lan as someone they could cooperate with.
Jasmine knew very well that their combined strength was far from enough when faced with an unknown group and criminals as vicious as "Dominate."
"The Worms’ likely target is all other Six Stars rescuers, and they may have already replaced the high-ranking officials of companies or families now controlling the authority to deploy Six Stars rescuers."
While not all Six Stars rescuers had backdoor privileges set by research institutions, without intelligence, walking into their set traps could potentially lead to a highly passive situation, "You must have heard of Wild Bone and Yinbo. They were both attacked by unidentified persons recently, and looking back, that might well have been one of their traps."
Luckily, the two prosthetic implantation bearers had their lives spared.
If the damaged chips could be repaired, there was a chance they could be revived.
However, Jasmine was met with silence.
For some reason, she felt the atmosphere of the conversation had suddenly become somewhat awkward.
"...Mr. Lucky?"
"Yes, it should be the work of the Worms."
Song Lan cleared his throat and said, "To prevent a worse situation, we should accelerate the pace of investigation."
"I think so too."
Jasmine nodded, "I want to call an urgent meeting of all Six Stars rescuers and share the findings of my investigation with them."
However, organizing this meeting was fraught with difficulties.
According to the Rescuer Department’s regulations, Six Stars rescuers are only convened together when the United Government faces a crisis that threatens the entire country. If the Worms had infiltrated the Review Meeting, they would stop at nothing to prevent the meeting.
Jasmine could foresee the difficulties of this mission, and politics was not her forte.
In the past, she was accustomed to completing tasks assigned by the Review Meeting. When she realized the Review Meeting’s orders were no longer reliable, she couldn’t help feeling lost about the future.
So before setting out, she decided to exchange ideas with the CP0 agent.
"That’s a good idea."
"By the way, Mr. Lucky... there’s another favor I need to ask of you."
After hesitating for a long time, Jasmine finally made up her mind.
"Hmm?"
"If possible, I hope you can help me with a favor, to free my sister from the control of the Iris Consortium."
During their time in the underground maze, she had learned about those past events and understood that her sister wasn’t so rigid as to offer everything to the consortium willingly; it all originated from her agreement with Richard Gervis.
Now, with Richard’s whereabouts unknown, this was the best chance for her to break free from the consortium.
"I’ll give it a try."
Song Lan said impassively, "Military Intelligence Section Seven would likely welcome the addition of a Six Stars rescuer."
