Chapter 624: Chapter 624: The Perpetrator Plays the Victim First - Part 1
"What? You want to meet someone from the Morger Family?"
When Song Lan made the request, Guan Lili could hardly believe her ears, "Do you think your life’s too long that you want to deal with the Morger Family? Do you know what they do?"
"They run an energy company."
"Hah, an energy company."
Guan Lili scoffed disdainfully. A family that runs an energy company wouldn’t be able to make the big corporations and families in the core area shun them out of fear, not to mention avoiders from the Polaris Alliance’s rescuers, who are reluctant to deal with these lunatics.
However, for the United Government, the Morger Family’s involvement in the "outside" forbidden drug industry was one of the important means to control the Neutral Country. As long as the Morger Family didn’t stir up some irreparable trouble, the United Government would turn a blind eye to their actions.
"I heard that they deal with forbidden drugs on the side."
"Oh, you know they’re in that business? Let me tell you this, a few months ago, the Morger Family killed a three-star rescuer who opposed them in District Three. Later, they managed to smooth over the incident, and not a ripple was caused."
One must know, murdering a rescuer is a grave crime within the United Government, especially when it’s a three-star rescuer.
Even Guan Lili didn’t expect that the Morger Family now had such capability, to the point of not taking rescuers seriously.
She composed herself and asked, "First tell me what you know about them. Are you looking to cross them?"
"How could that be? I’ve just caught wind of some rumors that someone wants to cross them."
"Is the source of the information reliable?"
On hearing this, Guan Lili’s expression changed, and she grew serious.
"It should be reliable."
After pondering for a moment, she said, "The company doesn’t have much of a relationship with the Morger Family, and we don’t have business dealings with Sea-Land Energy either. I can only ask around for you, but as for whether they’re willing to see you or not, I don’t have the final say... Ferren Morger, if I recall correctly, that should be the name of their person in charge in District Seventeen."
"It can’t be him. Do you have any way to find out the contact details for the higher-ups in the Morger Family?"
"Where would I get such contact information?"
Guan Lili complained irritably. Moreover, she didn’t want the contact details of such dangerous individuals, "You’re not satisfied with Ferren Morger? He’s a core member of the Morger Family, maybe he doesn’t even want to see you."
She realized Song Lan always managed to bring her some new trouble every now and then.
If possible, she preferred that Song Lan focus his efforts on playing the role of a war hero.
Their current shooting hadn’t made any substantial progress, and in some time, the public’s enthusiasm for the war hero and the Great Expedition might cool down.
"If not, then I’ll ask someone else."
"Wait, do you really have something important?"
"Hmm."
Song Lan’s sincere gaze softened Guan Lili’s heart once again, and she realized she has changed her decision for him time and again, despite knowing full well that he couldn’t be helped.
Was it because he had shown concern for her in the car, reminding her to rest?
No.
Guan Lili quickly dismissed such an absurd thought.
Now, all she wanted was to wrap up the work in District Seventeen as fast as possible, leave this godforsaken place, then board a private jet to the city where Qi He was, and confront him about the kind of oddball he had asked her to look after.
"I can make a call for you, but you have to promise me something."
"Go ahead."
"During the filming later, don’t bring me any more troubles!"
"I really didn’t mean to."
Song Lan felt that Guan Lili might have misunderstood him. Although he was reluctant to draw attention on camera, he truly hadn’t intended to embarrass Guan Lili.
As the saying goes, everyone makes mistakes, and shooting is prone to accidents.
"Yeah, right. I believe that."
Guan Lili, with a face full of disdain, dialed a number in front of Song Lan. Judging by her manner of speaking, the person on the other end of the phone was likely her superior.
After a moment’s thought, Song Lan figured that Guan Lili’s role in the company was the director of the public relations department, one of the most crucial departments. The only people who could hold authority over her were probably members of the "Polaris Alliance" council.
She briefly relayed Song Lan’s idea to the person on the phone. However, as the conversation progressed, her expression grew uglier. Facing a high-ranking official, she had to be exceedingly respectful, but the look she gave Song Lan was as if she was spitting fire.
The call lasted nearly a quarter of an hour, starting with Guan Lili making a request, then shifting to the leader assigning tasks, and her occasionally acknowledging the orders.
"Are you happy now?"
The instant she hung up the phone, Guan Lili asked through gritted teeth.
She really wanted to pounce on Song Lan and strangle him, demanding if he was sent by a rival company to sabotage them.
"Your leader rejected the request? If they don’t agree, they don’t agree, no need to give someone a dressing down, right?"
"And you’re still playing dumb with me."
"Huh?"
"Tell me honestly, why do you want to contact the high-ranking officials of the Morger Family?"
"Because I heard some rumors detrimental to them and wanted to give them a heads up."
"Rumors, huh?"
Seeing that Song Lan was adamant, Guan Lili got tired of beating around the bush and said, "I also have a piece of gossip. Why would Ferren Morger say that the Law Enforcers are out to harm him?"
"What? Who’s out to harm him?"
Song Lan was shocked, sitting bolt upright in his chair.
Where did such a rumor come from?
They hadn’t even seen Ferren Morger, so how could they be plotting to harm him?
Yes, even if they might actually have to target him in the days to come, nothing had been revealed yet. How could one make such an accusation without proof?
"Still trying to put on a show? Ferren even submitted a personal protection request to the main offices of Hailu Energy last night. What are you up to?"
"Up to what?"
"This is an internal clause of the Morger Family, only invoked by core family members who feel their life is in imminent danger and seek protection. The Morger Family is probably already on their way to Sector 17 by now. Didn’t you want to meet them? It won’t be long before you get your chance."
"This must be a rumor."
"Whether it’s a rumor or not isn’t important. What’s important is that Ferren Morger, a core member of the Morger Family, thinks you’re out to harm him. He even specifically reported Lu Xiang’s name to the family."
Guan Lili took a deep breath. Coupled with the fact that Song Lan had suddenly come to her today, suspiciously asking for contact information for the Morger Family’s higher-ups, she could only conclude that Lu Xiang must have offended the Morger Family in some way.
The whole Morger Family was well-known for being petty.
"If you tell me the truth now, I might still be able to mediate for you. If it really is a misunderstanding, it’s best to clarify it. You definitely wouldn’t want to see the Morger Family’s methods."
Hearing this, Song Lan finally understood.
It wasn’t that they had leaked information, but the Parasitic Worm inhabiting Ferren Morger had realized its identity might have been exposed and decided to strike first, aiming to use the Morger Family to go after them.
