Chapter 424: Chapter 424: Accidental Incident_1
Just as Medea and her colleagues were racking their brains on how to punch someone through the internet, shocking news appeared before their eyes.
The newly appointed director of Starfish Technology’s new department was attacked and died.
As soon as the news was released, it caused a sensation on the internet, leaving the core area’s populace in a state of panic.
Just a few days earlier, Starfish Technology had held a press conference, claiming that the company had established a Void Investigation Department and set up a long-term investigation project. They were confident that within the next year, they could gradually unveil the secrets hidden within the Void. They called on the public to maintain confidence in the United Government and not to fear these unknown adversaries.
The United Government would, as always, achieve final victory in the campaign.
However, just a few days after the press conference, the spokesperson for Starfish Technology, who was also the director of the new department, was attacked and died on his way home.
"Cyber crazies?"
Dr. Bai Zhu hacked into the law enforcers’ database in District Four and accessed the yet-to-be-publicized case report.
According to the report, the news director’s death was in no way bizarre and seemed unrelated to the phenomena observed in the Void the previous night. It was purely bad luck; on his way driving home, he encountered a Cyber maniac who had suddenly gone mad and was blown to bits by a shell launcher, along with his car.
The Cyber maniac was killed on the spot by the rapid-response combat team from the Abnormal Case Investigation Bureau. Further investigation revealed that the Cyber maniac had once worked in the United Government’s overseas department and had been awarded the Three Starrescuer Medal. However, after returning home from the overseas department due to mental issues caused by excessive prosthetic implantation, he was unemployed and homeless.
His Prosthetic Doctor said the patient’s mental state had been unstable. He seemed to suffer from severe modification paranoia. If rejected by a proper prosthetic hospital, he would turn to private clinics, continuously replacing his prosthetics until he finally went mad after the last surgery and launched an indiscriminate attack in a fit of rage.
"This is too strange."
Bai Zhu frowned and said, "It looks like a seamless coincidence."
If one were to follow this clue, they could see the entire process of how the assailant went from being a government-appointed personnel to a paranoid maniac. The crime scene was not far from an illegal clinic, which logically suggests that he could have had an episode right in the operation theatre.
Therefore, anyone investigating this case would come to the conclusion of an accidental death.
The local law enforcers might have also realized the director’s death was too coincidental and thus reported the case to Abnormal Case Investigation, but they found no substantive evidence in the follow-up investigation either.
Yet, Starfish Technology had pointed out many doubts.
For instance, the accident occurred during company hours. Given the director’s usual routines, he always worked overtime until late at night before leaving. But today, he hastily drove home before work ended.
When she asked Falena, who also holds a significant position at the company, she was convinced it was murder.
Someone wanted to eliminate the new director and thus somehow got him to leave the company, only to fatally encounter a Cyber maniac’s shell launcher.
Statistics show that in 93% of competitive murders, companies prefer to blow up vehicles because the victims often carry clues that point to them.
There’s no more efficient method of destroying a body and erasing evidence than this, not to mention the clues, even the victims themselves are burned to ashes.
Falena spoke from experience when she admitted that she had personally orchestrated several actions of eliminating someone through staged car accidents.
The news of the director’s death quickly spread to the observation room, and everyone’s fear soared to new heights. Because of company secrets, they did not make public the terrifying discovery from the previous night, but they all knew it was after the director checked his work that morning and reported issues to his superiors that he met with disaster.
Could it be the work of ghosts?
Though as company employees they shouldn’t believe these baseless urban legends, there were people who had seen a woman in white in the company last night.
Some thought she had run out from their screens to find them.
But with the project at a critical starting phase, even if the new director had died, the company would not stop the project. They were facing another night of overtime work.
This job was nothing like what they had imagined.
In their imaginations, they were supposed to be observers, watching the "Little Mice" struggle for survival in the small town, but now Elymi and the others seemed to have completely integrated into the life of the town. That afternoon, they followed Big Radish Head and others to explore the town and found supplies in the houses that could help them survive.
Under pressure, even the hand sanitizer which far surpassed all hemostatic sprays and could heal most wounds in less than ten seconds, failed to spark discussion among the observers.
For a moment, they could hardly tell who were the real "Little Mice".
Although most of them felt like quitting, nobody dared leave their posts before the company issued an order.
Indeed, since the Review Meeting assigned them this project, there had been rumors that the company passed a list through various departments, adding those employees who were underperforming and unable to generate value for the company to the list. There were also whispers that the higher-ups planned to use this as a way to get rid of a batch of unqualified employees.
For the sake of corporate efficiency, the effect of the rumors was immediate.
After the first group of "Little Mice" was sent to explore the town, every employee’s work efficiency had significantly increased, and the staff even organized a volunteer overtime event called "Light Up the Company’s Future". Working until midnight had become a common occurrence in the past few days.
The observers knew that if they left their critical positions, they themselves would be the next investigators to be sent to the town.
In the silence, another distressing night descended.
But soon, they were pleasantly surprised to find that the town’s hotel was back to normal.
After completing their search, everyone returned to their rooms; once night fell, they first counted the number of people and the supplies. But this time, the structure of the hotel hadn’t changed, and even the electrical interference had disappeared.
This discovery lifted their spirits somewhat—perhaps yesterday’s odd events were just a computer virus.
This peaceful scene lasted until eleven o’clock.
Two observers who ran back to the observation room, tumbling and scrambling, once again spread a terrifying atmosphere throughout the room.
They remembered that fifteen minutes earlier, the three of them had gone to the bathroom together, but now only two had returned.
"Something’s, something’s happened!"
After returning, they immediately contacted the company’s security department; led by armed security personnel, they timidly made their way to the company’s restroom.
Blood handprints on the walls were particularly conspicuous, and there were many blood footprints on the ceiling that were somehow stamped there.
And in the most conspicuous place in the restroom, a few lines were written in blood:
"Run!"
"Everyone’s dead"
These were the words they had seen the day before on the electronic screen on the second floor.
But these two lines had been crossed out with some sharp object and blood, and below them appeared a new line of blood writing:
"None of you will escape"
At the same time, Bai Zhu, who had witnessed all this through the screen in the office, also got goose bumps all over her body.
She didn’t write these bloody words; a computer virus couldn’t do this.
They also didn’t let anyone infiltrate Starfish Technology to write these words.
