Chapter 529: Chapter 529: Visitor_1
Following the navigation robot, the two made their way through the bustling campus to the faculty area of Purple Wisteria Academy.
In this area, the presence of students was almost nonexistent, suggesting that students everywhere maintain a natural sense of awe toward their teachers.
Dr. Kulin, clad in a white lab coat and looking to be not quite 40, seemed to be suffering the effects of chronic late nights. Dark circles were prominent under her eyes, and besides thick research materials, her desk was laden with various brands of instant coffee. On the way to meet Song Lan and Lu Xiang, she had brewed herself yet another cup.
Her voice sounded listless, and her gaze upon the two visitors was somewhat bleary. Dr. Kulin’s continuous yawning gave the impression that she might fall asleep at any moment.
"These are the enrollment brochures and some confidential internal information of the school that I’ve prepared for you. Please keep them secret after you’ve read them."
As she spoke, she yawned again.
Although Dr. Kulin maintained politeness and propriety as best she could, it wasn’t hard to detect from her tone that she wasn’t particularly welcoming of their visit.
Song Lan, however, could sympathize with her mood.
If he had been assigned to guide people on a tour after working through the night, he would likely have had difficulty maintaining a good disposition.
After receiving the materials, Lu Xiang carefully perused them on the sofa in the office meant for visitors.
After all, their present role was that of parents planning to send their child to study at Purple Wisteria Academy in the future, so they had to perform their part convincingly.
After a brief exchange, the atmosphere in the office fell into a strange, somewhat eerie silence.
As Lu Xiang flipped through the materials provided by Kulin, Song Lan noticed that Dr. Kulin was sipping her coffee and silently sizing up Lu Xiang.
Both parties were patient; she waited quietly until Lu Xiang had finished reviewing all of the materials before finally enquiring, "Director Lu, you must have graduated not too long ago, right?"
The question was loaded with implications.
At her age, thinking about her child’s future schooling was somewhat premature. Moreover, Kulin had heard that before coming to Purple Wisteria, they had not visited any branch of the Purple Wisteria Group for the necessary tests. This led her to doubt whether such a young lady could have a child of school age.
With this in mind, she looked at Song Lan with suspicion.
If that was the case, then it would suggest a serious issue with Chief Song.
"We learned of Purple Wisteria Academy during our exchange with Mr. Qi He, who invited us to visit. As for the child... we are still trying," Lu Xiang volunteered, clarifying on behalf of Song Lan, sensing Dr. Kulin’s skeptical gaze.
"Qi He, huh—"
Hearing Lu Xiang’s explanation, Dr. Kulin sighed longingly, her tone and eyes somehow forlorn—a reaction that startled her. She instinctively sensed there might be an undeniable but obscure connection between Kulin and Qi He.
Realizing her lapse, Kulin quickly adjusted her emotions and changed the subject, "The academy has arranged staff accommodations for you. Per our agreement, the visit will last one week, and I will serve as your guide. This is my contact information. Should you encounter any issues on campus, feel free to call me at any time."
Despite Dr. Kulin’s tactic of changing the subject, it was proven that she was not one to hide her feelings well.
Her tone, demeanor, gestures, and content of speech contrasted sharply.
While delivering these polite and proper words, she put on a mask of suffering.
For the teachers at the academy, the days leading up to the start of each term are always the busiest, and for her, as the head of the group’s Spiritual Energy research institution and the director of education, this period marks the beginning of her annual nightmare. The arrival of Song Lan and Lu Xiang brought a malicious twist to her already insane workload.
"I need to find a way to resign from one of these positions next year," she thought to herself.
This thought would surface in Kulin’s mind every time this season came around.
As for Mr. Qi He and the high-ups at the Ragus Foundation, they were some of her life’s greatest enemies—they never understood the amount of work they caused her, constantly arranging tours every few weeks.
Group visits to Purple Wisteria Academy had seemingly become a fixed part of the Foundation’s strategy to woo newcomers, and she was the prime victim of this program.
"Then I’ll leave it in your capable hands."
As a salted fish, no one understood Dr. Kulin’s pain better than Song Lan, who gave her a sympathetic look.
"It’s no trouble at all, no trouble," she replied insincerely.
Long-term sleep deprivation had made Dr. Kulin’s facial expressions quite uncoordinated; she managed a slight smile, but her bloodshot eyes seemed as if they were about to bleed. Coffee and anti-fatigue medications appeared to do nothing to improve her current state.
Leaving the office, the two dragged their luggage and, under the guidance of a navigation robot, arrived at the employee dormitory prepared for them by Purple Wisteria Academy. The dormitory had a technological feel, with almost every facility inside the room provided by artificial intelligence services. Companies under the Ragus Foundation had invested in Purple Wisteria Academy, and in return, they had the priority recruitment rights to the students each year.
Even for the United Government, Psychics were a rather precious resource.
Considering their status as a couple and prospective parents, the dormitory had only one large bed set up.
Song Lan sat on the bed and stretched.
"What’s your plan?"
After arriving at Purple Wisteria Academy, Lu Xiang felt the need to adjust his plan; even if the Purple Wisteria group was using emotional gases on students, it was done quite covertly. This might be the very reason they had always managed to maintain their secrecy—it was easy to see that the majority of students truly enjoyed their campus life here.
"We can start with the students, look, like this."
Song Lan fiddled with the tablet on the nightstand, logging into the Purple Wisteria Academy’s student forum as a visitor. The forum used an internal network, and after the incident in the Sixth Neutral Country, they had enhanced their network security management; you could only log into the student forum from within the campus.
"The forum accounts are tied to the student ID numbers on their campus cards; visitor accounts can’t post comments," Song Lan explained.
This meant that Purple Wisteria Academy implemented a complete real-name internet policy; there was no anonymity on the forum allowing for the posting of inappropriate comments, as this would enable the teachers to immediately identify the student involved.
Under the real-name policy, the discussions on the forum were harmonious.
But this did not prevent him from finding some important information.
"Look at this," he said, opening the hottest thread titled "Excellent Student Assessment and Off-Campus Exploration Selection Methods." "It looks like only outstanding students granted the right can explore off-campus. Speaking of which, what exactly is out there worth exploring outside this school?"
