Chapter 664: Chapter 664: No End to Suffering, Turning Back is the Shore_1
Firelight, crowds, and the flustered Consortium amidst wind and rain.
All before Elizabeth reminded her of the musical dramas she watched as a child, which liked to portray the life of the last aristocrats. It was said that the scripts were treasures left from before the Third War.
She clearly remembered reading a melancholic epic about a fallen aristocrat’s quest for revenge.
The scenes now unfolding were just as described in those musical dramas.
Unlike those fabricated or adapted stories, however, everything around her was truly happening.
Perhaps, she would die like those damsels of the last aristocrats in the scripts. She recalled the Head Maid telling her that the real downfall of true aristocrats was much more tragic than what the scripts depicted.
"Head Maid, will I die?"
Elizabeth was being dragged along by the arm by the Head Maid, rushing through the familiar castle. She could distinctly feel the Head Maid’s poor health, seemingly due to falling from a height.
Her father had been condemned as a Sinner; her mother had to stay at the family estate, facing a war destined for defeat.
"No."
The Head Maid tried to soften her tone. "Miss, you will survive."
"Boom—!"
Another explosion like a clap of thunder streaked across the night sky, causing Elizabeth to almost reflexively scream out loud.
The Head Maid quickly glanced over. "That’s the Monk Family’s estate."
She furrowed her brows; the alliance between Capello and the Monk Family must be a sham. Their real purpose was probably to use the civil war to eliminate all rivals, securing sole control over the Iris Consortium from now on.
The last order Ms. Kalida had given her was to take Elizabeth out of the Second Zone while the civil war was still ongoing.
The lady had never intended to win this civil war from the start.
More troubling, however, was that Elizabeth’s emotions were teetering on the edge of collapse; she had never seen the young lady so utterly lost.
Or perhaps...
This was the truest reflection of a fallen aristocrat.
The Head Maid bit her lip and hastened her pace again.
In her current state, she couldn’t possibly escape from Capello Family’s pursuers with Elizabeth, and as a servant of the family, tracking devices had been planted in her body by the Consortium, so Colin could locate them anytime after the Capello Family won the civil war.
In her desperation, a name surfaced in her mind.
"Head Maid, why are we here...?"
Elizabeth looked up at the desolate Consortium hospital. When the Head Maid reached the hospital door, she leaned on it from exhaustion, which prevented her from collapsing.
The excessive blood loss was numbing her remaining sanity, but before she entered, there was something important she needed to tell Elizabeth in person.
"Miss... this civil war is much more complicated than you imagine. The one who attacked me that night was Lord Richard himself. That’s why I couldn’t resist him."
"...You’re lying."
This sudden news left Elizabeth’s pupils dilated in shock.
"I don’t know what the Capello Family did to him, but the current Lord Richard is not the person you knew anymore."
The night of the attack, as her consciousness was fading, she finally saw the figure lurking in the shadows.
It was Colin Capello’s personal maid.
"I will entrust you to someone I can trust to take you out of the Second Zone. After that... please never return here."
Even Song Lan, who happened to be passing by, was moved by what he saw at the entrance of the Consortium hospital, and he realized just how perilous the position of a Consortium maid was.
Once again, the Head Maid was drenched in blood. In their few encounters, she had always been injured.
At the same time, he had an ominous premonition.
The Head Maid noticed Song Lan behind the door, and with a fleeting glint of hope returning to her dissipating gaze, she summoned her last strength to push the hospital doors open and staggered towards Song Lan, "Mr. Lucky, please wait."
Given the risk of fainting at any moment, she tried to express her intentions as concisely as possible, "The Capello Family has started a war. Staying here is dangerous. I will do everything in my power to help you leave the castle. But I need you to promise me one thing... Please, take Miss Elizabeth out of the Second Zone, preferably away from the United Government, to a place where no one knows her."
She realized how heavy this request was for a chef.
The journey was fraught with danger, with the possibility of being caught by the Capello Family’s Assassin looming at any moment. Moreover, the now powerless Gilvez Family could no longer afford to pay him a hefty fee.
But at the moment, the Head Maid could not find anyone else worthy of her trust.
The Winter Knights, Ms. Kalida, and everything she was doing at that moment were for the sole purpose of ensuring that Elizabeth would survive this civil war.
Logically, Song Lan had never undergone the loyalty test of the Consortium and the families, which undoubtedly made this decision reckless. But this time, she decided to trust her instincts.
An idea struck her, and she retrieved a green gemstone that radiated a brilliant glow, within which faintly shimmered the emblem of the Gilvez Family.
She handed it over to him, "This was given to me by Ms. Kalida. You might find it useful someday."
