Chapter 37: Second Level Alert Order_1

Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Second Level Alert Order_1

Deep into the night, Lu Xiang was awoken by the phone on her bedside table.

After hearing a brief report from the head of field investigations, she quickly got dressed, armed herself, descended the stairs and got on the hovercar.

By the time she arrived at the scene, the Law Enforcers had already cordoned off the involved Polar Star Bar. They would hardly be able to recognize the place based on the existing wreckage if it were not for the cut-in-half signage.

The confirmed death toll had surpassed 100, with not a single survivor left on the scene.

Even the experienced field investigators turned pale at the sight. The bodies they dug out from beneath the rubble were nothing short of bizarre.

It was impossible to make out the human form on the bar patrons. It was as if they were crushed by some massive force before they died, causing their bodies to become flattened.

The same was true for the bar’s wreckage. Such extensive damage did not seem to be due to an internal explosion. From the outside, it looked as if an invisible giant hand had gripped the bar and twisted it ferociously.

Despite the Law Enforcers’ inability to find any eyewitnesses, the identity of the murderer was extremely clear.

Phine Arnhem.

A fugitive wanted by the United Government with a bounty of 1.73 million watts.

The reason they were able to identify the criminal so quickly after the bar’s destruction was because she had posted her own bounty on the front door.

All that was left of the once grandly decorated entrance were a few broken pillars.

After looking at the pair of crimson eyes on the wanted poster and reflecting for a moment, Lu Xiang tightened her grip and her expression grew extremely serious. She then ordered, "Compile the crime data, notify the United Government, and then issue a level two alert."

............

At 6:10 a.m. the following morning,

"All residents of District 17, please take note. Here’s a level two alert notification. For your safety, please stay at home and await further instructions."

Song Lan had woken up an hour earlier than usual due to the incessant repetition of the alert.

He quickly realized what the continuously broadcasting alert meant.

"A level two alert... this is the first time," he muttered.

As a Law Enforcer of District 17, he only theoretically knew that when a level two alert was issued, but in his memory, this was the first time District 17 had activated its emergency preparedness status.

When a level two alert is initiated, all city rail transport lines are completely blocked off, all public enterprises are suspended, and everyone needs to stay at home until furthernotice. This action is an emergency measure activated only when the entire city is threatened, to prevent a large number of casualties.

This meant that something major must have transpired while he was asleep.

Normally, Song Lan would strictly obey the order and stay home peacefully until it was lifted. However, as the ace assassin designated by the Foster Family, he smelled opportunity from the level two alert.

This crisis, which could temporarily paralyze the entire city, was by no means comparable to scuffles with the Mohicans.

With this thought in mind, he quickly opened the refrigerator, checked his reserves, and gathered a bag of snacks.

After washing up, he rode his beloved MK-Ⅱ straight to the Law Enforcement Manor.

The situation at the manor was exactly as he had expected. The sudden crisis had everyone on edge. All department heads had gathered at the command centre, including the usually inconsequential logistics department. The continuously broadcasting citywide alert left his colleagues no leisure to study the rescuer that day. They anxiously sat at their desks, restless.

Song Lan greeted his colleagues and then, clutching the prepared gift bag, headed straight for the statistical department.

Being the busiest administrative department in the Manor, the workload of the statistical department had doubled that day. All regular work was pushed aside; now, the entire department was looking for every possible way to gather information about Phine Arnhem.

Today, Zhuang Chi was nearly driven mad by the workload. She received a call from her colleague in the middle of the night. Before dawn, she hurried to her office, where she had been sitting in front of the computer for more than three hours without rest.

Never had there been this much uproar when dealing with the Chai Ke Group in the past.

Staring at the dense data on the screen, she rubbed her tired eyes.

She finally made progress after half a night’s work. She drank some water, straightened her arms, and stretched. It looked as though she was trying to drive all the accumulated fatigue out of her body with that little gesture.

Then she turned her head and saw Song Lan waiting at the entrance of the office.

No no, she was too busy today. Whatever it was, it would have to wait until tomorrow...

Lowering her gaze, she saw the exquisite gift bag Song Lan was clutching.

Well, combining work and leisure was also important.

A tuft of hair on Zhuang Chi’s head, her "radar," stood up again.

Enjoying good food and keeping herself happy would also increase work efficiency exponentially.

In less than a second, Zhuang Chi had convinced herself, and then walked out the office quietly, ensuring her departure did not make any waves.

As she proved last time, her approach was effective. No one noticed that she had received a gift from Song Lan. That day, she had fought the urge to open the bag and eat right away, holding on until she got off work.

It worked well -- the bag of stewed beef was only finished last night.

Having had the experience, Song Lan was no longer surprised. He followed Zhuang Chi to the office next door, and even locked the door behind him.

"Here."

He handed over the gift bag. As per usual, he let Zhuang Chi check the goods first.

Zhuang Chi didn’t stand on ceremony. She opened the gift bag, took out a delicate mini cake, and sniffed it.

"Not bad."

She happily put the cake into her mouth.

After three rounds of gift-giving, Song Lan found that Zhuang Chi was quite understanding -- whenever she was in a good mood, the tuft of hair on her head that seemed to have a life of its own would shake gently.

"As always, quality goods. So, what’s up?"

"Let’s not beat around the bush. What’s up with the level two alert?"

"Because we have an unexpected guest in District 17."

She more or less guessed why Song Lan would bring her a gift at this time and said, "Phine Arnhem, a federal government wanted criminal with a bounty of 1.73 million watts."

"1.73 million watts?"

Song Lan was shocked by the figure.

The bounty was equivalent to 2.79032 Chai Kes!

It was much more than what he had estimated. No wonder she was a formidable figure who could cause the entire District 17 to be sealed off for her. At the same time, he couldn’t help wondering about Chai Ke again.

What’s going on, aren’t you supposed to be the underground king of District 17?

Now a random intruder from the "outer world" has come, and her bounty is much higher than yours?

How come the speed of devaluation of this combat power measurement unit is faster than that of pay-to-win mobile games?

"Furthermore, that was her bounty three years ago."

Zhuang Chi added, "She disappeared after going to the ’outer world’ three years ago, and there hadn’t been any news of her since. It could have risen."
