Chapter 404: Chapter 404: Hunger is the Primary Productive Force_1

Medea and the others threw themselves into the construction of the Void Paradise, but their primary concern wasn’t the economic issues of District 17, it was the strategic significance of the Bug Swarm.

Since the establishment of the garbage dump, the growth rate of the Bug Swarm had been slow. The main reason was that in the absence of external enemies, it was difficult for them to test the potency of the rot products or Ge Fu’s Infected series equipment through actual combat. However, the construction of the town provided them with an excellent opportunity to test the strength of individual soldier types.

This was also why Medea had eagerly deployed a circle of Knife and Axe Hands around the outskirts of the town, referring to these creatures as "The Hunter". As soon as they hatched, she couldn’t wait to send them into the "battlefield".

As a researcher, Medea didn’t understand the pleasures of farming or cultivation. All she knew was that everyone in the town was an important subject of her research—a loss of one was a loss too many. They could neither let these people have accidents nor allow them to escape.

"Once you’re here, don’t think about leaving," became the guiding principle for all the staff of the Void Paradise after the second meeting.

Nevertheless, they weren’t demons after all.

The mysterious merchant Ge Fu could irregularly sell the Infected series weapons to them, not only as a stable channel for testing new weapons but also for self-defense for the residents.

A good operator must consider the physical safety of the customers, as well as their psychological well-being. In fact, when facing the Void, it is often the collapse of reason that is more severe.

But this posed a dilemma.

Powerful firepower could bring them a sense of security, but on the other hand, if someone were to suddenly have an emotional breakdown and start shooting into a crowd, such unpredictable behavior could instantly cause a large number of casualties.

"Someone must stay in the town long-term to observe their mental state."

After discussing "The Hunter" with Song Lan, Medea left the thorny issue to him, "I heard you are the head of the psychology department. This is your area of expertise."

Having said that, she left nonchalantly, leaving Song Lan dazed in confusion.

Mental health issues were definitely a hot potato.

The colleagues from the Law Enforcers department were just haunting crime scenes. The crimes and tragic events led by humans caused them varying degrees of psychological distress, which could at least be explained by logic. However, for those living in the town, facing unknown monsters and risks every day was an immense challenge to their mental state.

Even after staying a whole day in the town, Song Lan felt somewhat off.

Low visibility due to the fog was one thing, but what troubled him the most was his search through the entire hotel as soon as he arrived, ending in the kitchen which had been abandoned for years.

For someone accustomed to gourmet culture and who refused nutrient injections, a day without food was unbearable.

In some ways, the town still retained an appearance of the post-war era. Go back about twenty years, and District 17 still had synthetic food.

Now the biggest problem had arisen.

His current persona was that of an experienced "Adventurer", not a pampered clerical worker from the administration department. It would have been fine if he fired up the stove for a day or two in the hotel, but if everyday luxury items like food ingredients were to be delivered to the town, it would inevitably raise suspicion amongst everyone.

On a larger scale, it could potentially disrupt the experience of the other residents.

"Fengling, I think it’s time for us to consider this serious matter!"

After returning to the hotel, Song Lan decided to engage Fengling to face this serious issue, "What are we going to eat from now on?"

Fengling held a bag of chips in her hands, munching away with relish.

As soon as Song Lan broached the subject, she casually passed the opened bag of chips to him.

These were all brought from District 2, and there was plenty left.

"That’s what you call ’sitting until the mountain is hollow.’"

Song Lan glanced at the pile of snacks in the room, his heart filled with a sense of crisis.

Adding to his sense of urgency, the Guardian Spirit’s half-body had also emerged from the sword, with its huge claws reaching into the snack bags, savoring the treats with relish.

The room was brightly lit, with two people and a Guardian Spirit gathered around the table, creating a rather harmonious atmosphere.

"Sitting until the mountain is hollow?"

"If we continue to eat without restraint, these snacks will last for no more than three days at most."

Upon hearing this, Fengling and the Guardian Spirit both stiffened in a manner that was perfectly synchronized, and the chips in their hands suddenly lost their appeal.

At home, she was waited on hand and foot and fed with silver spoons, able to dine in upscale restaurants in District 2 whenever she wanted, so the concept of "shortage" was never fully understood by her.

Now, realizing the severity of the problem, Fengling asked, "...What should we do?"

The Guardian Spirit also looked at Song Lan with its bright red eyes.

She had come to see Song Lan as one of the most trustworthy people, and the same was true among the junkyard folks—when faced with an unsolvable problem, they would turn to Song Lan, who always had a solution.

As a result, among the baffled Bug Swarms, Song Lan had earned the nickname "Timely Rain."

Before coming here, both of them had also attended a high-level meeting in the Void Paradise, where it was specifically mentioned that to maintain the mystique of the Void Paradise, interactions with District 17 must be minimized as much as possible. This was not only for the town’s residents; they, as managers, had to set an example, and not indulge in luxury while others lived in hardship.

"We need to figure out a way to be self-sufficient!"

Song Lan stated their purpose of the visit, while crunching on the chips noisily.

He wasn’t the type to ration snacks into small portions for days on end when faced with potential food shortages; he firmly believed that one’s potential was fully unleashed only after consuming all the snacks.

"We need to establish a farm that can carry out automated production, whether through robots or mutated creatures. It’s located not far outside the town, and could regularly bring produce here to sell. I think we could assign a group of artificial intelligences to manage the farm’s production line. Any surplus produce could even be sold at high prices to the town’s residents."

Once again, the potential of humanity proved to be limitless.

Not only did this solve the issue of food supply, but it also enabled them to naturally make money off the town’s residents. They could shear the wool off the Void’s Big Fat Sheep, selling goods to the company at high prices, and the Void could shear them back with supplies and weapons. Undoubtedly, this was a win-win-win positive cycle.

The residents not only made money but also saw improvements in their material standards.

They not only made money but also solved the issues with biological and weapon sample testing.

The company not only indirectly invested in the town’s development but also gained accolades like "Big Fat Sheep" and "Easy Mark."

Thinking this through, Song Lan suddenly felt the world was filled with love and warmth, and the future of District 17 was bright.

"We’ll go explore the nearby area first thing tomorrow morning to see if there’s a suitable place to build an agricultural base."

"And it should come with a fish pond."

Fengling put forth her request, "I like to eat fish."