Isabella’s eyes widened, "The treasured heirloom of this family..."
"Hold on, hold on."
Song Lan took a step back, he had just come downstairs for water, only to be swept into such a heavy atmosphere.
The noble from a fallen aristocracy entrusted the care of his distressed young heiress to him, and from then on, they left the United Government, travelling among various Neutral Countries, desperately evading assassins...
This was clearly not the life he had hoped for.
In his ideal retirement, he would be lying in a comfortable mansion every day, enjoying the air conditioning, living a peaceful and regular life just like a plant.
"I am sorry, but I cannot accept your request."
Both the Head Maid and Isabella were stunned by his decisive refusal. Song Lan pointed outside at the members of the Scarlet Knights who had surrounded the entire building of the Iris Consortium hospital, "Moreover, you probably didn’t notice that you’ve been followed here."
"Impossible, only family members know our whereabouts."
"That would indicate that even the people from your family cannot be trusted."
They could have been replaced by Worms or, to save their own lives in the civil war, they may have defected to the Capello Family.
Among the crowd, Song Lan saw a familiar face.
The Scarlet Lord apparently wanted Song Lan to recognize him, deliberately removing his helmet, and from afar flashed his consistently ugly and ferocious smile at those inside.
He gestured to the crowd, and the Knight Group immediately cleared a path.
Following that, a person screaming in pain was personally brought into the Iris Consortium hospital by the Scarlet Lord himself.
The one he brought in was also one of the new friends Song Lan had made in the castle over the past few days.
"It seems our dear Franthing Monk-Monk heir urgently needs a remedy."
The accompanying knights threw a blood-soaked Franthing heavily onto the floor, "After all, he is now the sole heir to the Monk Family lineage."
"You despicable scoundrels, I will not let you go!"
Franthing glared, his eyes bloodshot, and roared on the floor.
Not long ago, the core members of the Monk Family had come together for a meeting regarding an alliance with the Capello Family.
Just then, a Personal Guard burst into the meeting room like a human bomb, destroying the entire chamber.
All the family members were killed on the spot, while Franthing, suffering from diarrhea, had just gone downstairs to the bathroom and thus narrowly escaped the disaster. However, before he could assemble the Knight Group, the Lord who owed them allegiance had launched a rebellion, and the few remaining Personal Guard members were incapable of ensuring his safety.
Franthing was soon captured by the Rebel Army and then presented to the Capello Family like war booty.
"Miss, I just happened to overhear your conversation; there’s no need to be so pessimistic. Young Master Colin is benevolent and has decided to grant you a way to live," said the knight who stepped on the struggling Franthing, silencing him.
After the Scarlet Lord took control of the situation, Colin Capello finally presented himself before everyone. His voice alone filled the hall as his fiery gaze indiscreetly surveyed Isabella, "I have specially arranged a place for you to survive from now on... Have you heard? There’s a bar outside the castle where you might be able to find a decent job."
Despair descended upon the crowd.
Then, his gaze shifted to the swaying Head Maid, "As for you, I promised the most loyal Lord that you would become their spoils of war."
The war seemed to have reached its ending, Colin could hardly conceal his excitement. Now before him were no longer the competitors for power but the spoils waiting to be distributed by the victor.
"And him."
Suddenly, the Scarlet Lord turned his spearhead towards the silent Song Lan, "I reminded you that should you break our agreement, I would find you."
At these words, a shadow hidden in the darkness charged excitedly through the crowd to land on Song Lan’s shoulder.
Yeying stood there silently, not saying a word, but her amber-colored pupils shone like spotlights.
She felt that perhaps the Scarlet Lord was only somewhat ugly; he actually had a heart of gold.
He had even spared no effort to provide her with extra meals, despite not having eaten well himself during this time.
Those spotlight-like eyes swept over the helmets of each knight present.
Confronted with this scene, Song Lan could only sigh resignedly, "And I’ve also told you, there’s no end to suffering, but turning back leads to salvation."
History kept repeating itself before him, his new friends always ignored his earnest advice.
"Head Maid, I had a reason for turning you down earlier."
He stepped forward, standing between the two parties, "Sorry for deceiving you earlier, I am not a chef, but a secret agent from Military Intelligence Section Seven, CP0."
While speaking, he looked directly into Colin Capello’s eyes. Although he knew hope was slim, he still harbored a sliver of it and said, "I hope you will all do me the honor of ending this farce here."
Song Lan sincerely hoped that Lu Xiang would understand he was truly trying to save his friends who had lost their way.
Unfortunately, many of his friends were in too deep.
Always leaving him to reluctantly, and with a heavy heart, send them to a better place.
