Chapter 407: Chapter 407: Walking into the Unscientific_1

Facing this bizarre situation, several people stood at the doorway without a word. After waiting for a while, the sound of snoring came from the room. Only then were they certain that the village chief of Sheep Village had fallen into a deep sleep after returning to his room.

It was hard to imagine someone could sleep so soundly with injuries all over their body and blood still flowing.

Didn’t it hurt?

Out of concern for his companion, Big Radish Head was the first to move closer. He pushed the soundly sleeping village chief with some force, but the latter just turned over without any signs of waking up.

"This must be somnambulism,"

Spicy Chicken thought for a long time before turning to Song Lan for confirmation.

Years ago, when they ran trade missions in the twelfth Neutral Country, they would often stay overnight at the inns they passed en route. Out of boredom, the merchants liked to join the mercenaries and listen to their tales from their years traveling the trade routes.

He had heard many bizarre urban legends from other mercenaries, many of which were about somnambulism.

But he had later looked up many references, and medically, somnambulism could be explained by science. However, this was indeed his first time seeing a sleepwalker in real life.

"Did he sleepwalk last night, too?"

Song Lan asked. Since they needed to inspect the farm early in the morning, he had gone to bed early the previous night and didn’t know whether the village chief of Sheep Village had come downstairs after they were asleep.

"I don’t know. The three of us weren’t together yesterday, but he was in his room when we went to find him this morning."

Just then, Big Radish Head came over, looking troubled. "I can’t wake him up."

He had tried many ways—shoving, shaking, even yanking the village chief upright—but there were no signs of him waking, which was to be expected; his actions were nothing compared to the monsters that had stabbed at him. Thinking of this, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of after-fear.

Lucky for him, he was fortunate enough to have survived an encounter with such a creature.

"Let’s treat his wounds first, and check on him again tomorrow morning."

Under Song Lan’s reminder, the two helped the village chief of Sheep Village to take off his tattered shirt and applied hand sanitizer to his wounds.

The horrifying wounds began to heal at a rate visible to the naked eye, leaving only a red mark within a minute.

Big Radish Head and Spicy Chicken were stunned. Although they had seen the introduction of the hand sanitizer on the website, which claimed to heal almost all external injuries and have considerable resistance to pollution and infection, the speed of healing was a bit too fast—it far surpassed all hemostatic sprays on the market.

If this stuff got out, wouldn’t it be much more useful than hug bugs?

At least every mercenary should stock up on a whole box of hand sanitizer.

All Song Lan could say in response was that the Devourers had their own impressive methods. This hand sanitizer was the result of Medea’s research which had diluted the effects countless times. In contrast, the true members of the Shadow Guards could regenerate a severed head in one second.

To market it to the general public, it had to be diluted, as a higher concentration could cause hallucinations or even allow one to hear echoes from the Bug Swarm network.

Therefore, the instructions on the back of the hand sanitizer explicitly stated not to ingest it.

After learning from Song Lan for some time, the Devourers had also heightened their perspectives, acutely realizing the value of quality over quantity in soldiers. Hence, they had established requirements for infection candidates:

Human combat members must be no less than three-star rescuers, and scientific researchers must possess a master’s degree or higher.

If one didn’t meet this criterion, except for pulling strings to get in through the back door, even if you clung to the Devourers’ coattails, they wouldn’t bother infecting you. They were utilizing the Bug Swarm network to discuss evolution, technology, and other academic issues; what would be the point of someone who didn’t understand anything joining in?

Seeing that the village chief of Sheep Village’s condition had stabilized, Song Lan left the inn and headed straight for the outskirts of town.

This unexpected change had unsettled him, too; outside the door stretched an inky black night where you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face, the whole town enveloped in darkness—there was nothing more reminiscent of a scene from a horror movie.

He wasn’t afraid of anything he could see, it was this unknown, these strange events without any apparent reason, that scared him.

To alleviate the tension in his heart, he urgently needed an episode of "Walk Close to Science" to answer his questions.

Before long, he found several other people involved in the strange incident on a highway at the outskirts of town, where the scene had yet to be cleared up. Looking down, he could see the bloodstains on the cement ground, dragged out long, indicating that after the victim had fallen, they had been dragged for a distance.

The "Hunters" involved were also emotionally agitated, each filled with righteous indignation.

They admitted that the injuries on the Sheep Village’s chief body were indeed inflicted by them, but they had no other choice.

According to their superiors’ instructions about a "newbie protection period," for the first few days they were to mainly intimidate—like when someone tried to escape along the highway, they would suddenly burst out from underground, brandishing their sharp sickles in front of them, frightening them into fleeing back to town, pissing their pants.

The "Hunters" followed these orders, but what infuriated them was the Sheep Village chief’s utter lack of respect for them.

He completely ignored the monsters trying to intimidate him and resumed pushing through to the outside of the town, unaffected by their pincers.

This made the diligent "Hunters" feel disrespected.

But at first, they still decided to try reasoning with him, pushing back the Sheep Village chief to town time and again. Yet, he seemed never to know when to give up, breaking out again and again.

In the end, the enraged "Hunters" decided to let this foolhardy man see some blood, making several cuts on his body. However, this didn’t stop the Sheep Village chief’s determination to leave the town—he kept getting up persistently after each attack and fall, continuing his mechanical escape.

Mostly, his wounds worsened due to him repeatedly falling to the ground.

This behavior continued until 10 p.m., after what seemed like his last attempt, the Sheep Village chief suddenly fell down flat on the ground and did not get up for about a quarter of an hour. Just as the "Hunters" thought they might have accidentally killed one of the town’s residents, the Sheep Village chief startlingly rose from the cold floor, like an undead.

He no longer blindly charged toward the highway, but instead dusted himself off and calmly returned to the town.

After that, the "Hunters" were also clueless about what happened.

"Did he come out yesterday?"

Song Lan asked the question he most wanted to know.

"No."

The "Hunters" communicated quickly through their bug swarm network, and the comrades who surrounded the entire town yesterday hadn’t seen anyone come out.

That means...

The symptoms of sleepwalking appeared after he arrived in town?

Song Lan began to suspect this, but he still could not figure out the reason why. After seeking confirmation from every direction in the dump site, everyone expressed that they simply had no time to fool around with an ordinary person.

And until now, there was another issue that baffled him—how exactly did the Sheep Village chief leave the hotel right under their noses?

To prevent the three from wandering off at night, their position was directly facing the hotel’s main entrance. If the Sheep Village chief had the ability to slip away under his and Fengling’s watch, he would have long been poached by the likes of Military Intelligence Section Seven.

The mystery was not only unresolved but now carried an added tinge of horror.

What in the world was happening to this man?
