Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Election Day_1
Song Lan had not expected in a million years that their patient would be the current mayor of District 17. Previously, he had only seen this name in news reports.
The main reason this name gave him a knot in the stomach was because the entire commission from start to finish exuded an air of conspiracy.
The current mayor of District 17 had a psychological illness and, for some reason, couldn’t go to a hospital for consultation. As a result, they had to pass the task of hiring a psychological consultant to the most well-known information broker in District 17.
Song Lan went through the chain of events again, each time finding it more bizarre.
Why didn’t the mayor go directly to Lu Xiang, or quietly send a secretary to the hospital to invite the top psychological consultants to his home?
Soon, in the documentation prepared by the secretary, Song Lan found the answer to this question.
With the election day due next month, the mayor was making every effort to prepare for his reelection. If word got out about his psychological health issues at this point, it would likely have an extremely detrimental effect on the election, even potentially becoming a weapon for competitors to attack him.
According to the United Government’s system, elections for mayoral incumbency happen every three years, during which candidates frequently give speeches to canvass votes. Even though Song Lan wasn’t sure whether the votes of ordinary people like them would be subject to shadowy manipulation, the form of casting votes would definitely occur.
During the election period, the city is usually at its liveliest as well.
"A decline in mental state, leading to hallucinations?"
After perusing the documents handed by the secretary, Roger furrowed his brows. The information given in the diagnosis result section of the document seemed highly amateurish, like it was thoughtlessly written by a layperson. However, there was also a psychiatrist’s signature on it.
"When did these symptoms start?"
"I believe you all have failed to understand the objective of this commission."
The secretary disregarded Roger’s question, and said, "This election is vital for Mayor Lyon. It’s only normal for him to be under tremendous pressure. I asked for your assistance because we hope you can provide comprehensive consultation results to show that the mayor is emotionally stable."
"Don’t we need to see the patient before providing consultation results?"
"Mayor Lyon has a charity event to attend in the afternoon and doesn’t have time to meet with you. All you need to do is leave the consultation results. Once you do that, the task will be considered completed."
"But..."
"Understood."
Song Lan cut off Roger.
He had already fully understood what was going on.
The mayor’s request was not for genuine psychological consultation, but to find a credible psychological consultant to provide a certificate of mental health, in order to shield him from potential mudslinging by his competitors.
Consequently, it was meaningless for Roger to continue disputing with the other party.
"As our employer, your needs take precedence. Roger, with your expertise, you should be able to make a fairly accurate diagnosis even without meeting the patient, right?"
While speaking, Song Lan vehemently gestured at Roger with his eyes, fearing the latter would adamantly seek to dispute right from wrong with the mayor’s secretary. If that happened, they might not only potentially irritate their employer and they could even bring lethal misfortune upon themselves.
Mental decline and hallucinations could either be due to a psychological illness or just a result of stress and fatigue.
They, as commonplace citizens, need not concern themselves with the mayor’s election issues.
"Hmm, providing direct consultation results shouldn’t be a problem, but you need to explain about these two symptoms. Any half-baked results would be seen through by the experts."
Seeing Roger concede, the secretary nodded satisfactorily and said, "The hallucinations are a recent issue. Recently, the first thing Mayor Lyon does every morning is to gather all security personnel at his residence and personally verify their appearances and names. He does this because he believes that someone is replacing his security staff."
Even she, a layperson, could recognize that this was clearly the mayor’s hallucination.
The security personnel at the residence are all hand-picked elites. The shortest-serving among them had worked under the mayor for at least three years. They interacted frequently, so if someone had been replaced, wouldn’t the chief of security notice? Instead, it was the mayor who noticed.
During their conversation, the hover car slowly stopped in front of a two-story mansion.
The grand architectural style was in stark contrast with the overall style of District 17. It was evident that Mayor Lyon had invested a great deal of money in curating his residence.
The security at the residence was extremely tight. As soon as Song Lan got out of the car, he saw at least five patrol teams guarding the exterior of the villa. The patrol team leads, dressed in heavy bulletproof vests and armed, even had dogs leading them.
One of the dogs glanced at him as it walked by, causing him to fall to the ground weak-kneed, which created a small disturbance. Seeing this, Song Lan quickly looked away, promptly distancing himself from the commotion.
Animals seemed to possess senses far superior to humans. Fortunately, the restless dog was quickly restrained by the security personnel who seemed to assume that the dog was scared by the landing of the hover car.
This dog seems to have some suppressive effect on him.
Song Lan silently decided to stay as far away from small animals as possible in the future.
He stepped forward, continuing the earlier conversation, "Experiencing severe stress just before the election is common. Mayor Lyon might just have been unable to sleep properly recently and isn’t mentally ill at all. If he can find a relaxation method, this issue might easily be resolved."
"I believe that the mayor can adjust his emotions."
The secretary’s reaction was noncommittal, "You should get to work now. Let me know if you need anything, and I will do my best to fulfill your needs."
You said it yourself.
Song Lan didn’t expect such a good deal.
Since their employer allowed for the task to be haphazardly done, why should they take their work seriously?
After all, the mayor would ultimately be the one wasting his money, which had nothing to do with him.
"Roger, you just need to prepare a psychological consultation report following their requirements."
Once the task was completed, they could all go home. They might even get the afternoon off early.
"Understood."
Roger could only agree unwillingly.
He knew very well that arguing with the secretary wouldn’t change her opinion and could potentially lead to unnecessary troubles.
"Follow me, all the basic materials have been prepared."
...
Song Lan was the last one in the line. He deliberately slowed his pace because he noticed a white figure emerging from somewhere.
"Master, is this really the mayor’s residence?"
Elmon had an incredulous look on his face.
"The mansion is imposing, isn’t it?"
Song Lan pointed toward the grand porch, trying to get his point across through just his gaze.
This was a mansion that he could never afford in his lifetime. At least now, they were able to feast their eyes.
"But..."
Elmon’s confusion only deepened. He pointed toward the security personnel patrolling in the distance. "Why are there dead bodies everywhere in the mayor’s residence?"
