Chapter 616: Chapter 616: Your Scent_1
"Need a ride on my bike?"
As Lu Xiang jogged to the entrance of the yard, Song Lan was standing next to his bicycle, waiting for her arrival, when he made the offer.
"No, thanks, I still have a pile of documents on my desk, and I need to get back to them later."
Lu Xiang politely declined, standing on the other side of the silver-gray bicycle, she took the initiative to walk forward.
Song Lan nodded and, pushing his bicycle alongside, moved forwards, "Well, let’s walk then. Work should always be balanced with rest."
"I didn’t expect your side to wrap things up so quickly. The company didn’t give you the runaround, did they?"
Lu Xiang glanced at Song Lan without changing her expression, "What did their promotional campaign director say?"
"Guan Lili said the company has no leads either, and if there’s any development, she would contact me immediately."
"Hmm, got it."
Lu Xiang said meaningfully, before skillfully changing the subject, "Although you can’t get out of the shoot, you should keep your distance from her. Don’t let her take advantage of you, or I’ll be able to smell her perfume on you instantly."
"Don’t worry."
"Good, tell me, why did you come looking for me at the station in the middle of the day instead of going home? Don’t you want to take a break anymore?"
"No, just seeing if I could be of any help. How’s that mother and son who reported a case last night? Any new leads discovered?"
Song Lan casually steered the conversation back to the Southeast Bank robbery. "Her husband is a network security engineer at Southeast Bank, and a direct case suspect. She must have noticed something before the incident occurred."
"No useful leads at all."
Lu Xiang sighed, saying helplessly, "The perpetrators disguised themselves well; they didn’t show any abnormalities before they made their move. She seems to still believe that her husband is innocent, saying that he couldn’t possibly betray the company and must have been coerced by the robbers."
"So... what do you think?"
"We rely on the evidence to reveal the objective truth."
As they spoke, Lu Xiang and Song Lan simultaneously stopped in their tracks.
To the left of the road was a secluded alley. During the previous chief of the Law Enforcers’ term, this had been a meeting place with criminals like Chai Ke. Gang members, prohibited drug dealers, pimps, and middlemen had long been entrenched here. One of the first things Lu Xiang did after taking office was to take down this hideout that was closest to the Law Enforcers’ department.
Today, the alley was thoroughly abandoned, but due to the numerous violent incidents that had taken place here in the past, citizens still avoided it, fearful of venturing inside.
Almost as soon as they stopped, a woman’s scream echoed from the alley, followed by the sound of something heavy hitting the ground.
Lu Xiang could tell from the sound alone that it must have been a water pipe hitting the ground, and upon hearing the scream and cries for help, the justice-minded Song Lan immediately dropped his bicycle and charged into the alley without hesitation.
When Lu Xiang arrived shortly after, she saw a beautiful woman with a bloody face crouching in a corner. The fight between Song Lan and the thugs had already escalated intensely. Even outnumbered, he showed no fear, trading punches with the burly thugs.
Lu Xiang admitted that she almost laughed out loud the moment she saw Song Lan grappling with the thugs.
Standing on the sidelines, she could only assess that Song Lan was quite agile, seemingly well-versed in combat skills, but in order not to further tarnish his image in her eyes, she had to call out, "Old Sa, get to work."
Song Lan and the thugs were stunned by the sudden appearance of figures emerging from the shadows, and the tide of the battle immediately turned one-sided when these figures wielding thermal cutting blades joined the fray.
These men...
Were absolutely not Law Enforcers!
Because from the moment they struck, it was evident they weren’t aiming to take prisoners.
The searing blades instantly decapitated the thugs, impaled their bodies, and in no time, the alley turned into a hell on earth with limbs and blood splattered everywhere. Even the beautiful woman with a bloody face wasn’t spared; someone grabbed her by the neck, and as she attempted to resist, a thermal cutting blade plunged in from her chin.
It all happened in the blink of an eye.
Song Lan stopped in the midst of the brawl, frozen in place, his face and clothes soaked with blood. It wasn’t until the gangsters lay dismembered in pools of blood that he finally snapped out of his reverie.
"Lu Xiang, they are..."
"Oh, you don’t recognize them, do you?"
Lu Xiang, expressionless, wiped the splattered blood off her face with her index finger and said, "Song Lan, he is Samuel. You can call him Old Sa, Old Sa, this is Song Lan. Get to know each other."
Song Lan looked at the mess on the ground, then turned his head to the middle-aged man beside him who was dressed like a homeless person.
"Old..."
"Bang—!"
His knees buckled as a bullet pierced through his kneecap. Disbelieving, he turned his gaze to Lu Xiang, who, with a furrowed brow, had already reached his side. She stepped on his shoulder with one foot, pinning him to the blood-stained ground, immobilized.
At that moment, he finally understood.
This was a trap.
It was just that the person who had fallen into the trap was not Lu Xiang, but...
"How did you know?"
Song Lan stared down the dark barrel of the gun, asking resentfully.
Although he couldn’t directly extract all of the genetic samples and thought memories, to play the role well, he had thoroughly investigated everything about Song Lan. His current disguise should have been identical to Song Lan, to the point that even he himself would not have been able to recognize it.
"You want to know?"
Lu Xiang raised an eyebrow.
The person lying on the ground gritted his teeth and nodded.
"You smell different. I could tell just by the scent," she casually told him. This imposter, who thought himself flawless, was actually full of holes. His slip-ups in less than fifteen minutes would have been enough for Lu Xiang to lecture for a whole class. However, Lu Xiang didn’t want to waste her time on them. Moreover, seeing this familiar face now kindled a nameless anger in her.
"Bang, bang, bang—!"
The gun continuously spit out flames, stopping only after emptying an entire magazine of bullets.
Lu Xiang looked indifferently at the "corpse" that no longer moved and said, "Old Sa, find the worm and send it to Medea to have a look."
Meanwhile, the voice of another unwelcome visitor came from the entrance of the alley.
—"Old Sa, Old Lu, I heard from Xiao Tun that you were here..."
Time seemed to freeze at that moment.
The youth carrying a plastic bag had not anticipated everything that had happened in the alley. He stopped in his tracks, stunned on the spot.
He looked from a distance at the "corpse" whose head had been blown open, wearing the same clothes as him. Beside it, Lu Xiang’s pant leg was stained with blood.
His shocked gaze shifted to Lu Xiang’s face, whose cold expression also changed.
It became a mix of embarrassment and shyness.
They locked eyes for a full ten seconds before Lu Xiang suddenly realized something and smoothly tucked away the "weapon" in her hand.
"Xiao Tun said you were here... What were you doing here again?"
After a long silence, Song Lan finally stuttered out the words that had reached his lips before.
