Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Don’t Trust Anyone_1

Valerian, a former crime analysis personnel, adeptly unraveled the message the mayor wanted to send to them.

However, Song Lan hadn’t expected a simple psychological consultation to turn into the current state of events.

Meanwhile, Valerian continued to demonstrate her professional skills. As she flipped the tablet, new text appeared:

"Director, you mentioned this was a task delegated by Ophir to Director Lu."

"Perhaps it isn’t a coincidence. The mayor seems to have information for Director Lu, but couldn’t convey his thoughts directly."

"He might be under surveillance."

And the encrypted data within the mayor’s database was the actual message he wanted to pass on to Director Lu or the Law Enforcers department.

This implies that the mayor may not have lost his sanity due to stress but is acutely conscious of something happening in his house.

Swallowing her saliva, Valerian opened the encrypted documents.

The document wasn’t filled with dense text, but rather short narrative sections:

"Woke up in the middle of the night to unusual noises. Someone seemed to have entered my study. The next day, the security head investigated the footage, didn’t find any suspicious individuals. We’re in a time of crisis - I’ve ramped up security in the entire premises."

"Extra security personnel stationed at my bedroom door. There’s this lad named Colin."

"Colin’s gaze is peculiar; vacant, listless. Something odd about his scent. Takes him several calls to respond - who brought him in? Is he even alive?"

"Colin was bitten by a dog. The dog went berserk at the sight of him. In the ensuing chaos, our guards had to shoot the frenzied dog. I’ve decided to give Colin an extended holiday."

"Why isn’t Colin’s wound bleeding? Could this impoverished lad afford prosthetic implantation surgery?"

"The security chief says Colin never underwent any such procedure. Something seems off."

"Colin has been fired. Two other individuals replaced him at the bedroom door."

"Where did they hire these people from? Each one of them is lethargic, exactly like Colin!"

"The security chief has been bitten too — it’s on the leg. He thinks the dog that was put down earlier transmitted some peculiar disease. When he reported, he hadn’t had time to attend to the wound yet. But he didn’t seem to be in pain. The pierced ankle had a few punctures, only oozing thick, dark-red blood."

"The guards seem to be growing listless — is it an infectious disease?"

"Something’s off. The way the guards look at me sends chills down my spine. I’ll replace the lot of them tomorrow."

"What do you mean the imminent election could bring negative press?"

"Heard strange noises from my study again. Two people whispering."

"Can’t trust the secretary!"

"The secretary says she’ll get the best psychiatrist from district seventeen."

"Can’t trust the secretary!"

"I should start preparing case notes."

"Can’t trust the secretary!"

"Perhaps it’s just stress recently."

"Can’t trust the secretary!"

"Don’t drink the water she brings!"

"Have a meeting tomorrow, should get some rest. Everything will be better."

That’s where the text in the database ended.

"Thump, thump, thump."

The abrupt knock startled the trio. Before they could respond, the secretary pushed the door open. Her left hand carried a tray with three cups of lemon water. Bending over, she calmly placed the cups of water in front of them and said, "Please enjoy."

"No, thank you."

Roger waved his hand, gathered the scattered files Valerian had flipped through, and placed them back in the folder. "Actually, after our discussion, we’ve made a judgement concerning the mayor’s current condition. No need to worry, there’s nothing grave with him. It’s merely due to immense pressure combined with chronic sleep deprivation which greatly affects a person’s mental state."

The secretary pulled out her phone, opened the notes app, and carefully wrote down Roger’s instructions.

If we hadn’t read the mayor’s account in the database, anyone would think of the secretary was a good subordinate genuinely concerned for her boss’ health.

The latter part of the database revealed the mayor’s mental state was likely extremely unstable. Not only were there many contradictions, but it seemed like he had forgotten much of what he’d written earlier, hence frequently reminding himself about the peculiarities within the premises.

While Roger was standing upright with a stern face, Song Lan feared him unfolding a ’Truth is singular’ monologue.

Thankfully, his subordinates, righteous as they were, were not fools. They knew how dangerous it would be to make bold speeches before armed security personnel.

"Hmm, noted. Is there anything else you’d like to add?"

"Have you heard of daydreaming?"

"Daydreaming?"

"The human body is fascinating. It sometimes employs self-protection mechanisms. For instance, when someone suffers chronic sleep deprivation and reaches a point of mental breakdown, they may unexpectedly fall asleep. However, during such sleep, the insomniac’s brain continues to function, resulting in bizarre dreams. These dreams can seem like reality to the individual, which might be why the mayor thinks there are issues with the security team."

"I see."

The secretary diligently noted down the theory of daydreaming. From her expression, it was clear she was satisfied with Roger’s explanation.

"In a nutshell, the mayor’s condition isn’t severe but requires vigilance. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to serious mental illnesses. Henceforth, please ensure the mayor gets plenty of sleep every day; use sleep medication if necessary."

"Thank you for your assistance."

"You’re welcome, it’s our duty."

Roger seized control of the conversation, got up, and passed over the lemon water that the secretary had "thoughtfully" prepared for the three of them. "I’ve left a written statement on the table. If there should ever be a need, feel free to contact us."

He made it clear he was leaving.

Song Lan instantly understood and got up, "You’re busier than us; we won’t keep you. We’ll be leaving first."

A flash of displeasure flickered across the secretary’s face as she glanced at the untouched cups of lemon water on the table.

However, she swiftly disguised her emotions. "Let me escort you out."
