Chapter 450: Chapter 451: Trouble Comes From the Mouth_1
The last two marbles helped Song Lan understand Professor Myles’s past more comprehensively and also why the Psychic Research Institute still remembered this epoch-making great researcher to this day.
However, their perception of Professor Myles had some deviations.
Perhaps it was because of the filter brought by Lu Xiang, and the professor’s subsequent regret that made him subconsciously believe that the professor’s theories had been exploited by those with ulterior motives, resulting in the tragedy that swept through the entire United Government, but the truth was that Professor Myles was involved in every decision that pushed the tragedy forward.
Just as Dr. Bai Zhu had said, in the struggle between compassion, conscience, and curiosity, it was always the latter that eventually triumphed.
These three "mottled" glass beads reminded him of the Meditation Basin, and now scientific technology had advanced to the point where if you had something you wanted to forget, you could simply excise it from your brain and permanently seal it inside an inconspicuous glass bead.
The imagery in the fourth glass bead was different.
Professor Myles had a full head of gray hair when he sealed this memory, and unlike the strong regret and struggle shown in the previous three, he just sat calmly, seemingly listening to someone’s narration, interjecting a sentence or two from time to time. Judging from the performance without physical evidence, one could only speculate an ordinary conversation, and due to the lack of critical details, Dr. Bai Zhu also couldn’t guess when this conversation had actually taken place.
Yet Song Lan felt that if it could be stored by Professor Myles alongside the first three memories, it indicated that its importance was no less than the former ones and considering the nature of the "mottled" glass beads, this was also a memory that the professor wanted to forget.
As he pondered, Lu Xiang finished attending the memorial service and returned to the room.
At this moment, Lu Xiang looked somewhat haggard, but she still keenly noticed the "mottled" glass beads by Song Lan’s pillow.
"Where did you find these?"
"The famous detective Safron handed them to me. He seemed to know I would seek out the past and waited outside the professor’s apartment."
After unraveling the secrets of the four glass beads, Song Lan had finally understood why Angle Saffire was willing to hand over these four "mottled" glass beads to him.
It was an open conspiracy.
Only a person with Psychic Abilities could decipher the secrets inside the beads.
And both he and Lu Xiang, on the surface, were not Psychics, with the abilities of the Bureau of Unusual Cases Investigation, they should have already discovered his past by now—a regular Law Enforcer from District 17 who had shown nothing out of the ordinary before meeting Lu Xiang.
Whether or not he had any interaction with his brother before his death, he must have known that Dorago Safron died in District 17 while he, on the brink of death, was diligently resolving problems for the Foster Family.
Lu Xiang was the catalyst that drove the Foster Family out of District 17, and for a detective with acute insight, focusing his view on him would not be difficult.
"I guess what he really wants to investigate is not the cause of Professor Myles’s death, but whether I’ve hidden my Psychic Abilities."
Song Lan felt that once Angle confirmed this, he could deduce the true identity of the "enthusiastic citizen" through his brother’s death and the entire course of the Foster Family incident a few months earlier. The other party might be among the few who still believed that the "enthusiastic citizen" wasn’t dead.
"What did Dr. Bai Zhu say?"
"She said that Angle Saffire’s résumé is very clean—three-star rescuer, diligent Bureau of Unusual Cases Agent, one of the few old-fashioned detectives, whose rescuer stars were almost all earned based on the cases he solved."
"And what about his prosthetics? Did she say how that happened?"
"He was betrayed by an informant during an undercover case, and the crime syndicate tortured him for three days and nights. When the people from the Special Investigation Bureau arrived, he was barely breathing."
Angle Saffire was promptly taken to the nearby prosthetic hospital, where his life was saved, but he permanently lost his left eye and right hand, "He opted for the cheapest repair package, fitting himself with a mechanical eye and replacing his arm with a metal hand."
What puzzled Song Lan the most in this resume was the Special Investigation Bureau’s comments about him.
The headquarters considered Angle to be a rigid and stubborn man, always at odds with the company and the Foster Family, taking on cases that involved corporate interests which others were reluctant to touch—some even thought the company might have wished the crime syndicate would eliminate this troublemaker.
This was precisely why Angle always worked alone, without any partners by his side.
No other agents wanted to wade into the murky waters of corporate affairs, in case they met the same fate as Angle on their way home from work someday.
"Moreover, a few days ago, he accepted a case involving Starfish Technology and started an investigation into the death of the new supervisor. The photo we received in the restaurant was likely sent by him."
In the Starfish Technology case, Song Lan could see that the Special Investigation Bureau was actually a rather slick operation.
Although the details of the case remained unresolved to this day, after the Ragus Foundation intervened, headquarters saw through the scenario and closed the case symbolically, letting the Conservative Faction and Innovator Faction fight out the results among themselves.
"After hearing about this, Angle, true to form, took on the role of stirrer. Even though he knew the headquarters wanted to close the case quickly, he took it upon himself to investigate."
After reading through Angle’s complete resume, Song Lan was dizzy with the content—if not for the fact that these were documents Dr. Bai Zhu had accessed by hacking into the Special Investigation Bureau’s internal network, he would have doubted the veracity of the information.
Dorago Safron’s brother, turned out to be a fighter who, in pursuit of the truth, was willing to take a stand against the company and the Foster Family at any moment?
Especially someone who, for the sake of investigating corporate-related cases, was willing to go undercover and then nearly met his death at the hands of a crime syndicate after being betrayed—this undoubtedly added a touch of tragic heroism to him.
"If you cover the name and don’t look, I’d think he’s the same kind of person as you."
The kind who wouldn’t compromise, in pursuit of justice or truth in their heart, daring to stand opposite the company and the family...
"A stirrer."
Lu Xiang’s words came out surprisingly and interrupted Song Lan’s thoughts. She cocked her head to the side and narrowed her eyes dangerously, "Hold on, you think I’m the same as him, both playing the role of a stirrer?"
She attempted to summarize what Song Lan had just said.
"That, well... what I mean is, from the perspective of the investigation bureau... uh..."
Song Lan sensed danger looming; he realized his use of metaphor wasn’t on point.
"Sometimes the words that slip out in a moment of candour better reflect what’s in your heart."
When he looked up, he saw Lu Xiang looking at him coldly, "It seems what you really need is a lesson in thought education."
