Chapter 528: Chapter 528: We Cannot be Teammates_1
Although Xinya always found it hard to find teammates who could stick with her for the long term, she was very familiar with the details of forming teams at Purple Wisteria Academy. For instance, to accommodate their more vulnerable students, the academy had set a team formation cooldown period. Once the registration was complete, students could only submit applications for changes or disbandment after one term had passed.
Xinya’s teaming situation was quite stable.
Every time a term ended, she would reliably part ways with her former teammates.
For her, the start of each term was the busiest time, running around trying to find new teammates.
After learning about the concept of the team formation cooldown period, Song Lan felt that Xinya’s teaming career had taken on a hint of deception. For her teammates, once registration was complete, backing out would have to wait until after a term.
The only aspect of the student card that was advantageous for Xinya’s team formation was probably the "Support Type" Spiritual Energy rating.
From her stories, Song Lan learned that Support Type Psychics were the most popular in the school. As long as they weren’t as weak as her, they could usually find stable teammates. After all, teaming up in school was a long-term project, and many students continued their team relationships even after graduation.
It was said that many Five Star rescuers’ teammates had been their school companions, understanding each other with perfect synergy, and their stories were well celebrated within the school.
This reminded Song Lan of Jasmine and her teammates, a team formed by three Six Star rescuers.
It turned out that their good friend Wild Bone was the exception.
He guessed that it might be due to Wild Bone’s unsociable nature that he was often alone.
He probably couldn’t even find a girlfriend, let alone teammates.
Thinking this, Song Lan couldn’t help but feel that Wild Bone’s life had gained a few more shades of tragedy.
According to Purple Wisteria Academy’s statistics from the previous year, Support Type Psychics accounted for only 10% of the new year’s enrollment, making them extremely scarce.
Research reports indicated that Psychic Abilities were related to human consciousness, and this was particularly evident in children.
Song Lan felt that this was similar to choosing heroes in competitive games; after all, those willing to play the supporting role were in the minority, with most people preferring the thrill of being the main character who wreaks havoc.
Purple Wisteria Academy, as a pioneer in Psychic Abilities research, categorized abilities into Destruction, interference, and support to encourage Psychics to cooperate. Researchers believed that cooperation among Psychics could lead to a qualitative leap in their abilities. In an ideal state, the optimal team composition would be to have one of each—Destruction, interference, Support Type Psychics—enabling them to handle complex situations.
But due to the severe scarcity of Support Type abilities, most teams were comprised of different combinations of Destruction and interference Psychics.
Every term, there would be naive students who attempted to follow the school’s recommended team composition by recruiting a Support Type Psychic, which was Xinya’s opportunity to join a team.
Of course, after a dose of harsh reality, they would eventually realize that having Xinya in the team was less useful than recruiting another Destruction or interference Psychic.
After listening to Xinya’s story, Song Lan realized she was a girl filled with tragic colors.
As the train pulled into the station, she slung her backpack over her shoulders, bade farewell to the two of them, and then ran towards the campus without looking back. In her own words, the "chance encounter on the train" plan had failed, and she had even made a special effort to dress up that day to leave a good impression on the new juniors and seniors for the new term.
However, she had a backup plan.
Next, she signed up for the academy’s volunteer activity to welcome new students, the most direct way to interact with newcomers each semester. As the saying goes in novels, who could resist a gentle senior sister who had been considerately caring for you since the first day of registration?
For some reason, watching Xinya’s retreating figure, Song Lan felt a sense of tragic grandeur.
"I don’t think you’re in any position to mock Wild Bone."
It was only when the new students had all rushed off towards the campus and the train platform was left with just the two of them that Lu Xiang, on tiptoes, whispered in Song Lan’s ear.
She too had listened to Xinya’s account just moments before and couldn’t help marveling that Purple Wisteria Academy truly deserved its reputation as the United Government’s hall of Psychic Users. Even a student who was struggling to form a team possessed knowledge that was unknown to the common man, like the data on Support Type Psychic Users and their team situation, knowledge that was unavailable to outsiders like them.
She continued, "You don’t have any teammates either."
"But I have a girlfriend."
Song Lan turned his head, stating his case with conviction.
He firmly believed that in personal relationships, he was at least a bit better off than his invincible friend, Wild Bone.
This response made Lu Xiang raise an eyebrow, but she did not argue.
Right now, the mysterious Purple Wisteria Academy was completely unveiled before their eyes. From a distance, the academy fulfilled all imaginations of an aristocrats’ academy, even giving off the impression that the entire city was an extension of the academy itself.
This sensation was somewhat subtle, as it did not belong to any city within United Government territory, it appeared as if the campus boundary was the boundary of the entire city.
And when she looked beyond the school’s walls, the thought "better not go out" would pop up in her mind, almost a reflexive response.
While there was still some time before school started, the campus had already come to life.
According to Xinya, about 20% of the students chose not to go home during the holidays, preferring to spend their vacation at the academy, which also arranged a rich array of extracurricular activities for the students. When asked why she didn’t stay at school, Xinya shyly explained that the pressure of academy life was simply too much, and she had to use the precious vacation time to go home to her family to adjust her mindset.
Luckily, Xinya’s parents didn’t have excessive expectations for her and always consoled her after understanding her situation, telling her not to overburden herself and that it was perfectly fine to live in a small city with her family after graduation.
From a distance, Lu Xiang observed the lively campus, carefully recalling Xinya’s descriptions of the academy, and realized the atmosphere was vastly different from what she had imagined.
Qi He had suggested that the Purple Wisteria Group, in order to maximize the students’ potential, used emotional gases on them year-round. In her imagination, the students should have lived in a state of mental disturbance or apathy, but now, looking around, what she saw were children with smiles on their faces, seemingly looking forward to the start of the new semester.
Even Xinya, an outlier in the academy, spoke of it with anticipation and praise.
While they were deep in thought, a navigation robot floated slowly toward them.
The voice coming from its eye was not a synthetic mechanical sound, but that of a mature woman, "Hello, I believe you must be Director Lu and Chief Song? Allow me to introduce myself, I am Kulin, the head of the Psychic Research Institution. Please follow the navigation robot, I’m waiting for you in my office."
