Chapter 425: Chapter 425: Professionals meet professionals_1
They... have they encountered a peer?
To confirm this, Bai Zhu woke up Medea and counted the Bug Swarm overnight. Besides Su Li and Ivan, who were originally in the core city, there were no other dispatched personnel, and neither Su Li nor Ivan was in District Four at the moment.
The bloody handprints and writing on the wall were not their doing.
Bai Zhu returned to her computer desk. Starfish Technology’s security had already launched a comprehensive search because, aside from the sudden appearance of bloody imprints on the wall, two panicked observers also mentioned that their colleague had disappeared.
According to the descriptions by the two of them, the three had gone to the restroom together. After coming out, they smoked an electronic cigarette at the door and waited for nearly fifteen minutes. Feeling that something was not quite right, they went back to check and discovered their colleague was nowhere to be seen, and such a bizarre sight had appeared on the restroom wall.
The security personnel first checked the restrooms one by one, not excluding the adjacent ones, but the final conclusion was that their colleague really had vanished into thin air.
They immediately returned to the monitoring room to review the footage. In the video, they saw the two men who had smoked at the door wander around for fifteen minutes, and when they went in, a scene that chilled everyone to the bone emerged—a disheveled woman in white clothes brushed past them and quickly disappeared.
Several people brought this news back to the office. Everyone believed that the ghost they saw on the screen yesterday had come for them. The first impulse was to go home; this job couldn’t go on.
But then they realized that being alone in this situation was undoubtedly a death wish.
The missing person’s colleague had encountered the attack after being alone, and now it was very likely that they had been killed. And most of them were living alone because of work, going home alone now, they did not know what kind of terrifying things could happen.
Everyone anxiously stayed in the observation room to discuss strategies, but the atmosphere of terror did not stop there. About two hours later, they heard noises coming from upstairs.
But the employees upstairs should have gone home after work. Some of them had confirmed this when they went upstairs with the security staff just now.
"Perhaps it’s the security personnel."
Seeing the observation room suddenly fall silent, someone said to comfort the others.
The comfort didn’t last long; a few minutes later, someone in the room cursed and said the observation room’s ventilation duct was broken and leaking, the water dripping onto his head.
However, when he wiped his half-bald head, his hand was stained red with a thick red liquid.
The security personnel arrived quickly.
When they brought over tools and opened the panel above that employee’s head, they found a contorted corpse that had been squeezed into a grotesque shape. Even his colleagues, who had been with him day in and day out, took a while to recognize his identity, even after seeing the clothes on the body.
All of this, of course, was seen by Dr. Bai Zhu.
This building really is haunted.
When she saw that disfigured face on the screen, she too immediately had that feeling. She, as an observer who knew the reason, felt this way, so what about the people in District Four?
After the first death occurred, the nature of the haunting completely changed.
Unlike the director who was killed by a Cyber maniac’s attack, this colleague had disappeared due to some supernatural force and was dragged through the ventilation duct to his fate. The thought that the ghost who had committed this act had just been peering at them through the panel made everyone in the room turn pale and stand frozen like wooden statues.
Quite ironically, just last night, everyone in this office was still joking and laughing about Emily and others’ experiences, treating it as a "battle royale."
Now Emily and others had settled down in the small town, while they had been targeted by a fierce ghost that leaped out of the computer screen, making them participants in their own "battle royale." And now, the first one eliminated from this "battle royale" had appeared.
Bai Zhu continued thinking along the lines of the other party being a peer. Compared to the services of the Void Playground, the other party’s methods were too simple and crude, lacking subtlety and build-up, just like those old horror films that often used jump scares to frighten the audience.
In the words of Song Lan, who sought after experiential and participatory experiences, this method would hardly provide guests with a feeling of being welcomed.
The current problem was, who exactly had infiltrated Starfish Technology...
"Wow—!"
The next moment, a sharp claw landed on her shoulder, and a loud shout came from behind her ear. This sudden scare made Bai Zhu, who was caught off guard, bounce right out of her chair and instinctively let out a yell as well.
"Are you trying to kill me?"
After recognizing who it was, Bai Zhu’s face turned red as she scolded, "Medea, how old are you?"
She hadn’t heard a knock or the door being pushed; the other party had most likely burrowed up from underground with the express purpose of scaring her.
"Hehe, sorry, sorry."
While apologizing, Medea saved the video of Bai Zhu being startled and jumping out of her chair. Seeing this, Bai Zhu’s face showed a menacing look, "Delete it, or else..."
"Hmm?"
"Or else, do you believe I’ll hack into your operating system and download 3000 GB of garbage files into it?"
"No!"
This time it was Medea’s turn to panic because Bai Zhu could genuinely hack into her operating system, and she could do it by merely moving her fingers over the computer keyboard, "I’ve come to tell you some good news."
"You’d better really have good news."
"Just now I contacted Song Lan and told him about the Starfish Technology affair."
"What did he say?"
"Although he was very unhappy about being woken up by a phone call at nearly one in the morning, he said the people who infiltrated Starfish Technology were most likely from the Ragus Foundation. Earlier today, Qi He got in touch with him through one of their investigators, saying that the Ragus Foundation is currently trying to sabotage the project Starfish Technology is undertaking."
Once again, it was proven that you could always trust Song Lan.
Whenever the Bug Swarm encountered difficulties, you could consult his opinion. Even though he was not at the dumpsite and seemed to have no connection whatsoever with the events occurring in District Four, he still managed to resolve their doubts.
Song Lan, such an enigmatic person.
Bai Zhu immediately opened her search engine and entered the name Qi He.
The search engine returned results quickly—Qi He, the current acting agent of the Ragus Foundation, had represented the foundation in many charitable and other social activities.
"The body in the ventilation duct is most likely the Ragus Foundation’s doing. I suspect they used some sort of robot with optical camouflage capabilities."
Technically speaking, it would not be difficult to kill a clerical staff member of a company with a military robot and then drag his body into a ventilation duct.
But military technology was not as practical as the Devourer, nor did they have a professional team. The half-real experience they brought to the staff of Starfish Technology could only spread fear through such direct and brute methods.
As for the white figure that appeared in the surveillance footage, it was some sort of virus transmitted into the system. All these actions aimed at one goal—to disrupt the normal operations of this new department so that once Starfish Technology disbanded it, the Ragus Foundation could apply for the project.
"Why would they do that?"
"Don’t know."
Medea shrugged, "Qi He said that once they get the project, they’ll come to visit us in person."
