Chapter 458: Chapter 458: Lights Out_1

"You mean to say that my coming here is all arranged by destiny?"

Song Lan looked perplexed.

As someone who never believed in fate, he thought it was the result of the efforts of Professor Myles, the teaching assistants, Angle Saffire, and Hanna, their struggle against destiny that gave him the chance to find the truth.

As for the "destiny" that was implanted in his mind about the struggle for the identity of the Guardian, he never took it to heart.

"Everything is arranged by fate, you and everything around you."

...

"It’s deceiving you."

"Don’t believe it."

"Pitiful, merely a slightly powerful psychic, yet presuming to be the master of destiny."

...

This time, Song Lan heard other voices, some angry, some mocking; they also came from above the throne, within the stars atop the colossus’s head. These voices seemed endless and became somewhat noisy, quickly drowning out the voice of the colossus.

Whether it was the colossus or the malevolent beings it mentioned, their voices went straight to his thoughts.

Song Lan didn’t like this way of communicating.

"But they seem not to believe you, and they say you are a liar."

Song Lan promptly reported the personal attacks of the malevolent beings on the colossus. The colossus hoped he would become the blade to execute its will, but he only wished to see the colossus fight those existences in the shades above its head, to see who among them was truly more formidable.

If necessary, he could even temporarily take on the job of Dragonfly Captain, providing a platform for an absolutely fair and just competition.

However, his words plunged both parties into silence.

After a brief silence, the voice of the colossus suddenly exploded in Song Lan’s head like a bomb, "You can hear them!"

This voice was so loud it suppressed all other noise, and the incessant, chattering sounds around him quieted down in unison.

Even though they constantly hurled personal insults at the colossus, it seemed they were very much afraid of its presence.

"Good, very good!"

The colossus’s majestic and divine voice contained a hint of delight, the zeal of the researchers also seeming to flow within its program, "You’re very talented, I will refine you into a blade sharp enough to slay all malevolent beings!"

"With Spiritual Energy?"

"Spiritual Energy? Of course not."

The starlight shining on Song Lan became bright and dazzling, "I bestow upon you Dominate, a power that can even alter fate!"

This time, Song Lan finally noticed some changes.

The feeling was familiar to him; he had felt something similar during his research on psychic abilities. At this critical moment, his good friend "Rat" became an important reference.

That was the case when he used interference-based psychic abilities to manipulate "Rat" to face off against Pero.

The colossus seemed to think this was a power above and beyond spiritual energy, strong enough to Dominate everything in the world and even fate itself, its tone growing more zealous as it imparted this new concept to Song Lan.

But...

In theory, isn’t this just an applied form of interference-based psychic abilities?

With an understanding of the principle, even a three-year-old child could do it with ease.

But to not disappoint the colossus’s good intentions, Song Lan could only play along.

As a master of social interaction, he was keenly aware of how devastating a blow it would be for someone eager to introduce what they believe to be a novel concept, only to receive a response like "Hasn’t this thing been around for ages?" or "The three-year-old next door can do it!"

The world will become ruthless and cold, which could easily plunge the other side into depression amidst crushed hopes, or lead them down a path of crime.

Regrettably, his good intentions failed to reach the colossus.

Because his Spiritual Energy was somewhat too intense when contrasted with the other party’s color, those rays shining upon him from the stars above all sunk into the "Black Hole" at his feet instantaneously. Not only that, but the sacred halo became nourishment for the "Black Hole," which began to spread rapidly in all directions.

It flowed like a stream over his ankles, submerging the ground, yet the "Black Hole" was not content to stop there—it eagerly surged towards the stairs that led to the throne.

A strange sense of familiarity welled up deep within Song Lan’s heart.

He remembered a moment at the Barrosa Group subsidiary, when his Spiritual Energy seemed as though it had come to life.

But this time, it wasn’t the roaring sound from the throne above that evoked this feeling, but the apparition that rested atop the colossus’ head.

He looked up at those monsters lurking amongst the constellations that were also watching him.

The colossus’ sharp roar broke their eye contact and yanked Song Lan back to reality from this strange sensation.

—"What on earth are you?"

Clearly, it was a terribly impolite question; in the eyes of the colossus, he seemed to have been deprived of his qualifications as a human being.

Rumbling sounds came from above his head, and weapons that Song Lan had never seen before peeked out with their "heads" from among the stars.

The colossus, flickering with red light, swept across the steps, while weapons above sprayed brilliant halos that were not aimed at Song Lan, but at the stairs before him. The starlight blazed like flames, forming a chasm that kept the rolling black tides below the steps.

"You cannot ascend these stairs, not even half a step; this is your destiny!"

Before the words had ended, Song Lan’s extended right foot stepped across the blazing starlight, and in that moment, all the brilliance dimmed, quickly merging with the surrounding "Black Hole."

As he took the second step, the gears governing the weapons above began to spin rapidly, simultaneously swivelling their muzzles to point at the colossus seated on the throne.

"See, determinism is not believable."

Song Lan’s heart felt much more at ease.

The truth revealed that there was no "god." What sat on the throne was merely a powerful Psychic who believed they could Dominate fate.

The immense body of the colossus restricted his movements, leaving Him to stay put while facing Song Lan, who steadily ascended the steps.

Perhaps, those who designed the colossus had never intended for It to leave this place from the very beginning.

"Don’t come any closer!"

Realizing that his powers could not trip Song Lan, the colossus seemed to change tactics, resorting to noise interference.

The throne and steps trembled under his bellowing.

Yet this still couldn’t stop Song Lan’s advance; he wasn’t moving quickly, his movements resembling those of an ordinary person climbing stairs.

But the surging black tide behind him, as it reached the top of the staircase with him, once again separated his identity from that of an ordinary person.

Standing before the colossus, he now had a clearer view of the "Deity" created by Professor Myles, and the Deity finally ceased its roar, granting him a moment of peace.

"Don’t be nervous, you’re the god who controls destiny."

Song Lan’s hand gently rested on the body of the colossus, touching nothing but the temperatureless sensation of metal.

The black tide also climbed onto his body, flowing along his arm and into the body of the colossus.

The last bit of starlight was extinguished, leaving nothing but endless darkness around.

In the depths of the darkness, the man who climbed the stairs questioned destiny.

—"What are you afraid of?"
