Chapter 343: Chapter 343: The Path to Freedom_1
That morning, "Rat" encountered big trouble again.
After the incident at the Gold Diggers’ Bar, he immediately fled, although he didn’t understand why Ophir and Ivan laid in puddles of blood, but he figured out one thing.
There was a reason Lu Xiang let him leave the town, they absolutely used him as bait, to fish for the person who had attacked Ophir and Ivan from the shadows. During his days of drifting in the "outside world," "Rat" had grown up a lot; he was no longer the naive youth he once was.
Escaping from District Seventeen, a place of right and wrong, while Lu Xiang was investigating the attacker, was his plan.
However, this meticulous plan was completely ruined when he passed by a public park.
"Help—! There’s a pervert!"
This was the predicament "Rat" was forced to face at the moment.
Just now, his body suddenly moved out of control, lunging at a woman in the park in a hungry and lecherous manner.
He admitted he wasn’t a gentleman, but who would have the mind to tackle a strange woman to the grass in broad daylight while on the run?
In District Seventeen, where law enforcement was getting increasingly strict, wasn’t this like jumping into the net voluntarily?
"Miss, don’t shout, listen to my explanation, I’m not a suspicious person!"
Despite scaring everyone in the park with his actions, "Rat," wrapped up like a rice dumpling to avoid the Law Enforcers, still had to pant heavily, attempting to clear his name.
"Get your filthy hands off my waist!"
The woman struggled even more fiercely. She clearly didn’t believe "Rat’s" words.
"I really didn’t mean to do it!"
"Rat" was so anxious he started to sweat, because he found the harder he tried to push the woman away, the stronger he clung to her. He wasn’t that strong himself; it was some invisible force controlling him, forcing him to behave like a rogue in front of the public.
He admitted that this excuse was hard to gain anyone’s trust, but it was the truth!
Seeing negotiation was fruitless, he could only change tactics, enticingly saying, "Miss, stop shouting, I have money, I can give you a lot of money!"
"Pah, I’m not that kind of person!"
Enticement was of little effect, and the woman struggled even harder, because she noticed the change in "Rat’s" eyes—he was clearly afraid of the Law Enforcers from District Seventeen who might appear at any moment!
"Shh, keep it down, someone’s coming!"
"Good, someone’s coming. Help, there’s a molester here!"
...
The footsteps from behind were getting closer and closer, "Rat" gritted his teeth, rolled on the grass with the woman twice, and then turned around, warily staring at the unwelcome guest slowly approaching them.
The newcomer was clearly not one of the Law Enforcers, which was apparent from his outfit.
A performance costume that concealed the entire figure, topped with an animal head, the attire made it seem as if he had just finished work at the theater and hadn’t had the chance to change back into his everyday clothes. The bear head he wore looked at "Rat," sending chills down his spine.
He thought of the assailant who attacked Ophir and Ivan, and now encountering him was undoubtedly the worst-case scenario.
The woman he was embracing seemed to be frightened by the bear head too, and her voice faltered.
"Fate is such a wonder, isn’t it?"
Bear Head sat on a chair not far from the two, eyeing them with interest, "Just one exchange of glances is enough to tightly intertwine the fate of two people."
To "Rat," such a statement was tantamount to revealing his identity.
"I advice you not to get too happy, I have a tracking device on me from the Law Enforcers. It won’t be long before they find this place!"
"Rat" took the initiative to bluster.
Before passing through the park, he had bitterly cursed Director Lu’s despicable behavior of using him as bait, but now he only wanted to warn the Law Enforcers of District Seventeen that their bait was about to be taken by the fish, to quickly think of something!
He had only just realized that, compared to the Law Enforcers, he was more afraid of encountering assassins who neither followed the law nor played by any set rules.
Bear Head was not only unscared by "Mouse", but he also brought him some bad news.
"If you are referring to Lu Xiang, she won’t be able to make it for a while. Just like you, she’s probably immersed in some wonderful twist of fate right now."
Damn Psychics!
"Mouse" cursed inwardly. Having been with the Esinvig Army for such a long time, the presence of Psychic Ability Users was nothing new to him.
"I don’t understand what you are talking about, and I’ve never met any of you. I just want to go home!"
The frightened woman interrupted the conversation between the two men, and although she could not understand what exactly was happening, even Director Lu seemed to have been affected.
In the eyes of the residents of District 17, Lu Xiang was a hero.
"It seems neither of you are very satisfied with each other."
Bear Head’s voice sounded somewhat troubled, "Indeed, such things do happen occasionally. Once the initial romance and passion fade, every word and action of the other person can turn into the thorn of destruction for that twist of fate."
"There was never any romance or passion!"
"Mouse" shouted angrily.
This shout finally took effect, and Bear Head, who had been leisurely sitting on the ground, finally stood up. He slowly approached the two lying on the grass; "Mouse" and the woman were holding hands, instinctively trying to get away from Bear Head, but were unable to rise because they were unaccustomed to moving together.
"Since this twist of fate is causing you pain, let me relieve you of it."
"What do you want to do?"
Mouse glared at Bear Head warily.
Although he wanted to immediately sever this inexplicable connection, Bear Head’s actions gave him an ominous premonition.
From his wide sleeves, he took out a sharp dagger.
The cold glint of the blade reflected on both their faces, "Make a choice. As long as one of you dies, the other will be free."
The dagger was tossed at their feet. Capitalizing on his physical advantage, "Mouse" snatched the dagger away before the woman could.
Unsuccessful in her snatch, the woman frantically tried to escape from "Mouse", but some invisible force kept her tightly linked to him.
She knew that the question was not difficult for either her or "Mouse". Today was their first meeting, and they had never left a good impression on each other, so whoever got hold of the dagger would not hesitate to kill the other.
In District 17, killing and death had long been a part of their lives, especially when forced into it.
"Mouse", having snagged the dagger, let out a long breath. He gripped the dagger tightly in his empty hand.
He coldly pulled the woman up from the ground.
Bear Head watched with great interest; to him, it seemed to be a drama unfolding before his eyes.
As an audience member, he egged them on, "Kill her, and you’re free."
The woman seemed to have already foreseen her fate, looking at "Mouse" with a despairing gaze, trying to etch the last moment of her life into her memory.
"Listen, when I was outside, I saw plenty of truly vicious thugs."
"Mouse" raised the dagger, "Dealing with them made me realize one thing— in their eyes, whatever choice we make is but a minor farce."
And in most cases, this farce does not end with the death of one party.
His eyes suddenly became very determined, and in the next moment, it seemed like boundless energy burst forth from his body.
The dagger in his hand changed its course and went straight for Bear Head’s chest.
— "So, the real one dying here, is you, the loser!"
