Chapter 489: "Justice" _1

Chapter 489: Chapter 489: "Justice" _1

Jasmine hung up the phone and looked at the δ on the wall making faces at her non-stop.

Recently, she had gradually gotten used to having a stalker around, but for safety’s sake, after leaving the Seventh District, she still submitted an application to the rescuer department and took the initiative to transfer herself to a sparsely populated research station for medical aid.

This research station was just one of the numerous exploratory projects of the United Government, with only a few polar scholars residing there permanently. Before departing, she had carefully reviewed each scholar’s information and ensured her safety before heading to the station.

However, in the following days of interaction, δ kept her promise, or rather, she seemed to have little interest in these scientists who left early and returned late, their daily work consisting of chipping away at ice blocks. From Jasmine’s observations, δ seemed to mainly take pleasure in teasing her.

She gradually figured out how to interact with δ, realizing that this existence labeled as a monster by the United Government could also be communicated with.

Just like now, Jasmine directly asked for the other’s opinion, "What grand thoughts do you have?"

"Angle Saffire, I’ve heard of him."

Perhaps because of being imprisoned in a cage for too long, δ had been very talkative since her release.

Of course, if you don’t deliberately guide the conversation, she would ramble on ceaselessly by herself, either about things you don’t understand or about spreading hatred and the importance of revenge.

"That human indirectly set us free, we won’t treat him poorly."

"So it was you guys who caused all the trouble."

After confirming that the strange events along the way were likely the work of another Shadow’s abilities, Jasmine flipped through the "United Government Psychic Collection Handbook" given to their team by the Review Meeting, but still came up empty-handed.

There was no ability listed that mentioned causing misfortune to the people around.

"Want to know the answer?"

The shadow of δ suddenly flashed out from the wall, propping herself up on the desk, "You help me kill someone, and I’ll tell you the answer."

"Go away."

Without any hesitation, Jasmine waved her hand in distaste, "You’re blocking the light."

In the polar research station, she only had a small house with what seemed to be light bulbs from several decades ago. Because of δ’s features, when she planted herself in front of Jasmine, all the light was blocked behind her.

"You’re not even listening to the conditions; what if I ask you to kill a great evil?"

"Shush!"

Jasmine did not argue with her, realizing from their long interaction that δ had a very young psychological age, so she always managed to retain pure emotions about many events, distinguishing good from evil and love from hate very clearly.

Arguing with a child is the biggest waste of time; she’d rather review every Shadow ability again, informing her teammates of the organized data. Even though Bills had a copy of the handbook, she knew him well enough to know that he was definitely not the type to sit down and read carefully.

Of course, δ wouldn’t obediently back down; she not only refused to leave, but she also kept shaking in front of Jasmine’s eyes, occasionally passing through the manual, and then smearing the whole screen with ink, acting just like a child provoked into defiance.

"You really won’t kill?"

While causing interference, she kept babbling non-stop.

But Jasmine had already found a way to deal with her; without saying a word, she picked up the electronic manual and lay down on the bed. Although the lighting was even dimmer here, she could still barely see the text on it.

"You’ll regret it, I’m actually helping you."

δ felt a bit bored and shouted at Jasmine.

No matter where, children were not good at dealing with the silent treatment. After aimlessly wandering around for a moment, she suddenly dived into the wall beside Jasmine; but this time, she didn’t block the light, instead, she quietly hid in the wall and read the electronic manual together with Jasmine.

"Luck and misfortune have other ways of interpretation."

After a long while, she suddenly dropped the remark.

Jasmine paused in turning the pages and instinctively responded, "Hmm?"

Laughter immediately came from within the walls.

The shape of the Shadow suddenly became much larger, clawing in the air like a demon, "You really do want to know the correct answer, don’t you? Admit it, you just want to know the answer! Come on, admit it, admit it! If you admit it, I’ll give you a hint!"

With an air of feigned resignation, Jasmine sighed, but a cunning smile flickered across her eyes.

She lowered her voice, speaking as if resigned to fate, "Alright, I admit it, I want to know."

"Destiny."

δ spoke up, his tone rising with laughter, "A person’s fortune and misfortune are all written by fate. When he will meet someone, when he will fall ill, when he will die—these events are all predetermined. And we, too, will one day be released from prison!"

It was one of several common beliefs among her kind, which she had not originally believed.

But when Song Lan burst into the prison and caused the collapse of the figure that had thought itself in control of destiny, she began to believe in that view.

No matter how the process might change, it would always lead people to the same conclusion.

At this, Jasmine was taken aback.

It wasn’t the fatalism that surprised her but rather the sudden recollection of an ambiguous explanation in the electronic handbook.

She quickly found the page in question:

Psychic Handbook, Number 006

Ability Name: Justice

Holder: Bills, Joanna, Executioner X, Deng Lun, T...

This was the only ability in the electronic handbook to list multiple holders, and even by the basic definition of Psychic Abilities, it shouldn’t be possible for multiple people to possess the same ability.

Psychic Abilities are a manifestation of the human spirit and will; hence, even if a pair of twins both awakened to an ability, the manifestations of their abilities would differ.

What concerned Jasmine more was the only sentence described in the ability features:

When you walk the righteous path, destiny will become your ally.

It appeared that even the rescuer who had recorded this text could not fathom the true nature of the ability; he may not have been sure that he even captured the holders of the ability, listing so many names.

And now, to these names, there might soon be added an Angle Saffire.

Jasmine immediately sent the information she had extracted from δ to Mount, and just as the message was relayed, an urgent knock on the door suddenly erupted, along with the clamor of people at the polar research station discernible through the isolation door.

"Doctor, doctor! Something terrible has happened!"

"The deputy captain has had an accident!"

"Please, save the deputy captain!"

...

Jasmine put away the electronic handbook and headed toward the door.

Seeing this, the Shadow within the walls suddenly fell silent, and δ reverted to his original mocking demeanor.

"I did warn you just now."
