Chapter 463: 463 Chapter: The Salted Fish Conservation Theorem_1
In the following days, Song Lan added a new activity to his daily routine: visiting Hanna.
He valued his first student who willingly followed him to learn the spirit of a salted fish. Although Hanna couldn’t move while lying in her hospital bed, she listened to each class with eagerness, already concocting several schemes to skip class.
The lessons had opened the doors to a new world for her, making her realize she could not only live but live a rich life. The work at the investigation bureau was much freer than she had imagined.
"I’ve learned a lot."
That evening, Hanna’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she learned how to slack off during field operations.
The visits from Song Lan and Lu Xiang made her realize how fortunate she was to have friends by her side. Then, she suddenly remembered the idle chat from the nurses’ station during the day and asked, "I heard that three Six Stars rescuers from The First Region have already arrived—are they at the school now?"
"There’s no confirmed news yet."
Song Lan was holding half a banana. He had also been quietly observing this matter. Most importantly, he wanted to see how the legendary Six Stars rescuers would arrive in the Seventh District. He thought of their friend Wild Bone, whose arrival had put the Rebel Army and the entire Sixth Nation on edge. He was the most ominous person Song Lan had seen to date.
He had also imagined many grand entrances for the three Six Stars rescuers.
For example, descending from the sky on a missile, and with a casual stomp capable of demolishing the tallest building in the Seventh District upon landing.
But days passed, and though everyone was discussing that the trio had arrived in the Seventh District, there was no concrete news to prove it.
The institutions were still on lockdown, and the shadows that had escaped from the black pyramid had gone silent. Song Lan even suspected they had already fled the city.
The students confined in their dormitories surfed the internet at a high intensity every day, and rumors abounded, making it difficult to discern which news was false.
"By the way, I heard the Ragus Foundation is going to hold an exhibition event here."
This wasn’t the classified information that Dr. Bai Zhu had found; rather, he had seen the posters put up by members of the Ragus Foundation on his way to the prosthetic hospital.
"An exhibition event, now?"
"It’s said that they’ve made significant progress in their investigation of the Void."
"I see, they probably want to stabilize the public’s mind through this method."
Enlightened, Hanna recalled that a colleague from the bureau had visited her earlier that day, mentioning that they had been so busy with work recently that they could barely catch their breath. The investigation bureau had taken over the alien ruin, and they needed to figure out how to convoy the stuff inside back to The First Region.
Combining recent major events, they felt it could be a life-threatening mission.
"The bureau hopes I can move up the surgery schedule to get back to work as soon as possible."
After all, having such an obedient employee from The First Region would make the whole operation much easier for the investigation bureau.
The chief doctor advised that for the sake of safety, surgery could only be deemed safe after another half a month, but the investigation bureau clearly didn’t want to wait any longer.
Today’s visitor had come under the guise of concern, but in reality, was pressuring her to return to work.
"So what did you say?"
"Of course, I could only respond to the call of the bureau."
Hanna paused deliberately for a moment, squinting her eyes and revealing a fox-like sly smile, "and then I coughed up blood all over them on the spot... The concentrated tomato sugar you prepared really worked!"
Just imagining the shocked look on her colleague’s face, repeatedly telling her not to force herself and that they would report back to the bureau to find another solution, made Hanna want to laugh.
If it had been her before, she probably would have had to risk the surgery and stubbornly return to work.
"I told you so."
Song Lan hadn’t expected Hanna to use the trick he’d taught her so quickly, and was genuinely happy for her, "I was coughing up blood after working overtime for two days in a row, and the sight turned our manager’s face pale as a ghost; she immediately gave me two days off!"
"Are you two elementary school students?"
As the one who was deceived, Lu Xiang’s eyelids twitched violently a few times, not understanding why anyone would celebrate such a thing.
Wake up, Hanna!
You are the top second student with the highest score in the 111th comprehensive evaluation!
Unfortunately, Hanna didn’t grasp the meaning in Lu Xiang’s eyes; she and Song Lan were like elementary school kids who had succeeded with their mischief, their triumphant smiles making Lu Xiang want to wallop each of them on the head.
Lu Xiang was starting to regret letting Song Lan spread his twisted theories; finding a comrade-in-arms seemed to have made him a lot more arrogant in the past few days, even daring to mock her.
In fact, back at the junkyard, he had tried to promote his school of thought to people like Medea, but all he got was a "Sorry, not interested" in response.
Apart from the security team "Heavy Hammer" trio and Xinyue, no one had the time to discuss these matters with him.
But on the other hand...
Lu Xiang wasn’t opposed to Song Lan mocking her.
Because Song Lan’s self-exposure when he was full of himself gave her peace of mind when she exploited him.
She had understood long ago that arguing and swearing wouldn’t solve anything; she would only seek reparation through more concrete actions.
During the days when Song Lan was zealously preaching the spirit of the salted fish to Hanna, Lu Xiang also put forth a new theory.
"The Conservation of Salted Fish" theorem.
The theorem postulates that the time one becomes a salted fish is conserved; if you slack off at work, you’re bound to pay a price in other aspects of your life.
Even the king of salted fish, Song Lan, couldn’t escape this theorem.
"Lu Xiang, Song Lan, I have a favor to ask you," Hanna said, after finishing discussing the details of faking illness to scare her colleagues. "I’d also like to attend the Ragus Foundation’s exhibition, but it’s not too convenient for me to move around right now. Could you take me with you?"
"That shouldn’t be a problem, but are you interested in the Void?"
"Not the Void, the Ragus Foundation," Hanna corrected, shaking her head and hesitating as if reluctant to speak. After a long pause, she finally said, "It has some relation to my family."
"Alright, the exhibition is tomorrow; we’ll come to pick you up early in the morning. I’ve heard that Qi He, the representative of the foundation, will also be attending in person," Lu Xiang replied.
"Then I’m counting on you two."
...
After saying goodbye to Hanna, Song Lan and Lu Xiang left the prosthetic hospital and went back to their hotel, as usual.
It was only after Hanna mentioned it that Song Lan remembered they had known each other for so long, yet Hanna had never spoken of her family. He could only infer from casual conversations that Hanna was born into a wealthy household, able to buy prosthetics worth millions without hesitation.
"Old Lu, what kind of family does Hanna come from?"
"Huh, haven’t I mentioned it to you before?"
Lu Xiang was taken aback before saying, "Her parents are quite prestigious within the Conservative Faction; by that account, she should be archenemies with the Innovator Faction."
