Chapter 615: Chapter 615: Law Enforcers Will Protect You from Illegal Harm_1
Song Lan was very satisfied with Engle’s cooperative attitude.
Once again, it proved that sincerity could be met with sincerity—he always advocated treating people with honesty.
Of course, if their new friend refused to cooperate, Song Lan had a backup plan ready.
Before speaking, Song Lan gave a meaningful look toward Yeying at the kitchen window, who, after staring eagerly into the house for a long time, reluctantly hid back into the shadows.
He sat down in the chair opposite Engle and asked, "I just want to know what the deal is with those human skins—why are you so sure they have nothing to do with Guan Lili or the company?"
"You really want to investigate?"
"Really."
"Then remember, I tried to warn you."
Engle took a deep breath with a mix of frustration and empathy, thinking that Song Lan’s resolute attitude must be related to Lu Xiang, and that the Law Enforcers department was now thoroughly investigating the robbery at Southeast Bank.
Having made his statement clear, he didn’t intend to back out now and said, "The skins you found in the sewage pipe are the byproduct of a creature that looks like worms eating away at them."
"What kind of worms? Be more specific."
"I don’t know where they come from, but I do know they first parasitize the human body. After they extract the host’s genetic material, they can completely disguise themselves as the host. Those killed by them are eventually found in this state."
"How do you know? Have you seen these worms before?"
"It was that damned expedition! Before coming to District 17, I took on a case to salvage my reputation—at a company’s behest—it was a bank robbery too. Those company dogs told me the target was just a local gang with no significant influence."
As a Five Stars rescuer, he was more than capable of dealing with some gang riffraff.
"Following the company-provided address, I found the bank robbers’ hideout. Initially, things went smoothly; as the company said, the bank robbers weren’t particularly skilled, at best they had some military training. But when I had cleared the scene and was about to call the filming crew, those freaks started coming back to life one after another!"
Engle’s voice became agitated, "Even those with their heads cut off by an energy blade came back to life—can you imagine?"
For the Bug Swarm, this wasn’t particularly remarkable.
Song Lan asked curiously, "So, you ran away?"
"How could I? It took me dozens of attempts to finally stop these freaks from reviving," Engle stated.
Had it been before, he might have run indeed, but now, in the low point of his life, he didn’t want to miss any opportunity for redemption. So he persevered, despite the nausea and panic, repeatedly killing those endlessly reviving freaks.
"When they stopped reviving, I got careless. One of the worms seized the opportunity when I wasn’t paying attention, shot out from under a corpse, burrowed into my body, and then I started seeing hallucinations. I thought I saw a world built of flesh, where something was staring at me. I heard it say it would find me sooner or later."
The villa fell silent as Engle narrated.
The fear rooted deep in his heart surged up again. He couldn’t describe with words the extremity of horror of that world, nor the terrifying creatures that lived in it. The mere thought of it made Engle start to feel suffocated.
"Where did you encounter it?" Song Lan’s expression also grew grave because the scene Engle described highly resembled what he had seen through The Archbishop and the First Army Corp commander.
"District 3."
Engle seemed a bit dazed, his eyes glazed as he stared out the window, as if something lay hidden behind the drawn curtain.
Engle continued, "I shouldn’t be telling you what happened next, but who knows? Maybe I’ll be dead tomorrow... Listen carefully, when I woke up, I was already in the hospital. The information about the worms was divulged by a rescuer named Jasmine. You might not know who she is, and there’s no need to delve into her identity. All you need to know is that Jasmine was the first to discover these worms, and she’s been investigating it ever since."
Engle had been parasitized by the worms too.
But, looking on the bright side, maybe Jasmine had found some way to extract those worms from his body.
However, District 3?
Song Lan had assumed that the worms were somehow brought back to District 17 by the Bug Swarm from within the Neutral Country’s borders, but according to the timeline, what Engle mentioned happened before Song Lan’s encounter with the collective consciousness, and Jasmine’s investigation seemed to be an ongoing matter.
Engle’s behavior grew even more erratic as he began to mutter to himself, "Maybe I was the one who brought these worms to District 17. It said it would definitely find me. Running is useless now..."
"Wake up, Mr. Engle," Song Lan patted his shoulder, "It’s not time to give up yet."
He felt terror alone wasn’t enough to demoralize a Five Stars rescuer to this extent; it had to be some unknown influence the collective consciousness had on Engle’s mind after the parasitic infestation.
The call had an effect.
Engle looked up blankly at Song Lan, and after a moment, his eyes finally regained clarity.
Song Lan then took an electronic business card from the inside pocket of his clothes and gave it to Engle as a reciprocal gesture, "As long as you are in District 17, you can dial this number."
"This is..."
Engle focused on the phone number on the electronic card, his mind filled with countless speculations.
After all, District 17 was not a simple city.
He suddenly recalled the recent uproar about the Void incident. Could this be the contact method for the Void Investigation Bureau or perhaps the real support behind Lu Xiang?
"This is the emergency hotline for the Law Enforcers’ department in District 17," Song Lan explained, "Please be aware that if you encounter any illegal infringement in District 17, you can dial this number at any time. The Law Enforcers will protect your personal and property safety."

Meanwhile, in the office, Lu Xiang seemed to sense something suddenly.
She temporarily put down the case files on her desk and followed the feeling to the window.
Looking down from the window, a familiar face was standing in the courtyard, looking up at her office window.
Seeing Lu Xiang, the person in the yard smiled slightly and waved at her, mouthing the words, "I’ll be waiting for you at the courtyard gate."
After speaking, he pushed his familiar silver-gray bicycle and headed toward the direction of the courtyard gate.
