Chapter 510: Chapter 510: Distant Future_1

Song Lan had grown.

As Lu Xiang watched Song Lan carry an unfamiliar masked youth into the room and push the person, whose fate was uncertain, into the wardrobe, she couldn’t help but have such a thought.

It seemed like only a blink of an eye had passed since the other party disappeared, and while she was still dazed, Song Lan had already returned to the hotel room.

No sounds of fighting came from outside, and in the bustling hotel, no one would notice this incident because, for everyone, they had merely experienced a leap in time. The mental blackout left no room for them to comprehend what had actually happened during that leap.

For those who were unaware of Song Lan’s abilities, they might just think that they had spaced out for a moment.

And the Six Stars rescuer, the symbol of the United Government’s supreme combat force, had once again become a small chip, just like Wild Bone had.

Lu Xiang stepped forward to examine the masked youth.

His mechanical eye had stopped working, still open with dim and lifeless pupils.

The only wound was on his temple, which was hardly noticeable unless examined closely.

That was also the reason why she thought Song Lan had grown—more covert and quicker than the last encounter with Wild Bone, accomplishing everything in this surveillance-filled hotel right under the noses of the Emergency Case Investigation Bureau and Review Meeting staff.

The masquerade of the ball also played a role, altering Song Lan’s usual listless persona, as if he had turned into a true professional assassin.

But this time, the situation was different from that with Wild Bone.

No one in the Seventeenth District could cover for him like Esinvig had done before by taking the blame for defeating a Six Stars rescuer. When the rescuer department realized the youth had lost contact, they would spare no expense to launch a full investigation.

And the sudden disappearance of Song Lan just now made her realize something.

The higher-ups had long been aware that the "concerned citizen" had not died and had arranged for a Six Stars rescuer to secretly monitor her. Otherwise, Song Lan would not have sought trouble with a Six Stars rescuer unless absolutely necessary, given his nature.

"The key lies in the evidence."

After checking the wound on the youth’s temple, Lu Xiang regained her composure, "Now we need to move him to a place where the United Government can’t find him for the time being."

The higher echelons’ suspicion had now become a confirmed fact, leaving them with the only option of outright denial. Without decisive evidence, even the Review Meeting couldn’t openly take action.

She believed that this would not be difficult for Song Lan.

It was just that the timing was extremely poor.

While the upper echelons were beginning to suspect them, a Six Stars rescuer responsible for monitoring them had "mysteriously disappeared."

Lu Xiang hadn’t felt such heavy contemplation for a long time. She could foresee that after this, they would engage in a long battle of wits and cunning with the higher-ups.

"There’s no need for that anymore."

Song Lan shook his head, calmly closing the wardrobe door as if it was the best way to conceal what was inside.

His actions caused Lu Xiang to be slightly startled because even rookies just starting out wouldn’t hide such an important body in a hotel wardrobe. She knew that even after Song Lan had killed Dorago Safron in his apartment, he would take the body out overnight and throw it into a waste pool on the outskirts of the Seventeenth District.

"The notice for emergency evacuation will come down soon, you need to prepare to depart."

He had already anticipated what was going to happen next.

Almost the very moment his words ended, someone knocked on the hotel room door.

Review Meeting staff members, speaking through the door, informed everyone to pack up their belongings, and that the flight to The First Region was ready.

This was one or two days earlier than Lu Xiang and Mr. Killer had anticipated.

They had thought the United Government would allow one to two days for evacuation, to ensure all important figures had left the Seventeenth District before taking action.

"Understood."

Lu Xiang replied, staring at Song Lan and asking, "What on earth is going on?"

The tone transmitted from beneath the mask was somewhat unfamiliar to her. Song Lan had always maintained a nonchalant demeanor when facing even the most difficult enemies. Yet now, his nerves had not relaxed after removing the Six Stars rescuer’s chip.

The Review Meeting’s notification was also uncharacteristically urgent.

It was indeed too rushed.

What responded to her was not Song Lan but the roaring that whizzed past the window.

She quickly walked to the window, from this angle she could clearly see the shadows streaking across the sky.

Bombers, drones, and fully mechanized troops.

For a graduate from the Morning Star Academy, this scene was not unfamiliar; in the real-world missions of the "outside" ones, she had seen these war machines of the United Government more than once. It was just that the United Government rarely used these war machines within its own territory.

Then she noticed something even more unusual.

Mobilizing such a massive mechanized force couldn’t possibly happen without any hint of it leaking out. This force seemed to have skipped over the entire process of assembly and transit with the leap of time and appeared out of nowhere within the Seventeenth District.

She followed the trajectory of the planes and noticed that the urban district seemed to have already become a disaster zone.

An endless stream of mechanized troops was converging from the rural areas of the Seventeenth District toward its center. Then, Lu Xiang noticed even more bizarre details—the high-level executives standing below seemed completely oblivious to the existence of the mechanized force, chatting calmly amongst themselves. She even saw a swarm drone pass directly through the body of one of them.

"The future that is foreseen will certainly happen."

Song Lan suddenly spoke.

He admitted that foresight was a convenient ability, but he always did his best to avoid using it.

He recalled his conversation with δ in the Seventh District.

δ believed that destiny was real.

The so-called foresight was just seeing in advance the scenes that were destined to take place. Under the pull of destiny, humanity’s free will was too insignificant; no matter how hard they tried, at best, they could only change the process leading up to the points of destiny.

It was like the Six Stars rescuer’s fated failure, or the United Government’s decision to bring forward the evacuation plan.

And in his recent foresight, he had seen an even more distant future.

In the future he saw, the city he knew had turned into a field of ruins, with skies nearly shrouded by sandstorms. Gazing out, the entire city was left in ruins.

The future that is foreseen will certainly happen.

This was his conclusion after numerous attempts, with the difference lying only in the process leading to the predicted outcome.

Thus, no matter whether the result was caused by the mechanized troops that suddenly appeared outside the window, by Langinus, Shadow, or himself, the Seventeenth District would face the end foreseen.

This was why he only hid the young man in the closet.

Compared to the future that was soon to arrive, this game of victory and loss was insignificant.
